Marvel Mystery Oil
« on: February 24, 2011, 05:12:33 PM »

This may not go here but there is no lubricants topic available so here goes-------Marvel Mystery Oil-----
Anyone running this stuff as fuel additive in their HD's? I have used it for years in my diesels, and gas motors, lawnmowers, etc. and swear by it. You can really tell the difference immediately in both performance and fuel mileage, but for whatever reason never in my Harley. I went on their website and they say it is great for bikes also and really good for any fuel injection system, but I wanted to see if anyone here had actually tried it.

I use it because today's gasoline is so 'dry'. It's a good idea to lubricate the fuel pump and injectors. I have no fantasy that it's some magic potion for the engine's top end, but the fuel system parts need lubrication too. Ounce or so in every fill-up. I hear a lot of people saying their fuel pumps are starting to get noisey. Mine still sounds new and tight after 48K miles. Maybe it's workin'...

Actually it is a magic potion. It works on quieting top ends as well as freeing up siezed pistons and a whole lot of stuff in between. If you have only two products on your shelf outside of whatever you run for fluids, one should be WD-40 and the other Marvel Mystery Oil.

It is the Old Timer trick for sure. Had an uncle that ran it in everything and would probably drink it if he could get away with it. To his credit he drove a Model T ford truck every day and this was in the 70s - 80s.

I haven't had to quiet a top end or free a siezed piston in a while, but I carry Marvels in the saddlebag and a one ounce plastic cup. It's just a blend of friction modifiers. Honestly, a little 2 stroke oil would probably work just as well for my use, but I'll stick with the MMO. Just habbit, I guess.

Haven't had an issue with it, even with 11:1 compression and 93 octane pump gas, as far as knock or anything. The bike "seems to like it".  ;)

I squirt it all over a new engine build while assembling to take the dry out of that first crank. Recently I bought a used Bushtec with shocks that wouldn't hold air and gave each shock a squirt through the air line and they are air tight again. It smells and looks like ATF, but I think it was around before automatic transmissions, so what is it ??  Doc

:nixweiss: Are you sure about that?  It's recommended for that purpose and I've never had a problem with my air tools by using it although I'll admit mine don't get all that much usage.

I also used it when reseating the injectors on my small block Chevy LT-1,  No problems there either.

Makes exhaust smell good too...I believe it to be a mineral oiled kerosene with red dye in it...

I have used it in my air tools also, didn't know of the other uses. Interesting.

Probably because the company makes a special formulation strictly for air tools and people dont realize this and end up using the wrong Marvel product in their air tools  :nixweiss:

Where does one find this Marvel Mystery Oil?  Can you purchase it at any auto parts or does it need to be ordered?   Thanks!

My Dad always winterized his Chris Crafts with it.   (poured down the carb while running-fogging the engine).
