My bike just turned 5,000 and the rear tire is shot!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I ride pretty hard, ( I think ) HA HA.
But still, I have read several threads about guys getting 15,000 miles out of these tires.
I sure didn't expect to get that, but WOW.
I used to get 6 or 7 thousand out of my 08 tires.
Tire pressure is kept up, I ride solo most of the time.
Just not sure why my tire went so fast.
Have any of you guys had the new tire wear so fast????
I found the new elite with a 81 load rating, so I'm gonna try it, any other suggestions are more then welcome.
Thanks
Have a Happy 4th of July weekend.

I get more like 25-30K out of mine. Most of that time is on longer trips, but even in town I don't go through them like that. I think your idea of pretty hard is equal to my idea of insane.

I currently have close to 18,000 on mine.  Lots of tread remaining.

Short of doing burnouts on a regular basis, there is no way the rear dual compound tires should only get 5000 miles.  I consistently get 11k on the old style D402's, but I don't do burnouts or lock up the brakes.  I've seen people with the new D408's getting 15 - 20k consistently.  Either your definition of "ride pretty hard" is off by a factor of at least 2 or 3, or something isn't right with that tire.  btw, what is your actual tread depth measurement?  You may be letting your eyeballs fool you into a premature tire change.

Jerry,

I am at 2/32.
Anything under that fails state inspection in PA.
Believe me, I don't get it either.
I am an inspection mechanic and instructor at a trade school so I do get what you are saying about checking the depth.
I often get people in with there cars and trucks and they have no idea what good or bad depth is.

Plus I never like to push it with my bike tires.
I just happened to check it the other day before a long ride, and was like WOW, this can't be.
So I got out tire gauge and checked.
I don't do burn outs so that can't be it.
Just not sure what happened, that's why I put it on the board.
Thanks for you input, it is always welcome.

My first one (stock dunlop 09FLTRSE3) was shot by Harley tread depth standard at the 10k interval. Front I changed at 15k. In the past 25 years on my FXR, FXDL & FLHX I have always got around 10k on a rear and 20k on a front. That was Dunlops, Metzlers & one set of Pirelli's. I had a friend with a 2001 heritage 95" with head work and cams that was killing tires in less than 5k. After observing his riding style I came to the conclusion that fast accelerations and hard shifts he was spinning the tire and never knew it! Food for Thought. Lighter bike with allot of torque easy to spin the tire a little everytime you shift if your in it hard.  :nixweiss:

Just a couple of 2 cent remarks...I don't have enough experience yet with the "new" tires to see what I'm going to get from them, but on the older tires, I'd get between 5-8k out of a rear.  After stumbling on a couple of discussions on tire wear, I've read that downshifting is a big factor in wearing the rear tire down.  I downshift a lot, particularly when I'm riding agressively through curvy roads, and generally do it when slowing for traffic lights, etc.  I'm not going to stop doing it on curvy roads, but am making an effort not to do it so much in "normal" riding, letting the brakes do more of the work.  Old habits die hard, and I always downshifted in cars/bikes I owned back in the old days, so I think that's where it came from with me.  If I can get 10K out of the new type of tire, I'll be a happy camper...more will just be icing on the cake.  Brake pads are cheaper than tires, so I've got to change my mindset.  Hard acceleration wears them out faster too, even if you're not obviously "barking" the tire.  Of course, if you're riding the twisties more than straight line riding, you're on the softer compound of the tire, so it's going to wear more quickly...but it's a hell of a lot more fun... ;)

Just replaced my 09 SERG rear, and frt tire. 15000 miles. Dealer had a special that they would install for $8.00, frt was still OK but to good of a deal to pass up. Normally I take the wheel/tire off the bike and carry to the dealer and have them install the tire and balance for me. But @ $8.00 I just let them do the complete job.

I get about 10K out of a rear tire.  (usually 10~12K)

I have no idea how you could get 30K out of a rear tire.

I do ride a 11 FLHT.
I do raise a little hell, but this tire is hailed by the tire GODS to be great. HAHA
I used to get  more from the old tires that came on my 08 and 07.

Have been getting some great input though.
I do down shift hard in turns and when stopping, old habit.
Like some of the guys say, it is way harder on the tire, I just was expecting more with this new compound.
We will see how the new tire wears, may try using brakes just a little more when stopping, see how that goes.
Anyway, thanks for positive input.
Dave
