Spydglide Hit by Cager
« on: May 14, 2011, 03:43:24 PM »

Want to let you all know that on Thursday (5/12/11) as several of us were returning to Goldsboro, NC in a light rain, a moron in a cage decided to pull out in front of Spyd at the last possible second. Spyder is in Wayne Memorial Hospital with 3 broken ribs. The "Huckleberry" may be terminal.  RC

Yet another sample why road names fall short. I checked Spyd's profile and no real name listed. I then did a search on google found the Wayne Mem Hospital phone number. I called and spoke to the reseptionist and was transfered to ER and nobody could help me get connected to Spydglide. Not even sure his still there.  lol  but, It seems they just plain needed his real name.

So, Spydglide where ever you are, in the hospital or at home. Sue and I are wishing you a speedy recovery.

Spydglide (Gerald)...Man, I hate to hear this, both for you and your beloved Huckleberry.  With all the folks around here who care a great deal about you, and I'm one of them in a big way, you'll get well, and then we can all help find you another bike, whatever it is you choose to get.

Just get well so I can see you again in MV this fall, bro...It's been a while.

NEWS FLASH!!!!
I just talked to Spyder. He is in a lot of pain but is in good spirits, I think it's the pain meds. that allow the good spirits.
He thanks everyone for their concern and well wishes. He has asked me to post this and to ask us not to call as it hurts to talk a lot. My Bad for calling! He will be in the hospital for an undetermined amount of time as they are worried about pneumonia setting in. Keep ole Spyder in our prayers.
Thanks to all,
Mike

Ribs are difficult to heal, but Spydy is in good shape, so he'll recover quickly.  The Pneumonia is a concern with this type of injury, but I'm sure he's in good hands, and with all the positive thoughts going his way, that'll help.

Spyder, real sorry to hear this.....you're in my prayers.

Broken ribs are a double jeoprady....the pain to the broken ribs and then they have you blowing in that thing to raise the balls (to keep you from getting pnemoia.  And at the same time, you have to be careful about getting hooked on the pain meds.....double jeoprady.....or is that triple? :nixweiss:

Anyway, we're all thinking about you and wish a quck and complete recovery.  The up side is that you're still here. :2vrolijk_21:

Damn! I am extremely glad he made it thru this alive. I am painfully aware of what he is going thru and know that only time can heal. Gerald Grant will be in my prayers tonight and until I hear he rides again. I hope the ribs didn't puncture any lung as is common in that situation.

Screw the bike, he can always get a new one. Thank God it wasn't worse and he can still fight his way back. Maybe someone near can print out the threads and give them to his nurses. God's Speed Spydglide!

RC
Sorry to hear of this Spydy (Gerald) I hope your healing is fast and trouble free, and you are in the wind again soon.  You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Bad news Spyd - praying for quick recovery, but those busted ribs sure take their sweet time to heal for some reason!

If you need anything let me know - you and everybody else on this site helped me out big time when I went down with your constant encouragement - and I won't forget it.

A great big thanks to all ya'll !!!  I love you guys & gals.  Sorry it took so long getting a response but just got out of the hospital & trying to find a painless position to communicate......1st of all, I haven't seen my beloved Huckleberry, but the 'guys' tell me the frame is bent & it's 'totalled'.  I'll be figuring out a 'salvage frame title' for sure, as I'm gonna fix it back...it's my ride and I'm sticking with it.  ( I haven't even lawyered-up yet)  Still dealing with the pain/misery which will be longer lasting than I want (prognoses=2 months), but when Chappy called the nurses station, my outlook went into a whole new dimension.  I said a prayer for him (and Sue) and called for another Morphphine shot.  Just got released & back to my computer, hence the 'post'.  2nd of all, I'm lucky to have my right leg as the engine guard saved it.  3rd of all, I had the good judgement to give my pistol to a cop instead of shooting the inconsiderate cager that wouldn't even come out into the road to stop traffic or see about me as I couldn't get up off the wet asphalt.....he just stood over by his car.  I was riding alone at the time as I got separated from Nite-Al & Flyin' R in the rainstorm.  My number came up again & I'll just pay my dues for this life we choose to live on 2 wheels.  More later, need narcotics. :'( har!   spyder

Great to hear from you, Spyder!  Rest up and get well!  Sorry to hear about the Huckleberry, but glad you're going to be OK.  Looks like "OleGranny" might get a little more of a workout for awhile (once you're feeling better, of course), but I'm sure she's up to it!

Most important (other than healing) is do not accept any calls or visits from the other guys Insurance company, no matter how polite they seem. Their objective will be to "butter you up and pretend they have your best interest at heart". In reality they just want to ask trick questions to get statements recorded they can use against you later. You don't have to talk to anyone but your own attorney. Don't post any details about the accident on the internet as well.

