Cee Bailey and stock rubber windshield gasket
« on: June 03, 2011, 12:57:52 AM »

Just got my new Cee Bailey 15 today. Instructions show to mount it with the new hardware directly to the bike. While this will work fine, I also used the rubber gasket that came on the stock windshield. It looks great and fits perfect, so is there any reason NOT to use it?

The only thing I can think of is that without it there may be a small gap letting airflow under the shield. I haven't ridden it yet, but anybody know if it was designed to do that or if I'll be fine with the rubber part?

Did you use the supplied nut-certs that came with the shield? I didn't think it would actually seal to the stock gasket because of the shoulders on the nut-certs. I just installed my new 12" Cee-Bailey yesterday but I did not try and reuse the factory gasket.

I used the new hardware, but the gasket actually fits really well with the cutouts for the new nut-certs.

When I received my 15" Cee Bailey, I wasn't sure it looked right without the HD original gasket.

So I did what any red blooede HD guy would do and called Cee Bailey for support.  They were great. I was fortunate in that the engineer that desinged the shield got on the phone in said the shield was designed with the gasket but the shield would work without it.  So you can go either way.

I took the shield off and resinstalled the gasket.  I think it looks better with the gasket.

One quick point, the eningineer emphasized several times to not tighten the supplied screws too much.

Follow directions.

I installed mine without the gasket.  I was a little concerned about it allowing rain water to run up the inside of the shield, but that is not an issue.  I also got to thinking that perhaps letting a little air behind the shield helps break the vaccum created behind the shield.  I don't know if that is actually true or not, but it sounds good... ;)

My only concern is getting the bug guts out of that little gap without the gasket. It does look good without the gasket though.

For what it's worth, it looks great with the gasket. The 15" is the same height as stock so at 6' I look right over it, but it kicks the wind up about an inch or two over my helmet. I still get some buffeting on the sides on the highway and actually feel that I'm getting more from the back, but my helmet is non longer a parachute so it's a success!

I will try the gasket tomorrow, I needed the 12" because I wear a full face helmet and need some air flow through the vents.

I installed mine this week without the gasket and then rode it 700 miles to Missouri and back.  Worked great!  Mostly bought it for the BSP's benefit but she can't decide whether it's better than stock or not.  Doesn't matter, works for me :orange:
