How many running Full Face helmets....???
« on: March 24, 2011, 08:38:31 PM »

I have the top of the line SHOEI full face, hate it because it is Japanese and looks a bit big, BUT WHAT A SAFE HELMET...

Leaning on 60 now, 40 years with Harley.  I would like a BELL because it is American, but not available here.  In accidents, something like 35% got major jaw/facial damage without a full face.   Leaning on 60, I am partial to keeping my lower jaw, plus the full face is good in the stinging rain and bugs time... I ride with sunnies and the face sheild cocked up full, only to pull it down in the rain or at night with no sunnies...

I like the Nolans, but again no lower face and jaw protection...

Just curious, how many ride with the full face helmet these days????  Maybe I am just getting old...  ???

OK I have ridden with full face for years, I love my Shoei but I also have a few others. By far the two Shoei's I have are the most comfortable and they are top rated. Helmets should not be about where they are made but their safety rating and they fit, Have it painted to match the bike, then it will look cool.

Shoei are good helmets.  I'm just too cheap to buy one.

I now own a Scorion EXO 900.  The one J&M sells with the headset built in.  It's a modular, so it's a little heavy, but I like it on long trips.  It has a flip down sun shield that's not dark enough for me so I went to Walmart and bought some window tint and applied it to the sunshield.  Now I can ride directly into the Texas sun without squinting.

Most of the time I wear a half helmet

I've been wearing a helmet since the early 1970's, and a full face helmet since the early 1980's, Arai initially and Shoei most recently.  As far as I'm concerned, if you're going to wear a helmet, it should be one that provides the maximum protection.  To me, that means full face and Snell.

After doing a face plant into the back of a van in San Francisco six years ago and a shattered jaw......I now wear a full face.  Well, actually it's a flip face.....Italian made.....Nolan N-103.  The wife wears the Nolan Trilogy.....both helmets are N-COM.  Since she rides her own bike, we're able to talk to each other going down the road.  Sure makes it a lot more convienent than hand signals and sign language. :2vrolijk_21:

By the way, I also don't follow so closely anymore.....well, most of the time. :nixweiss:

Just bought a Nolan N-90, haven't tried it yet still waiting for the snow to go. I usually wear a beanie but my hearing is getting too bad, I need more wind protection.

When I first started riding I used a 3/4 helmet with a snap-on shield. Then I rode for several years without a helmet for comfort reasons in the hot SW sun.

Now I use both 3/4 and full face. 3/4 in the summer, Z1R ACE and a full face Shoei in the wintertime.

Looking into the HJC CL-Max. It's a modular/flip-up helmet and may buy one of those soon. Finding a helmet that fits me is a challenge, since I were a 3x. A lot of manufacturers don't even make anything larger than 2x.

The wife and I regularly use a Arai 3/4 with flip shields. Hd Boom audio headsets. Rode 7000 mile last august with them to the west coast and back. Wouldn't leave home without them. Most comfortable helmets I have ever worn.
I also wear Arai Full face on my softail rather than a windshield.

I like the fit, and I must have as they are $700 here in Oz....

I am thinking I will just get rid of the SHOEI on the front...  On paint, a Motorcycle Instructor sort told me they definitely do not recommend you paint them, as it can affect the structure of the helmet.  Ever hear of that?  It would be cool to match up to my 2011.5 BIG BLUE FLHTCUSE6 coming in a few months...

I've always been a fan of full face helmets as most of my riding is at highway speeds. Had one unscheduled dismount on a corner that the full face showed its worth many times over. Been a consumer for Bell Helmets for a long time although my latest is a carbon fiber light weight helmet that the dealer sold me on, at this point I not using a windshield or have a fairing and am enjoying the light weight aspect very much. Also, since this is my first Harley I will probably wear a helmet more frequently until I have more miles in the seat (and get the detachable windshield).

Ever since watching a buddy hit the pavement without a helmet all the guys in our group ride with F/F helmets. I find that flipping open the visor just a bit reduces the wind noise and adds a little fresh air. Besides, what is your head worth is what you put on it.  :2vrolijk_21:

Recently purchased Schubreth C3 and C3W Modular Full Face Helmets for my wife and myself.  Never really rode with anything other than Half helmets and the 1 Harley Full Face helmet.   Totally sold on the Schubreth's.  Top notch and Service from North America Schubreth out of California.

Nothing but Full Face Modular...currently the Nolan N-102.  I wear glasses, so it just makes getting everything on/off that much easier with the flip face, plus when you get stuck in stop and go traffic, or stuck at a red light in the hot summer, you can flip it up with one hand and get some fresh air, if needed.  I have worn 1/2 helmets a few times, but hated them...I actually think they are hotter because you get the full brunt of the hot air hitting you square in the face...it's like a furnace in front of your face.  But, it gets really hot here in Alabama.

