HD catch tray for oil filter
« on: July 07, 2011, 12:27:47 PM »

I was in the dealer yesterday and saw a tray that fits under the oil filter to catch the oil when you change the filter.
Anyone here try one of these??? I know what a pita it is to clean up after the oil stops dripping from the filter.
Thanks

Yes, and it's awesome... you just let the pan, filter or whatever dip away till its dry, plus you know have a closed container for all you hot oil changes!

Plus... unlike most other HD stuff the price is really reasonable!!!

Or are you refering to one of these: http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/gma_product.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524448774818&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302290431&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302290431&locale=en_CA&bmUID=1310059880019&bmLocale=en_CA

If so, they work OK...very exact placement is key. Yesterday tried it on the wife's Sporty and it worked there quite nicely. A longer hose may be usefull, depending on if/what type of lift you use...and the 'stock' hose likes to slip off. Mmm...this seems to be a trend...HD builds something ...then we need to modify/add to it to make it work better!

Those work...as stated, proper placement is the key.  I've also used half a soda bottle...it'll work too, but it's not HD Orange... ;) ::)

I use one, but I also knock (drill) a hole in the lower end of the filter before I take it off, letting more oil drain, works for me.

I put a hole on the top, on the end also to let air in for more draining.

Dave29,Regarding changing the oil filter.  I take an empty 1 gallon milk jug and cut it to fit. I have one for my Heritage and one for my 09SEUC. Also aluminum foil (not the thin stuff) can be shaped however you need and that works good too. I still might buy one of those HD ones, but if it doesn't work good I am sure they will tell me "that is normal they all do that" CAHDBIKER

Well the outlet tube on the tray is not barbed - just straight and smooth.  So the rubber drain hose can easily (and has) come off and then oil goes all over the place.  Tried putting a nylon tye on it but did not help.  May try drilling a small hole thru the hose and the outlet and running a very small nylon tye thru there to secure it.

I use one of these from easternperformance

http://www.easternperformance.com/products.php?product=Motorcycle-Drip%252dFree-Oil-Filter-Funnel-for-All-Harleys

pretty much same as the HD one, but even comes with a nail for punching a couple of holes in your filter to help it drain.

+1

I find that when I put a hole in the filter first, I don't need the catcher.
It looks cool on my garage wall though.

I just lay the bike on it's left side with a drain pan under the filter, then screw it off.  Oil flows straight down thanks to gravity, right into the pan.  The only problem is getting the bike back up on the tires afterward.  I'm thinking about mounting an electric winch to the beam in my garage.

I wonder if the rocket scientists in Milwaukee ever heard of gravity?
