WHY 6200 RPM on REV LIMITER? or WHY NOT?
« on: September 26, 2011, 10:39:00 AM »

In 2010 I had my 09 SERG origanally tuned at dealer, Only mods are 09 OEM open header pipe, SEST PRO pt# 32109-08B OEM MUFF body's w/ Cycle Shack baffles, stock cams. The Dealer had Rev Limiter set @ 6200 rpm,  This June I swapped the OEM muffs for V&H slip ons and developed a stumble of idle & decel pop @2000-2100 rpm,
I recently had the bike retuned at a tuner that just tunes bikes, he provides no other aftermarket services. While he was doing the base line runs he recommended readjusting the rev limiter to 5750. his explanation for this the way I think I understood it, "AND I AM BY NO MEANS A ROCKET SCIENTEST" was that the TQ starts dropping around 4000 rpm and not making much efficient power beyond that rpm!  Decel pop is gone no more stumble off idle, also idles much smother while sitting at red lights!  TUNEING EXPERTS OPPINIONS PLEASE

Absolutely no reason to run your engine to 6200. By the look of your dyno sheet, it's all over by 5000 rpm. Only thing you accomplish by running it higher than 5500 is to beat the crap out of your valve train.
If you had some mods done, it would be a different story!

Why Not Lower?   power dropping like a rock at 5600 5700 anyway, 6000 rpm not useful anyway.

Most want to extend the RPM range, but they have a cam that keeps making power at that point.

lowering redline could save some engine wear.....

Agreed, having those big  pistons flopping around at 6,000 rpms, way past your power curve does nothing but wear it out faster.

Thanks for the replies! Thats pretty much the way Rob the tuner had explained the reason for lowering the rev limiter, It was ultimately my decision, and it made sense to me, I just wanted to make sure I understood . Planning for Cams &  Stepped Header Pipe in 2012     "Bostonboy"
