2012 FLTRXSE Issues- REPORT THEM HERE
« on: January 24, 2012, 06:44:19 PM »

1) HD Doesnt know how to tie bikes down in the crates... mine suffered damage in transit... all small, but it costs the moco with a screwup like this.

2) 71 miles.... found a drip... oil cooler adapter plate to engine case... no seal... WTF?

3) 136 miles started to wobble 35-45 mph... neck bearing in need of adjustment

370 miles and the charging system is dead.

Leaving the gas station the engine light and the battery light lit up... looked at the gauge and it was below 12... At least I was only 5 miles from home.. so I limped it home and called the dealer.

ARRRGGGGGGG!

Screw it... time for a beer.

The dealer can come pick it up in the morning.

Apparently that must be a common problem. My first bike was dameged pretty badly. I refused it. I'm now waiting on the next one to come in. I think this comes from a change in shipping practices by harley. Apparently they are goning low bid....and getting exactly what they are paying for! Damaged cvo's cost lots of $$$$. I guess we pay for it in the long run.

Well... the mirror and corner of the fairing were poking out of the crate. Left saddlebag latch, outer fairing, fairing seal on left side, clutch lever had a scuff from the cardboard. Also noted were scratches on the tank and console, and a crease on the front fender and bubbles in the clear on the front fender and burrs in the chrome on the engine guard.

If you look at total cost for parts and labor... still a lot of money... some by damage and some by defect... either way it cost the moco $$$

UPDATE on this:

At 9 pm on the night I thought the charging system had died, I went out to the bike and started it up.. voltage went right up to 14 where it normally is... so I rode it to work this morning.. no issues.

Dropped it off at the dealer on the way home from work.

They have to replace the painted parts damaged in shipping too....so they can play with it until all is fixed.

Did the dealer install a charging pigtail on the battery?  Loose connection would be my first thought on the charging issue.  Or, when they were fixing the oil plate problem, they knocked something losse down by the regulator.

The oil filter plate thing is not uncommon.

The wobble is not uncommon either, but is easily fixed if they put the swing to 1.

The shipping issues sound like careless handling by the shipper.

Not defending HD, but just sayin'...

The strap that holds the engine guard to the anchor point was loose... still think it was the shipper?

I've never seen a ratcheting strap secured properly come loose unless the strap itself was bad... this one was simply loose.

While the oil cooler plate missing the gasket may not be "uncommon" it is clearly unacceptable as dripping oil in dront of the drive tire is indeed a safety hazard (unless you're riding on old shovelhead).

Wobble has been addressed.

The really sad part is that the steering head bearing preload thing has been common for several years now, and obviously H-D doesn't care enough to fix the assembly process so it doesn't happen.  Same applies to the oil cooler adaptor plate that's been an ongoing issue since they went to the sandwich style plate in '07.

As for the shipping deal, the assembly plant secures the bikes to the pallet, so the shipping company cannot be blamed for failure to secure the bike properly.

On the positive side (such as it is) there seem to be MUCH less problems with the newer bikes that my 08 road king. It spent almost as much time in a shop somewhere than at home. I'm hoping for better this go around.

hmmmmm maybe they dont have far to travel to go from milwaikee to indiana... but they have to travel pretty far to get here...

AFAIK they are still shipped in boxes which are metal hoops attatched to the shipping pallet and covered with a cardboard box.

Without the hoops it surely would have been on the ground!

My left side saddle bag latch plate was scuffed during shipping as well.  I have an IOU from my dealership for a replacement latch and bag lid.

---skunk smelling like a lemon ?---

---out of box-- ferring out of adjustment 3/4 inch closer to gauges on right than on left side
---out of box-- inner ferring screws stripped
---100 miles-- wobble at 30-45mph
---300 miles-- puking oil out of the breather
---500 miles-- noticed the dot 4 brake fluid on the hydraulic clutch cover ruined the black powder coat
---1400 miles-- stater and voltage regulator went out, sat out a day of bikeweek getting "Harley dealer" fixed, (or half a$$ thrown together)
---1900 miles-- noticed chrome saddlebag skidplate had just fallen off the left side

I wonder how many more problems are encountered with the SEs being assembly line built as compared to SE team built, some may think no difference but if I went from my 09 SERG which has had little problem thus far (knock on wood) to a new 12 with a problem list with fairly significant issues, I'd say there is an issue.

Wait ! I'm not done. Now I also have DOT 4 fluid coming out of my clutch lever while I'm riding. I tried to polish it off but it seems to have ruined the clear coat on my glove box lid !! Arrgghh! :(

Don't try to polish anything, take it to the dealer and have them replace any damaged parts AFTER they fix or replace the defective master cylinder.  I'm assuming the plunger seal is leaking if the fluid is coming out at the lever.  Or of course the cap could be leaking or the banjo fitting for the line.  Whatever it is, warranty should cover it and any damage it caused.