But the main reason for a FF is that I'm old and ugly enough without leaving part of my face on the pavement if that ever happens (knocking on wood).  I just got through reading an article written by an intern (MD) who is also a rider, about the different kinds of road rash, which is actually a burn...it is not pleasant reading, but I can assure you that it made me fully realize the importance of wearing as much gear as I can stand, even in hot weather.  The worst kind of road rash, which is like a 1st degree burn, takes YEARS to get over, involving skin grafts, etc, and even then a person may never have feeling on that part of his/her skin.  I damn sure don't want that happening to my face...

I don't wear a helmet most of the time, but when I did I had a full face. I only kept the shield down when it was really cold, or raining hard, felt claustrophobic with it closed up!

I always use full face. I worked in a trauma center. Believe me wear a full face or good modular. I use Schuberth. Very expensive, but my head content is worth it.

Absolutely true, and that is also what any helmet manufacturer I'm aware of will tell you.  The various solvents used in the painting process, and the heat involved in the baking process if they bake it, can have serious unintended consequences for the integrity of the impact absorbing materials.  You might ask, how does the manufacturer paint them and not affect the safety of the helmet?  Very simple; they paint the outer shell first, then install the impact absorbing material and the comfort padding last.

If you really want to have a helmet painted, I'd recommend contacting the manufacturer first to see if they offer the service or if they can recommend someone capable of doing so without compromising the integrity of the helmet.  I know there are plenty of places that will paint helmets, and there are plenty of folks on this site who have had helmets painted.  I don't know of any that have had the helmets tested afterward to make sure they still met all applicable safety standards, however.  If you wear a helmet just to be legal, and don't really care about protection, go for it.

SHOEI Multi-tec all the time, ride year-a-round here. Use dark tint shield with the Fog-City dark band fitted to inside daytime and clear with pin-lock fog insert at nite. Love the helmets.

I have riden in a full face helmet for a few years now. I have a Arai and a Fulmer both work out good. I agree they offer more lower jaw protection but visability can be obscured some. I use them because I require Glasses to see clearly.  Lost my glasses wearing a 1/2 helmet on the hiway so I switched. Missouri is a helmet required state.
I got used to them.Rick

I have not been wearing a full face but this new one from Bell looks like a nice modular helmet for the price.  I tried it on at the shop and felt a little claustrophobic but most likely due to the fact I am normally in a half or 3/4 or not one at all.

I would wear a flip-face helmet (don't like a full face with glasses) if I could only find one that fits with my broad jawline. I have tried a 3XL modular and it still crushed my jaw. Wish they made more helmets to fit a broader face.

Harley Davidson 98211-10VM which my dealer threw in after my $crew#%g on my last bike purchase. I am happy with it, I too have glasses that I like to wear and being a modular, it makes it possible and easily so! I also have done the face plant riding without a full face and had wired jaw and broken/chipped teeth...... It still hurts in weather changes nearly 40 years later... And a few years ago I hit a dog and I did a face plant on asphalt w/ Shoei and without it God only knows what would have happened, it distroyed the helmet but surely saved my face at a minimum.

Hello Guys,

Great response on this... Before I paint my Shoei I wll certainly email them to see if I can and just not bake it.....

On this Harley Helmet show above: Petewerner, I AM very interested but how good is it?
I like this option because of two things: Loyalty to the Heritage of HD, where I do not like the Shoei idea Honda thing... You know... :nixweiss:
Secondly, this helmet would HAVE to be made to wear with the Harley supplied intercom and Bluetooth for my new FLHTCUSE6 BIG BLUE coming to Australia for me in July....
I miss a lot of calls, and this HD helmet would go with Bluetooth for my phone, right?  And intercom or other communications, right?

So, how do I tell how good the F/F is.... Shoei has the strongest toughest reputation from Professionals...   Besides beating up the Shoei and the HD F/F with a sledge, how would you rate the HD helmet in comparison?

Regards from Australia, where my head has enough scars already...  :pumpkin:

ALL HD helmets are made by somebody else, and not all of them are made by the same company.  To my knowledge, none of them are made by Shoei.  I have not thoroughly researched this, but as a general rule, modular full face helmets do not pass SNELL standards because of the modular feature, but there may be some out there that do now.  However, if you wear glasses, the tradeoff is worth it to me.

The HD Boom Headsets, which will come with your bike, will clamp to most helmets with a STRAIGHT lower lip on the bottom side of the helmet.  They will NOT clamp to a helmet design like Nolan, which has a curved bottom.  I can't answer your question about the Bluetooth stuff, as I do not want to talk on the phone while riding.  One thing I do is pair the phone with the GPS so that I can tell when a call comes in, and then decide if it's important enough for me to pull over and talk to someone, which is rarely the case.  But, I'm not a big talker on the phone, and I don't have a business, etc.  If my Sister calls (which is rare), then I'll probably pull over and call because something is up if she calls me.  Everybody else can leave a voice mail.