I was hit by a woman who ran a stop sign and turned to hit me head-on. The quicker you get an attorney, the better off you will be. Most attorneys will tell you to be patient because these cases can take years to settle, but they will also make sure you get the right medical followups to assure you don't suffer long term damages that are not considered in a quick settlement.  Your cycle insurance should cover replacement and they will also get first shot at any settlement to recoup their costs. I highly reccomend letting them total the bike and kiss it goodby. I have seen first hand that you will never get a vehicle back to the condition it was in before the accident no matter how you try. Things will be damaged that are just not visible or discovered.. That is just what I found out by refusing to total one of my bikes. 8 years later it still has failures as result of the accident that no one caught.

Take your time, give plenty of room for total healing, and don't be in a hurry to settle until you are completely recovered long enough to be sure nothing else is gonna pop up. I had a tooth fall out a year after my last accident, it was because my face bone had been crushed into my sinus and it broke off the tip of the root poking thru into the sinus area. Best to you!

Sounds like he needs them both now!

Glad to hear Spyd  is doing OK... and I agree that as much as you may love your bike, it may be time to let it go.... you can get a new frame from the MoCo, but chances of hidden things (esp electrical-related) will haunt you for a long time unless you replace the entire harness.... not worth it IMHO.

As far as Lawyer..... good idea.... dont even discuss with the other insurance company.... tell them to talk to yours... make your statement to your company. assure they have the information correct and let them work for you.

Glad to hear that you are home again. I agree with GreetSlide a new bike is always better than a salvaged one. I have been down a few times myself and I am a lawyer so I know what it is like on both sides of an accident. Get a lawyer to represent you, and don't talk to anyone except your lawyer or post any facts about the accident on the internet. Keep us informed of your recovery and we will see you riding again soon.

Glad your alright so to say and you made a good call when you gave the cop your gun, they tend to freak out when a guy on a Harley is on the asphalt with a gun in his hand.  One thing for all of the conceal carry guys and I am one, make sure your piece is not hot.  My buddy ran into and incident and told the cop by the way I have a gun.  Cop said thanks, let me hold it and ran the Serial #.  Oops stolen, buddy was handcuffed and taken to jail.  Had to bond out and go to court, lost the gun but no charges as he bought it off another guy we know that bought it outside a flee market.

Your ribs hurt a lot worse when your hands are behind your back.

Glad your home Spyder.  Keep healing and feeling better and taking your meds.  When the time comes if you fix the 04 collect as many parts as you can then throw an assembly party some weekend.  I'd go east for that :2vrolijk_21: .

Sometimes I wonder if I should carry a weapon!!!!!

I never "wonder". -----  I never ride until I stuff my 357 in my holster. And I do not travel thru states any longer that do not have a reciprocity with Colorado's concealed weapon law. Just sayin.

Spyder, I am glad you are healing,  Good luck on a speedy recovery!

Dang it Ice, 2 months of the best season, weather-wise, and got to fix the ole Huckleberry or just putt around on Ole Granny when I do finally 'heal'.  :-* Thanks to all that have wished me well...I know I'm gonna drive you all crazy on the site since I'm bored to tears already with this busted ribcage.  Breathing deeply is kinda exciting tho.  Maybe I'll try & learn how to post pics and just quit with the quips. :huepfenlol2:  har.  spyder

Tonight?  After getting back from an absolutely glorious afternoon ride I totally enjoyed the rest of the evening reassembling a transmission for the someday-gonna-be-a-Road King project.  Had that baby scattered all over the table lift.  Bearings over here, gears over there, gaskets down that-a-way, keepers and bolts and seals (oh my!) every which way.

Put the case through the bead blaster and she looks brand new.  All together and moves like butter.  And damn she looks good with the natural silver case and the red (metallic burgundy!) top cover, oil fill housing, side cover and oil pan.  Some chrome 12 point bolts should be here late in the week to top it all off.

I know, that's not fair when all you can do is think about Huckleberry bits scattered every which way.  But whenever you're ready and have enough bits in a pile say the word and I'll come visit for an assembly weekend :2vrolijk_21: .

Just don't laugh.  Or fart or sneeze.  Or fall down.  Or take a too-deep breath.  Or cough or choke or gag or try to get lucky!

Manage that for a bit longer and it'll all be good :2vrolijk_21: .

Amen to that Spyder.  One time I got some ribs in the back.  That was even less fun than breaks in front.  Hurt longer.  And god help you if you've got allergies!  Speaking of; here's my all time favorite joke about sneezing:

Attractive woman boards a plane (it's better if you hear her in your head with something like a South Carolinian or an Irish accent).  A few minutes after being seated she sneezes.  The sneeze is followed by a dramatic almost convulsive reaction.  After a few minutes her breathing normalizes, she seems to have relaxed and all seems well to the concerned passenger sitting next to her.  He wonders what the episode was but since she mentioned nothing he respects her privacy and doesn't say anything.