[/quoteThanks Jerry, yes I have an appt. with the dealer next week anyway because they have to replace the outer fairing . I called them today to "go on record" about the leaking clutch and damage to the lid. I had cleaned it with harley gloss before I realized what it was but the drops definitely pitted the clear coat. So farI have no complaints about my dealer. They have been cool about all of the issues so far. It's just a pain to have problems with a brand new bike.

Well I must say that finding this thread has me all kinds of nervous, I pick my bike up tomorrow. Hopefully there will be no major issues with mine. I did go over mine aesthetically today while at the dealer and nothing I came across in that regard. Tomorrow I get to ride her for the first time.

Dont sweat it.. nothing makes them "unsafe" to ride except the wobble from the loose neck bearings.

All the other things are minor annoyances, but the thread was started as a place to look for issues others as well as myself have had.... pick yours up and ride it.

I'm not stressing it was just concerning to spot a 3 page thread so quickly on these bikes that aren't cheap.

What I am liking about this whole experience is that I am getting my bike from the get go how I wanted it and everything is under warranty. It just stinks for those involved to have issues that keep them from riding, especially on a CVO model.

The complaint about the voltage regulator threw me for a loop because I have a buddy out in AZ now from Miami on his 2 month old Limited and his took a crap on him. Toook the better part of a day to find him a replacement in the area and the dealers were all saying this has become a common issue on the '12 models, hence the low stock on the part.

This is not my first HD bike just my first CVO, and I can't wait to pick it up in the morning, wife gave me a free pass to ride all day, gonna start breaking her in from the get go. I can screw with my new iPod after I get some miles in.

Pick it up and take it on a nice long ride. Enjoy it and stop it back by the dealer, take it out of gear, and let the clutch out. If all is quiet, life is good. If it rattles like hell, you can join our club!  ;)

My current iPod (nano) has been working fine for two days now no issues. Might not even unbox the one that came with the bike.

Tha Nano series is a "flash" memory... the larger ones  are not and have an actual hard drive.

iPod touch 64 GB of non volatile memory. Plenty of memory, solid state and it is like an iPhone with out the cell.
I was using a iPod video 120. But the hard drive is a bit picky on the bike. Works good hidden in the truck though.

BTW, if you are using a hard drive pod and it locks up you have two choices, let teh battery die or do a hard reset. "menu" hold and slide the switch back and forth once. Should re-boot.

It will, but after a couple of jolts in a row the hard drive will lock up, to protect itself.

Yes.. mine did that on the street glide I had before my 2 RGs.. had to do with the handlebar mount. inthe saddlebad the iPod is suspended in the strap.. seems to isolate it well from road bumps. I've locked it up more riding my bicycle than on my motorcycles...  :)

2009 was the last year of the hand built CVO's, 2010 first year of the assembly line bikes.

After thinking about it, they must have their own line, because other than the frame there's almost no parts that are innerchangable.

No, they had their own hand built line through 2009.

Since 2010 they are built on the regular assembly line.

I did a tour in 09, of the CVO line when they were hand built.

There is no special CVO line tour any more as the line no longer exists.

Ok another update. Back in this thread, 3/28/12, I mentioned I had a leaking clutch lever, an appointment with the dealer, and no real complaints up until then. Well guess what ?! Now have have some complaints. My dealer picked up my bike on April 10th and I just now got it back on May 9th, that's right, ONE MONTH LATER !! I now have a new master cylinder and clutch lever as the fluid ruined the powder coating on the lever. I still have to wait on two painted parts, the glove box lid damaged by the brake fluid and an upper fork slider or "cow bell". Which brings me to another problem. When I turn my bars all the way to the left there is a very small amount of clearance between the fork and snap on wind deflector that is on the crash/highway bar. When turned all the way to the right it makes contact causing a dent in the cow bell. I could not believe the dealer had the nerve to try and tell me that it would not be covered under warranty. WHAT !!! I'm not sure who they thought they were talking to but lets just say I wasn't going away. They suddenly changed their tune after I talked to the manager. They said they would try to correct the problem when it is apart to change the out the new piece. I'll let you guys know how that works out.

Sorry to hear of your troubles.

I've looked at the deflectors but they are still in a box in my closet.

Stator or regulator just died on a road trip with 7845 miles on the bike.  Swapped batteries back an forth with my wife's bike so we could finish the last 162 miles to my parents house.  Hopefully a local dealer will get me in today.

Well my voltage regulator just went out, and right after I had it in the shop for the 1000 mile checkup.  Ticks me off, now I need to find/make the time to take it back in.

When I was dropping mine off for the failed regulator another 12CVO ultra pulled in, bad regulator.  Seems it is common with the 12's.  Not a regulator or stator for a 12 in MI.

Bad Stator at 125 miles on a "Skunk".  Making me feel like I should buy one and take it with me on long trips, just in case I can't find one if a failure happens again.  Any feedback on how the replacements are doing?

Mine is hanging in there, I drove to work this morning about 25 miles and it kept charging.  It was generally cool this morning, I think this has something to do with it.  So this afternoon, my dealer said bring it in and if he dont have a VR in stock he will take it of a new bike.  Which I thought was pretty cool!