Thank you,

Right after Christmas a few years ago off of the discount table at my local HD, I bought a full face helmet that I wear when it is real cold. Otherwise I wear a HD carbon fiber half helmet 90% of the time.

Cowboy, I believe what TC says is true.  The HD helmet is a branded product made by another helmet manufacturer, I don't think it's Shoei or Schuberth.  If another F/F helmet got consistently great feedback it would be worth the time to investigate and see who made the HD.  Since I've never heard of another helmet that consistently gets as high marks as the Shoei, I wouldn't even investigate it.  I've worn Arai modulars and Bell modulars before, but now wear a Shoei Multitec modular after hearing others sing their praises.  I have found it to be the best for wind noise, venting, visibility, rain, cold/hot weather, glasses, visors and the latching system still works "good as new" after many flips up and down.

I believe that many lids will protect your noggin, it's how well it performs in a variety of conditions that adds true value over the long haul.

My options just ground to a full halt...

The HD helmet shown is not legal here in Oz (Australia).....  No one has paid for the ADR testing to make it legal tender...

Not seen Bell here either...

Guess I am stuck with my Shoei, but that is OK, it is a very good helmet and fits me like a second skin...

Without the Australian Design Rules approval sticker, in an accident you can get in trouble with your medical insurance...  :nixweiss:
That is the quick end of that one...  And I really liked the look of that HD helmet...  :pumpkin:  Oh well , maybe next year or so it will come in.

On trips we both wear Shoei f/f with scala intercom. Had a dismount around 50 miles per hour on a dirt road( dual ride bike) Arai f/f saved my life, broke a bunch of ribs took the helmet down to the core but lived to ride another day. Hate the full face but wear everyday. Catch hell  from my bro's but I always tell them I do not want to finance my wife's next husband. Ride often-ride straight!

I have an older modular style HD branded helmet that I used for years. It was/is a pretty good helmet. It is definitely a Chinese made helmet; if I recall it is  a re-branded HJC Helmet. Most of the HD helmets I have seen are either a HJC or KBC  helmets. I have since bought a Shoei X11 that I use most days although I admit I often use a half Helmet.

I wear a full face most of the time although in the Florida heat there are times i will use my half helmet.  This past December I was that the PRI show (Performance Racing Industries) in the Orlando Convention center and I spoke with the people from Bell.   they have a new line of helmets coming out up to 4x they said.   Might be worth the inquiry if you wanted a Bell.

Have Shoei Multi-Tec, Shoei 3/4 & Harley.  Wear the Harley 1/2 when it's really hot and the FF or 3/4 the rest of the time.  The 3/4 seams to be the most quiet.  For some reason the FF seams really loud??

I think the FF is louder because the sound in the helmet has no where to go. If I open my face shield it helps to quiet the helmet a little.

Wear an Ikon full face on long trips and various half helmets around town and once I get to my destination. Found a Ikon in the same red as my bike and had my painter do the gold leaf flames and graphics and apply clear coat. Won't effect the structural safety of the helmet.

Been using full face helmets since the 80's all of them have been Shoei helmets.

After an idiot kid in a VW bug cage knocked me down with his drivers side front fender and door (said he didn't see me...), I recieved some road rash and the helmet was a mess, but my head and face were fine. Don't settle for less than "full face coverage".  :soapbox:

I have been wearing full-face since I started riding in '83 - first Bell, then Arai, now Shoei.  I think the Arai Profile fits my head shape best, but the almost $500 for a solid color helmet got me into a Shoei, that fits almost as well - very comfy and cool paint with a spare shield for much less $$.  I got tossed over a guard rail several years ago in a highside that left a nice deep gouge up the side of my helmet from the guard rail I-beam post in the cheek to temple area - a 1/2 or 3/4 helmet wouldn't have helped me much in that situation and in addition to the collarbone injury, I would have been bleeding profusely and not sure I would have been able to ride myself to help.

I tend to wear FF helmets in the winter, when it's threatening to rain and on cross country trips.  My wife does the same when she's on her bike.  We both lean toward the Shoei.

I was on a x-country when I totalled my '05 FLSTC three years ago when a deer wanted to ride on the front of my bike as I was pushing 55mph.  I too had some rash but my leathers and helmet took the brunt of the damage.  I was never so thankful for that FF!  :2vrolijk_21:

JCZ has made quite a few suggestions here over the past few years....mods (more than quite a few), shoes, sun shirts, etc.  After reading his post on this thread 3 weeks ago, Viv and I have now gone to FF helmets.  It took 3 weekends to find one that fit comfortably.....now its just getting use to the difference in vision compared to the old 1/2 helmets.  Hope we never need these things but just in case............."thanks in advance"...........Russ

Just bought the new Shoei Quest after reading reviews on how quiet they are...  LOVE it. Rode for a week in the rain and it seals up very nicely and keeps wind/rain/noise out. Most comfortable FF I've ever used although I've spent most of my life riding 1/2 this one is a keeper.

