HAS ANYONE NEEDED BODY WORK ON THEIR CVO?
« on: May 10, 2006, 11:26:20 AM »

HAD MY BIKE IN THE DEALERSHIP TO HAVE SOME PIPES PUT ON.  WHEN I WENT TO PICK IT UP I NOTICED A CHIP IN THE PAINT ON THE REAR FENDER.  THEY JUST BUFFED IT OUT AND YOU CAN TELL THERE'S A CHIP.   THEY ARE KNOW TALKING ABOUT SENDING IT OUT TO BE PAINTED.
THIS WORRIES ME!!  HAS ANYONE HAD TO UNFORTUNATELY HAVE SOME PAINTING DONE TO THERE CVO.  HOW DID IT COME OUT?  DOES HARLEY STOCK THESE PAINTED FENDERS ALREADY IN CASE OF ACCIDENTS?  ANY SUGGESTION WOULD BE GLADY ACCEPTED?

It was over five months from the time the dealer ordered replacement tins for me until they came in...I was not happy as the whole thing took way too long.

the good news?  They acyually look better than original since there are no longer any gold leaf overlap lines!

Brand new, pre-painted from the factory.  They did not have them on the shelf ready to go.

I had the same thing happen at the schmuck dealer when it was in for the 1,000 mile service. There was a small scratch/chip on the rear fender that I could tell was caused from the rear seat bolt when they were trying to install it.  The last time, they scratched the outer primary, so I looked the bike over thoroughly before I took off.  When I spotted the chip, I went ballistic.

They offered to have it fixed by a custom paint shop, and I told them they are welcome to try, but if it did not come out perfect, I wanted a new fender... period.  It came back and it was totally perfect. Granted, the chip was only approx 1/8", but you can't tell it was ever there.

The nice thing about accepting it this way is, if they try to fix it, and it comes out crappy, at least you have something to use that looks a little better while you're waiting the many months for the new one. Worth considering.

OK!  UPDATE  I'M NOT ANYHWERE NEAR A PAINT EXPERT.  IF ANYONE HAS ANY KNOWLEDGE ON PAINT AND BODY WORK PLEASE ADVISE.  THEY TOOK MY BACK FENDER OFF AND BUILT UP THE CHIP IN THE BLACK PAINT AND NOW ARE SPRAYING A CLEAR COAT OVER THE CHIP.  SHOULD I HAVE ANY CONCERNS ABOUT THIS WORK?

Don't sweat the details - Just inspect it closely when you get it back. If you can tell where it was, reject it...  Period.  It should be totally invisible.

OKAY!  AFTER THE FIFTH TIME GOING TO PICK-UP MY BIKE AND THE FENDER CHIP IS NOW FIXED BUT THERE IS OVER SPRAY ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE FENDER AND THE PINSTRIPE NOW HAS A SPLIT IN THE SEAM BETWEEN THE PAINT AND PINSTRIPE.   SO THEY ARE NOW ORDERING A NEW FENDER.

Makes one wonder why they called you to come pick up your bike if it wasn't right. Sorry to hear you're having such an ordeal with this issue ... doesn't sound like they know what they're doing.  :(

THEY HAD A CUSTOM PAINT SHOW WORK ON THE FENDER.  I'M NOT SO SURE THE PAINTER NEW WHAT HE WAS DOING.   IT JUST SEEMED THAT EACH TIME I WENT TO SEE THE BIKE SOMETHING ELSE WAS WRONG.  THEY DID NOT GIVE ME A HARD TIME ABOUT REQUESTING A NEW FENDER.  I'M HAPPY ABOUT THAT.  NOW I JUST HAVE TO WAIT FOR A NEW ONE!