So does the ECM store the codes even though the check engine light is not lit?  Cause he said he would have to run a diagnostics for HD, for the warranty.

Well just under 2,200 miles and issue number one, the horn took a chit this morning. Went to honk at my buddy to get his attention and nothing. Service isn't open today at my dealer, will see about tomorrow with the holiday, if not will take it in Tuesday.

Check the ground wire connection on top of the head. mine vibrated loose and horn quit. Took me a bit to figure it out but the bolt was loose and when tightened everything went back to normal.

I am about 2 weeks into my new 2012 CVO Maple.

24 hours in I realized there is a high-pitch congo drum sound in the top end at idle...

Dealer heard it, looked into it.  Took of heavy breather.... sound still there.

Cover the hole/intake with his hand... sound goes away.

Dealer (Service) says they will call HD and see what the mothership says.

Yesterday:  The dealer tells me HD says "it is normal"

Ugh.   The dealer himself knew it was not normal the moment he heard it.  2 other independent shops agree it is not normal.

The consensus is that it is the butterfly valve in the intake open/shut open/shut/open/shut and it makes this "cupping sound" (HD calls it)

ANY OF YOU HAVE THIS?

Seems to not be there when cold.

Thanks

March Delivery of 2012 FLTRXSE Blue

Minor scratches on front fender
iPod cable not connected to back of radio - dealer may have screwed this up with the hidden antenna install
Muffler mounting bolts rubbing bottom of saddlebags on both sides

All issues were corrected by local dealer and MoCo replaced saddlebags (lowers only)

Second issue now that has had my bike down.

Clutch master cylinder piston some how was not in bore correct and wore a bad spot into the piston and piston bore.  To the point pull the clutch in put it in gear and bike starts going.  Even a new piston cup could not temp fix it.
Waiting on new clutch master cylinder and piston.

I noticed an imperfection in the paint on the right side of the tank.  I can only see it at certain angles and actually it looks pretty cool, but it's an imperfection just the same:)

Had the right side saddlebag latch spring break yesterday.  Dealership wanted to keep the bike for 3 days to fix it, so I bought the spring and did it myself.

3 days to fix a saddlebag latch spring? That's nuts. Replacing the latch is the quick fix, replacing the spring is even quicker.

Yeah it broke on a Sunday and the service guys were booked up for the beginning of the week.  I think the $1.99 spring took all of 15 minutes to replace.  Should've pushed for a new latch though...  Oh well, it'll break again.

Well... the mirror and corner of the fairing were poking out of the crate.

Same thing with me. Here is how it was shipped to me. HD packed and shipped. Luckily this one had no visible damage. Seems to ride great too. Less a few minor warranty issues.  I actually deliver HD's to the local dealership. Two of the last shipments came damaged from the last trucking company. In Canada Big Freight is used. They sub contract the loads out to the lowest bidder. You get what you pay for.

Sorry to hear about all these problems on the 2012 models. I hope
that all these issues are worked out for everybody.

Knock on wood, but one of the main reasons why I will KEEP my 09'. Last
year of the "Hand Built" CVO's.

Good luck to all and Ride Safe!

Who told you that, a buddy or a salesman at a dealership?  A buddy I could understand giving you outdated information.  A salesman should know better, but many have found that the employees of the typical Harley dealership know less than the average customer.

Anyhow, the paint is done by an outside vendor as it always has been.  The actual assembly of the parts is done on the main assembly line these days, whereas in the past the CVO's were assembled off line in a separate area by a small team of people.  Some might insist this made them a "custom" and thus a better build, but in reality the odds of getting all the parts screwed on right and tight is better on the main assembly line using production tooling.

Harley quality isn't all that great regardless of where it's screwed together.  Paying a premium price for a CVO doesn't change that.  What you get for the extra cash is the paint job and some accessories from the catalog installed at the plant.  Think of it as being similar to the top of the line trim package on a car.  You get a bunch of optional stuff, but the build quality isn't any different than the lesser models.

I think I may have gotten confused. Maybe not though I'm not sure. I remember reading they were hand made, but it could have been an old article. And the guy at the dealership who tried to sell me this same model bike ( but failed ) said they were hand painted. I probably put two and two together and got three.

I actually got this bike from another province used. Yes a used '13. With 750 km ( 450 miles ) on it. I paid 8k less than the original purchaser too. I paid 3k less than new and it has cams, exhaust, SE tuner and some other accesories.....I was worried the deal was one of those too good to be true thingies, but so far so good. Less a shabby shipping job from the HD dealership, a weird shifting issue, and a seemingly impossible to use properly stereo all seems well.

On that shifting issue though. Anyone else have an occasional hard time getting her back into first? Sometimes I can keep pushing er down but nothing. It's like she continuously jumps back into second. I would have to engage the clutch a bit, roll a bit and then put her into first. Is this a warranty issue? Or just some of HDs hidden pleasant treats.

That's absolutely not normal, and is a warranty issue.  It's not uncommon to find air in the the hydraulic clutch system on new bikes, keeping the clutch from fully disengaging, which makes shifting clumsy at best.