Just saw this for the first time.  Just sharing my personal experience Russ.  I was always a knucklehead Russ.....I could never learn from somebody else' experience.....always had to learn it the hard way.  Then I always look back and tell myself "man, why didn't I listen to him when he was telling me?" :nixweiss:

Like you, I hope you never really "need" it but you have them if you do.

An added feature.....full face with a dark tint shield your head is actually cooler than with a half shell or beanie.  Of course I didn't believe it when I read it......but when I experienced the first summer when it got into the triple digits.  Not saying it's cool inside when it's 105F out.....but cooler (because the sun is not beating directly on you) than without the full face and UV protected face shield. :2vrolijk_21:

FF is great.. if you arent  stuck in afternoon traffic.... one of the main reasons I use a modular for my commutes into town. Its so humid here it gets freaking HOT in the afternoons... glad I dont have that commute too often now.

Gonna go take a look and see what the local bike shops have... might try the Shoei... the KBC I have now looks exaclt like the HD helmet with the exception of the color scheme.

I run full face. I dont have a windshield on my bike, so its mandatory for me. I hit a cicada at 70mph once, on the knee, and I have zero desire to have one smack me in the face. Add to that, dust, dirt, the jackass in front of me he likes dumping cigarettes/ash out the window.... honestly I dont know how you can ride a windshieldless bike without one.

I have a Harley branded HJC, which has been ok. Its not the safest helmet on the market, and while its comfortable, its loud and the airflow is pretty weak up top. So, in the Texas sun it heats up awful fast.

Just ordered a Nolan N90 this weekend, and should have that in a day or so. Looking forward to the change in lids.

Let us know what you think of the N90, i have looked at them a few times and it seems like a decent helmet.

Very impressed with the N90 so far. Ventilation is a LOT better across the top compared to the HJC I had been running. The HJC had good chin ventilation, but the top was poor. The Nolan gets a lot more airflow, and is far cooler in the hot Texas summer. :)

Fit on the helmet is excellent, and while it snug, its comfortable. I actually put the helmet on and wore it around the house when it showed up, just to looked for pressure points and squeeze. I had no issues whatsoever.

The noise is SUBSTANTIALLY better than the HJC. Despite both having intergrated sun shades, the Nolans system is side mounted with a much small button. Still no issues moving the slider with gloves, but no rattle like I have with the HJC. The Nolan has an airdam that mounts under the chin that cuts down the wind noise from under the chin. Very quiet helmet in comparison to the HJC or even my buddies Shoei.

Tab on the faceshield is centered, so you can operate it with either hand, as opposed to left mount only on my HJC. The Nolan has about the same weight as the HJC, but its smaller in profile, and doenst feel heavy at all.

Most importantly for me, the Nolan has a pretty good rating from SHARP, and most importantly the chin bar stayed locked through 100% of the impact tests. There were only a couple of helmets that met that number, and the Cabergs aren't available in the US.

It would be hard to argue against that a full face helmet offers the maximum protection available.  I wear one sometimes (Harley flip face).  In the rain or cold, they are beyond compare. But we do give up some things when wearing them.  IMHOP vision is somewhat reduced, so is hearing and smell. The trade offs are personal, but if the weather looks good I wear a half helmet (note: I live in Florida, a NO helmet State, {for now}).  If I'm going on a trip, I use a helmet sized cargo net for the full face, if we run into a storm the change is made.

I've ridden with a full face since the 80's .. frequently get flak about it but I just tell it's my choice.   I have a Shoei RF1000 , next year probably an RF1100 . I has 2 Schuberts before , both great

Hey Nidan, I would strongly recommend the shoei qwest. Very quiet and comfy.

I hate to admit to the very safe FF helmet riders that I use a half helmet most of the time. I was brought up on dirt bikes in the seventies and we rode with 3/4 shells and face shield. I do use one of those on the Dyna for wind noise and possible rainy days. I really do not like it as much especially on a hot simmer day. Most Harley dider in this part of the country use the half style with quite a few using the non DOT ultra thin skull caps, barely better than a ball cap. In the neighboring state of KY they use no helmets at all, even in the cold winter months. My head would freeze to death and that is when I enjoy more coverage.

