Heated Grip??
« on: May 29, 2006, 09:22:54 AM »

Last week on a cold morning I had the grips turned up to 3, didn't seam to get the job done. I turned them to 6 to see if it was me, still nothing. I stopped for fuel and turned the ignition to accy. to hear tunes while fueling. Got on the bike and could hardly touch the grips! They only work on accy. position. Any ideas??  Wrongway

The heated grips are controlled when the ignition is in the ON position by the dial on the left grip (a rheostat?). If they only work in the accessory position, they are wired wrong. Warranty issue.

No its not the correct wiring if it is on the accessory circuit, there is a bulletin out on it.  Go to this thread http://flhrsei.org/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?num=1142274815/10#10
and get the wiring diagram.

Is there any way to check the heated grips for proper operation?  Mine do heat but they just don't seem to get hot enough even when set on 6.  I have nothing to compare to so they may be OK but would like to know for sure.

If you don't need to turn them down once you have used them for heating up your gloves then I would say they are not operating properly.  I have to turn mine down even on pretty cool days, once I have warmed them up and my gloves are cozy warm.  I use a fairly heavy glove also, so if you aren't getting the feeling of too warm I'd have a dealer check them.

Thanks.  Will do since they are definitely not that hot.

Mine have NEVER worked long enough for me to be able to tell how they should work. Best of luck.

I don't believe the problem is wrong wiring, the grips worked fine for 6 months, now only in accy. position. Wrongway

I didn't know they worked at all with the switch in the acc position. This is a real head scratcher! [smiley=huh2.gif]

When was your last service?  As noted in the previous post about the gang plug, someone changed where it is connected.  Check the wiring per the tech bulletin it is the only way it could get on the accessory circuit.

My first two sets worked the same way - from the left adjuster - then only if the acc button was on - then got real hot -- then stopped.  The third set just quit working.  The forth set - warrantied now for one year have continued to work since install - roughly a few months months now.  Good Luck, keep good records.   :D

mine have worked fine but I noticed everytime I pulled the clutch lever I felt a slight shock even with the heated grips off. I took the fuse out and it dosen't shock me anymore. I am going to have the dealer check it out when my new tins arrive.

I get the same thing, specially if I have a sore or cut that touches metal somewhere else.  Dealer said they couldn't find anything on mine, perhaps I'll have em check it again while they have the bike...

Hey Guys
I'm a newbie, think this is a great site and have been learning alot from everyone. I read the owners manual and it says the heated grips and seats only work with the acc. on, just thought I'd help out.

Hey Tgent13

Welcome to the site. It is amazing what you can learn when you actually reads the manual. Thanks for the help.

Then the manual is wrong.......the MoCo sent out a bulletin about wiring up the seat so it would work without the switch being on, sometimes they get plugged into the wrong connector under the seat, and the grips are on a completely different circuit with their own fuse.

Thats funny, mine work with the switch off.  I'll check the manual to see if it has changed.  It was built in March.

Hey, your right I just read the bulletin that says the manual is wrong and to check the wiring just like you said. I always learn something when I'm here. Thank you.

My heated grips did not work when I first tried them, really needed them in March!!!!  The owners manual says you must have on the accessory switch for the grips to work.  The heated seat works independently of the accessory switch.

I had a HD Dealer fix my heated grips during the 1,000 mile check up.  Now my grips work, but not with the accessory switch.  I do not have to turn on the switch for the heated grips to work.

This is a common problem.  Covered under warranty.