Every half hour or so this repeats.  The woman sneeze and has this unsettling and obvious reaction.  Finally after the third time the man asks, "M'am, I couldn't help but notice that you seem to be in some distress after you sneeze.  Are you ok?  Should I get the flight attendant?"

(Remember, hear with the honey sweet accent.)

She says, "Well thank you sir, you're very kind.  But I have this... condition.  It is troubling so I hope it's not bothering you."

"Is it serious?" asks the man.

"Well sir," she says; "It's a little embarassing but since you're so kind I guess it's ok.  You see, every time I sneeze I have an amazing orgasm.  That's my condition.  I hope my little reaction doesn't bother you.  But I can't do anything about it sir.  So I do hope you do forgive me."

"I'm sorry to have bothered you" he stammers, "Is there anything you can take for it?"

"Oh yes" she beams; "I can.  Pepper, every half hour or so."

Good one Don, but I managed not to laugh (even doing the accented voice in my head).  I'm getting good at this...you have too 'cause it hurts too much to screw up.  My 3 ribs that are broken (not 'cracked' according to the cat-scan) are in the back also.  Isn't it great how they kept bring me pepper with my meals in the hospital, but even under the morphine influence ole spyder was too smart to open those lil packets. ;)  har.  spyder

So good to hear your feeling a little better Spyder, was sick when I first read about your accident. I know you probably havent even thought about what your going to do about your bike but please keep me posted. Dont know if you know this but when I first saw you on your B&B Seeg the lasting impression was what influenced me on my quest to get mine....for real.

I tore the meniscus in my right knee a couple months ago at work and I'm still trying to get it fixed. Cant ride do to the pain so I got my Seeg all apart working on its third phase of mods. Really hope we get together at MV this year. Would be great to spend some time with you again. Hang in there buddy.....Roy

Damn Roy, so sorry to hear of you being down healthwise.  If you're able to work on the scooter, that's something tho.  I'm still laid-up pretty much.....gonna be many weeks before I'll be able to think of riding again, but it's been 2 weeks and I can already do personal care things that I couldn't before, so I just thankful that I've still got both legs & not paralysed. Still working with insurance peeps to try not to total my scooter so I don't have a 'salvage' title.  I've only seen pics of it to this point, but I'm sure I'll put humpty dumpty back together again...I like that scooter and I ride 'em a long time before I change up.  Rode my knuckle 19 yrs. and wrecked it good but always built it back.  Get well and make MV and I'll do the same...see ya there.  spyder

Thanks Bootsie.  This ole bod doesn't seem to want to spring back like it used to.....I've been saying to my riding buddies for the past few years that I'm only one good tumble from ending my 2 wheel love affair....and I'm finding that there was more truth in that statement than I intended.  I'm still planning a comeback tour like all over the hill musicians, tho.  ::) har.  spyder

Thanks for the words of encouragement, Stu.  I don't know what I'd do without this site & all the great riders posting to give me a diversion from the miserable hours of doing nothing except waiting for the next pain pill.  The wifey is the one that is suffering the most having to put up with my sorry self in this helpless condition.  I'm missing some great riding weather, but the healing process started the moment the bones broke according to the surgeon.  Ride safe, spyder

Don't I know it Miker.........I'm thankful for so many things and being able to take narcotics is just one of many.  Broke bones hurt, but could have been so much worse....a buddy was hit the same way I was ( a long time ago when we were riding down at the beach, and he tore a artery and bled to death before we could get him chopper across to the hospital. )  How are you doing these days?  :nixweiss: spyder

Amen brother...

Me, ok...good days and then some not so good...Been out on short solo 100 mile donut runs the last two weekends.  Fatigue still creeps in, too easily for me.  I am having a hard time with slow speed right hand figger 8's for some reason. Also keeping my eyes scanning is not quite the auto-reflex it was, I "have" make myself scan. Brain salad surgery is friggin strange.

Highway speed gives me shaken baby syndrome, blurry vision and bomber sized pain in the squash...I ordered a 11 inch Freedom shield today
to maybe get some wind relief...Wearing a helmet is not so bad but I kinda dread going to a full face if the Chuck Norris windshield dont help.

We can cheer from the sidelines for now, missing Ribfest and Tahoe were a bummer but better n being dead. Slainte!  :drink:

Good Morning Spyder,
Just sending my prayers and best wishes to you for a speedy healing and full recovery. Thank God you survived this attack with a deadly weapon that these cagers are doing with it seems more and more frequency. With all the electronic toys and gadgets that people are using in their vehicles lately, we two wheelers face a lot more risk.
My wife Sarah and I are looking forward to meeting you and all the other members at the Maggie Valley GTG this September. I had my own medical situation that caused me to cancel last years MV, but I'm now back in the saddle. As we get older, healing takes a bit longer but you will get there. As soon as your MD's give you the OK, get started on an rehab program. Eat healthy, work through the pain and push your limits. You will feel better every day both physically and mentally.
 See you in September!!