I had 1/2 helmets, along with my Nolan N102's back a few years ago.  Personally...and this doesn't make good common sense...I found them to be hotter in the summer than my FF modular.  There was something about getting that blast of hot air right in my face that was uncomfortable for me, plus I didn't care for the air getting under the helmet and making it feel like it was a parachute attached to my head.  On top of that, the wind noise was awful at speed.  They were OK when just riding around town, but with the Nolan I can flip the front up and get almost the same result...look like a conehead though.   ;D I had them attached to the TP on a trip to Hot Springs a few years ago with one of those cargo net things...the helmets fell off somewhere in Memphis and I never replaced them.

Terry you subtly hit on the other factor and that is cosmetics. For some reason the half helmet represented the Harley image and the FF is for crotch rockets. I do wonder if helmet choice is not influenced by rider age or maturity with most of our members being in the more aged, affluent and educated and that may place safety above cool. ;)

There is some truth to that.  Where I live, most of the people riding Harley type bikes (that includes Jap bike wannabes) wear half helmets, or even the skull cap (tupperware bowls) type, while nearly every crotch rocket rider has a FF on.  For the crotch rocket riders, it's probably not only the "look" that they are after, but also the fact that you're not getting much wind protection on those bikes, as your head is generally hanging out over the gas tank.  Demographics would probably support the assumption that most CVO owners are older, with more disposable income...that being a generalization, of course.  I certainly fit into the "older" catagory.  My reason for a FF helmet is pretty simple:  I get this visual of my face impacting either another vehicle or the pavement, and it's not a pleasant visual.  Not only am I vain enough not to want half my face torn off or disfigured, I don't heal as fast as I used to, so don't want to take any more chances than are necessary in riding a bike when it comes to gear.  Skin grafts or rebuilding my nose and chin is just not something I want to even think about having done.  If I could stand it, I'd wear leather chaps and a leather jacket year 'round, but summer temps just don't allow that where I live.  40-80 degrees are my favorite riding temps, 'cause it allows me to wear all my good gear.  When I was 22 years old and immortal  ;), I didn't think about this kind of stuff, but being 59 now, I'd like to maintain my mobility for as long as possible...and what looks I have left.  I actually cringe every time I see someone riding with shorts, improper foot gear, etc. :nervous:

The wife and I just bought n90's with blue tooth and used them on the Tahoe trip. Very happy with them and were especially nice when riding in the rain. Only issue was as I flipped up mine leaving a gas station the small piece at the bottom of the chin flew off and I later found it melted to my pipe. I actually didn't miss it riding and access to the flip up is easier.

That little piece is something to keep an eye on...it's actually better not to have it on in the warmer months, but it's really nice in colder weather  :2vrolijk_21:

I have the same helmet. That is the chin stop to keep air from coming up from under the chin. It does cut down some noise, but in the summer, its not really that big of a deal to leave it off.

I agree though, it does come off very easily, and its annoying to try and get it back in. Other than that, the helmet is pretty nice. I dont have the bluetooth system on mine yet, too paranoid to put one in yet. :)

Schuberth C3 with bluetooth SRC.  IMO this is one of the best helmets made and the bluetooth feature allows for 2 other intercom units in addition to GPS.  Just finished a 1500 mile ride (West Coast GTG) and myself and bsr very happy with the helmet.  As with any helmet purchase, try it on first.....all makes fit your head a little differently and some just feel better due to the shape of the head and the design of the helmet.

I always wear a full face... Had an HD full face and hated it. At 65 mph + it wanted to pull my head right off. Switched to the Suomy D20 modular and I love it. Even at high speed, it is very aerodynamic and much quieter than the HD helmet.

I use a HD 3/4, but reading this thread motivates me to also get a FF for "out of town" riding.

Can't make my mind up what I think of the design of the BMW 6 flip-up helmet.

Opinions?

yep.  Glad that some are spending the effort to make helmets better in lots of areas, since we have to spend so much time wearing one.  Lighter is so much better  and cooler and smaller.  We'll have to see/feel it to really know.  spyder

Full face helmet is a blessing on those cold winter rides, esp. on the Interstate like a early spring ride to Daytona when it's usually sleeting or cold rain....only thing is you can't hear your tunes as well.  spyder

I hardly ever run my stereo through the bike's speakers any more...Installed J&M headsets in the Nolans.  It ain't Bose, but it's pretty decent.  I rarely have to turn the volume up past 4-5 bars, and can still hear things around me just fine.

The reason I like a FF helmet, besides the fact that it offers better protection for my old noggin', is that the helmet becomes part of the air flow when riding the bike, and in inclement weather, you just can't beat them.  The brief time I had half helmets, I never found them comfortable at speed...cruising around town, they were fine, but on the highway, they sucked.  And they seriously sucked when it rained. Not wearing a helmet is never an option for me...I never forgot the time I fell off a wall playing when I was about 6 years old and busted my head open, and that was about a 6 foot fall.  It makes my butt pucker up to think about my head hitting the pavement, even at 15 mph.

