Version 7.0 upgrade for 2620
« on: May 29, 2006, 04:35:20 PM »

Has anyone loaded the 7.0 update into their 2620?  I tried today, but after about 90 minutes (large file! 1.56GB) I get a message saying the GPS isn't connected.

I ordered the ver 7 disk upgrade and like to never got it Contacted Garmin and they told me that they were behind as the version 8 would be out soon.  So I am waiting for that instead of buying the unlock code for the version 7.  Hope I can bypass a version....

Bubba,
If you still have the registration code that came with your 2620 you shouldn't have to pay the $75.00 for the update.  The code is on a label on the outside of the box and also on an yellow piece of paper in the owners manual package.

Did the v.7 upgrade to my 2620 without any issues. As long as you register your GPS with Garmin, the first upgrade to the next uprev map is free, just the use unlock code you already have. After that you pay and pay and pay for map upgrades basically.Love to see them put POI (points of interest) capability into the 2620 software, but doubt they will.

After spending a couple of hours on the phone with Garmin customer service trying to load the update we decided to send it to them and let someone who knows what the are doing give it a try!

Also, since my 2620 was out of commission, I borrowed a 2730 to use on my trip to Memphis.  I was very disappointed!  The display on the 2730 is almost impossible to see in direct sunlight and when it calculates a route the distance is a straight-line calculation ("as the crow fly's") not actual road mileage.  Did I not have the setups right or is that the only way it calculates mileage?  I tried different brightness settings on the display, nothing helped.

Got my 2620 back from Garmin yesterday.  It had a bad hard drive.  Even though it was out of warranty Garmin sent me a new GPS at no charge!