To me, the modular (flip face) helmets are kinda' the best of all worlds because you can flip them up when stopped in hot weather...you look like a goober, but it's functional.

That BMW helmet looks very interesting...I am particularly interested in it's light weight.  Wonder what the price point is?

I have been bouncing back and forth about wearing a FF vs. my half helmet. I have even gone so far as to have the FF sitting on the bike and at the last minute switched to my half. Then several weeks ago a member of my HOG Chapter went down on the freeway suffering head and face injuries and is on a long road to recovery. That was the final decision maker for me. I currently own a HJC AC12 Carbon, it is a very comfortable helmet and is fairly quiet on the road. I have a Chatterbox set up in it, but have been looking at the new FS15 Carbon, it's even lighter than my current helmet and I'll install the new XBI Bluetooth set up in mine and my wife's helmet. Carbon cost a lot more, but the weight difference is well worth it. (And it looks really cool too)

My last three rides to Daytona, Spring rally twice, and biketoberfest have been in the rain for at least 375 of the miles.

I can tell you, wearing my 1/2 I was sure thinking a full face would be much better.

Wife switched to a full face two years ago for her and her bike.  I have been thinking about it.  I just never liked them, even on dirt bikes.

I was of the same opinion until I happened to find a really lightweight one that didn't make any wind noise and had a flip up shield that I could crack a bit as needed.  I still prefer a small open helmet when it's hot, but the full face is nice in cold and/or wet weather.  I've even been known to carry both on longer rides. spyder

Just rode 958 miles in 18 hours from Sturgis to my house and wore a Full face the whole way just for comfort.  I did have a half helmet with but on the interstate at high speed it is simply more comfortable to wear the full IMHOP.

I switched to the Nolan N103 modular in June just before our trip to Yellowstone.  Hot, cold, rain, and it was great.  Comfortable, although the flip down sunglass thingy is so so.  I don't feel claustrophobic in it and prefer it now. Wish the wife would wear one but she feels claustrophobic in it.  However, she hears me much better through the sound system now that I have the FF helmet and cross wind is much less noticable for me than for her.

You might get your wife to take a look at the Shark Evoline 2 ST helmet.  It's sort of the best of both worlds in that it can be worn as a FF and a 3/4.  It might help her get over the claustrophobic feeling gradually.

I use either a Nolan N43 Air or a Schuberth J1, both are a bit like open face helmets but with some chin protection - used to wear Shoei's but they just don't have the all round vision that these helmets have.

I've been riding with a full face helmet since I was a kid and was on the back of my Dad's Kawasaki Concourse.  It's something I'm so used to, it feels odd to ride without one...they are just so much quieter than going without.  I bought mine when I worked at the H-D dealer here in town; it's a Bell helmet and I'm pretty sure the shell is made from Carbon Fiber/Kevlar mix and the inside is blue Coolmax Fabric.  After I sold my Honda, stopped working at the Harley shop, it pretty much went unused for years.  Now that I get to reap the benefits of my dad owning an FXR4, it's been worn frequently.  I still love it, although the next time I'll either get another Bell or a Shoei like my pops.

My dad also bought some body armour from a company called high velocity that he lets me wear.  Super comfortable, cool, and fits underneath a t-shirt, bowling shirt, and most jackets.  It makes you feel like you could down a bike going 65 and walk away from the crash.  Another potential benefit: you'd never feel a body shot from a fist fight.  It could bring your trashtalking game at a bar to a whole 'nother level...ha ha!    ;D   Check them out here -       http://www.highvelocitygear.com/JuggernautBodyArmor.html

The Nolan N-43 Trilogy is the same way.  Wear it with the chin bar as a full face and without the chin bar for a 3/4.  It's also lighter than the N-103 that I wear.  She wears the N-43 just because it's lighter.

They are not the same, go take a look.  With the Nolan you need to decide first how you want the helmet and remove or install pieces as needed... With the shark just flip all the way back and you are done, nothing to assemble or disassemble every time you want to switch from one setup to the next.

I have been looking at the three, Nolan N-43, the 103, and the Shark Evoline 2ST... I have seen and tried the two Nolan at The Helmet Shop but have not been able to see a Shark Evo to test...

Currently using a Shoei Multitec Helmet - Modular - Flip-up that still has a year or two left in it (change helmets every 5 years).  But starting to look for my next one...

I have the Hybrid Half helm and the full face modular. I enjoy them both. I hated the halfshell, but I removed the bird beak visor, now I like it, lol.

My modular has a retractable sun shield, very cool.

Dropped two bikes. Landed face down both times. Had a full face on both time and walked away without a scratch. I always wear a full face when traveling but not on short runs.

Just put on a Shoei RF1100...Fits nice, vent things work good and I can see good but the shield squeaks and I thing the buffeting is greater than no lid at all...Maybe because to fit my giant, allbeit slightly deformed mellon, it takes a pickle bucket sized helmet.

Tryin to keep riding.   :-\

Right after Christmas a few years ago off of the discount table at my local HD, I bought a full face helmet that I wear when it is real cold. Otherwise I wear a HD carbon fiber half helmet 90% of the time.

I also wear the HD carbon fiber half helmet.  I appreciate how light it is and I can testify that after being thrown 20 ft in the air and landing on the pavement the helmet saved my life.  Hitting the pavement and sliding down the road my helmet outer layers were scraped down to the white fiberglass.  I know this helmet works and I hung it on the wall in my garage to remind me every time I climb on my scooter to ALWAYS wear a helmet  :innocent:

Shark Evoline 2 ST no longer has a dealer network in the USA... :-\
Nolan 103 giving way to the new N104 come January...  I think I can wait...

I think Pacific Powersports has picked up the distribution for Shark in the US.  I recently found a "deal" on Ebay for the Evoline 2 ST, so ordered it.  It is extremely well made and probably the most functional helmet I've ever seen.  There is an excellent review on the helmet on www.webbikeworld.com.  The chin bar gives the most space between my mouth and the front of the bar than any other helmet I've tried on...probably a function of the chinbar being able to be pulled all the way back to make it a true 3/4 helmet when you want to.  And the eye port is very large.  Well balanced, even though it's a bit on the heavy side.  They run just a bit on the large side....most size Large helmets are 58-59 CM, where the Shark Evoline is 59-60.  I'm 59 so it fits...sort of.  Nice cheek pads and if you wear glasses, it has a softer density foam where the temple part of your glasses go into the helmet...no pressure point there.  I am still trying to determine if the helmet shape fits my head, so have been wearing it for an hour or two at a time around the house to see if any hot spots or pressure points develop...the jury is still out.  I got such a deal that I can always sell it for what I paid and someone will get a new helmet for a great price.

The most difficult thing about purchasing a helmet is determining what shape your head is...Long Oval, Medium Oval, Slightly Round, Neutral (most helmets), Round, Egg Shaped, etc.  If you've got a Long Oval head and try to put it in a Neutral Helmet, it's like trying to put a football inside a basketball...you'll have pressure points either on your forehead, the back of your head, or both.  My head is somewhat oval shaped, I've discovered, so fitting a helmet is not easy for me.  The only company out there who makes helmets specific to head shapes is Arai, and they don't make a modular full face, plus they are expensive, and you can't find many dealers that carry them so you can try them on.  Another great helmet is Schuberth...their C2 is more for oval shaped heads, and the C3 is more for slightly round to round heads...but again, you can't find dealers that keep them in stock, and they are REALLY pricey.  But, the lightest, most areodynamic helmet out there in a Flip Face/Modular helmet.  Another nice helmet is the Scorpion EXO 900...it's a Flip Face, but the chin bar can be removed to make it into a 3/4 if desired...I'm not sure how often one would do that, but it can be done.  It is more for a long oval head shape though.  The Shark Evoline 2 ST is the ONLY helmet I know about that does what it does...removing a chin bar to make a helmet into a 3/4, like you have to do with the Nolan N43 or the Scorpion (there are some other ones out there too), does not seem very practical to me in actual use.  If I decide to keep the Shark, I'll write up a review when I actually ride with the helmet, install an intercom, etc.

Half helmets of any kind are just out of the equation for me...I keep getting a vision of doing a face plant on asphalt at 40 mph...not a pretty picture.  I've done face plants in the snow when skiing groomed trails, and it hurts like hell.  I'd bet that 70% of HD riders wear 1/2 helmets though.  But I'm seeing more and more wearing FF around here.  Whatever blows one's skirt up...

In all the research I have done lately on helmets, I would agree that Schuberth is probably the very best helmet on the market today.  It is one of the very lightest (they have a Carbon Fiber C3 out now), and probably the quietest helmet you can buy.  Particularly in a Flip Face...they invented it.  But nobody around here stocks them so I can try one on.

The best helmet, of course, is the one that fits you so well that you forget you've got it on, even on an 8-10 hour ride.

I bit the bullet and bought it online from revzilla.com. They do have a very comprehensive return policy. I do know that the BMW dealers here in Orlando have them in stock, so if you have one close by you might want to give thema a call and find out. I put on the bluetooth collar and works great.

My wife and I both have 3/4 and full face helmets by Arai. All of the communication was installed by JM prior to purchase. They are both great helmets and comfortable on the long ride. I have been riding over 40 years and never wore a helmet, but now with the law change I figure if I have to wear a helmet it may as well be of some value. Now after miles on the road I do not mind the helmet thing and even find them somewhat comfortable...

There's a lot of good info here so I hesitate to start a new topic.  I'm looking into getting a fullface helmet for long rides (no windshield here) and can get a deal on the Bell Star helmet.

http://www.bellsports.com/powersports/helmets/street/star

Does anyone ride with this?  Can you offer a review of it?

Thanks!

I run half helmet when I can, and full face in the cooler months.  I have been wanting to get a light weight, as cool as can be full face to extend the time I feel like I can survive down here wearing it in the heat.  Love all the information people have been posting.

I'm the same way.  This would be my first fullface and of all the reviews I've seen of fullface helmets in this price range, the Bell Star appears to be the coolest (as in airflow) and on the lighter weight side.  Interested to hear someone's take on this from the site.

I wear a Bell full face, wearng Bell full faced since the 70`s both dirt and street. I have been considering getting a open face helmet, but seeing a lady and here husband today at a resturant in Texas think they had been to Sturgis or heading there both of them had terrible wind and sunburn!

That alone helped sway my desision on that topic!

Hi all. Check the Shark Evoline Series 3. I bought mine 10 weeks ago (1000 miles) and I am very much satisfied. It is the best of both worlds. You can drive full or 3/4 and you can change in seconds. Just IMHO.

Ride safe and have fun.

Yesterday is the 1st time in years that I used a Full Face, I did back in the 80's when I rode sportsbikes, I really enjoyed it alot.
I can deal with it, I just have to shave off my Goat so it doesnt get pinched and pulled by the helmet, Im getting tired of the Goat anyway :)

Cheers.

I've been wearing flip face helmets for nine years with either full beards or goatees.  No reason to get too radicle about loosing facial hair.

Half helmet all year round here.  Have a great Arai full face gathering dust in the bonus room closet.  Great helmet, very comfortable and quiet, collector graphics, about $800 (14 years ago) and bought it when I had the 'busa (8 months) and wore it once since.  Retired my bell half face about 4 years ago for an HD hybrid half helmet.  Light, comfortable and love it.  As most of us on here commenting, been riding over 40 years.  Half helmet for the majority of that time.  Was wearing a Arthur Fulmer full face when I had my wreck years ago (30 years now....wow) and cracked it.  However, I still feel much more comfortable with the half.  Seems (to me) I can see so much better with a half.  Have a face wrap when it gets below 30... :2vrolijk_21:

I normally wear a Nolan w/shield and sunshield in Aus. but last year in Febuary, I rode from Orlando to L.A. with a full face Shoei that cost me $950 (Discounted) in Melbourne from the stealers, with a lift up front...Luckily, as I almost froze going through Flagstaff.

At home I don't wear it as I find it too claustrophobic, but I'm on my way over to Texas next week, to pick op another bike for another ride across your beautiful country, so as I love your mouintain areas, I guess the Shoei accompany's me again....(Keeps my large nose warm) :2vrolijk_21:

Hey Spydie:
The SF Police let us go topless in that parade, since speeds were at  about 5 MPH or less.  Had to helmet up once done. ;-)

Bought a Full Face Helmet in 2010 and had never worn it until today.  Wanted to get out and make a little loop today on the bike and thought why not wear the full face helmet since it was a little cool.(mid 50's)  It was really nice to wear and really enjoyed the ride.

Currently have 8 helmets (4 half helmets - 2 Vega, a Skid Lid, and a HJC), 1 open face with a face shield (HJC), a Harley modular (flip face) which made by HJC, and 2 Arai full face helmets.  Starting to appreciate the open face with the face shield and the modular and the full face helmets due to the amount of stuff that his hit me in the face.  I rode for almost 20 years using full face helmets only but I do appreciate something a little cooler during the hot humid summer months.

I just bought a HJC CL-MAX II to use in the early Spring and Late Fall rides as its still in the 40's here.  It did get up to mid 50's this weekend and I totally took advantage of that to ride.

Up until a couple of years ago I used a "novelty lid" for 15 years that was basically worthless. After hearing about a friends relative getting in a minor accident but major head trauma due to a similar "lid" I went to a DOT half helmet which I felt better about after I got used to it. I decided about 9 months ago to go "all in" and got a Schuberth C3 Pro (Europe has had it for over a year) which I fell in love with (only exception is poor ventilation due to it being a modular and believe it or not too quiet) but have been worried about riding with in in the middle of the summer. A couple of weeks ago I was in a shop and was telling the parts guy about my worry and he turned me on to the Schuberth SR1 which is really meant for racing so has amazing ventilation and 2 vents by the ears that can be opened to hear other bikes around you (or in my case my pipes and exhaust...). I have around 500 miles on it now and I love it! unbelievably light (I bought the European version online which was lighter) and I cant imagine a full face having any more air flow then this. If I cant wear this one during the summer then I am a lost cause...

I have this helmet also.  Is it possible to add a piece across the bottom of the chin that snugs against your neck like the Nolan?
