Chubby 575's with Heat Demons, anyone do this?
« on: February 06, 2012, 11:34:28 AM »

I want to change my stock bars out for a pair of Chubby 575's and I want to do heated grips while I'm at it.  I have read several threads on this subject but haven't found one where someone added heated grips.

I had Harley heated grips on my 06 Ultra and they broke 6 months after I got them so I don't want to do that again.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You need to check with WildOne's to see what the inside diameter of their bars are at the ends and then contact Symantec (Heat Demons) to see what the ID of the bars need to be.

It's also possible that Symantec or WildOne's already knows if this has been done with their two products.   Good luck and let us know what you find out.

Have had Heat Demons on 3 bikes with great results.

Thanks for the replies!  I'm pretty sure the bars have to be machined to make it all work.  I have a friend with a machine shop so that's no problem.

I'll get in touch with these guy's and see what I can find out. ;)

Some of the stock bars need machined.  Not the Wild1 bars.

I talked to Chubby's and he said that if I use the Heat Demons I have to machine the in side of the bar to accommodate the heat demons.  He didn't recommend that because the bars wouldn't be a strong which makes sense.

He told me to get the Harley heated grips so I looked on Harley's site and every heated grip I found say's it won't work with internally wired bars? ???  How do they do it on the Ultra's then?

The only modification I need to do with the Harley heated grip is cut of a little of the end of the bar to make room for the shorter inside grip because of the heater control.

Does the CVO Ultra have the heated grip wire on the outside of the bar?

heat demons are a flat flexible item, you roll it into a circle and slide it into the bars, not sure what would need to be machined

I very seriously doubt that if you machined the bars you would weaken them enough to be a problem. The twisting and push pull forces on the bars are not so much at the ends as they are in the vertical section. The forces at the ends are spread out over the width of your hand. Since only the most lateral part of the bars under the grip is going to be machined, I doubt weakness there is any issue.

Not sure why the mftr is saying that.  I've got Heat Demons inside of three sets of Wild1 bars (including the 575s mentioned here).  Have also installed Heat Demons inside of three other Wild1 bars I can think of right now.  ID of the bars is fine for the Heat Demons elements.

I think the reason for machining the bars is the TBW set-up.

I guess if you have a competent machinist it shouldn't be a problem.  If the machinist get's off course opening up the bars it could get fairly thin toward the end of the bore.

I would rather have the Heat Demons because I don't trust the Harley heated grips.

According to the Heat Demons website the amount of material taken out of the bars is about half the width of a dime, so  :nixweiss:.  This extra space created would then be filled with the heating element so no problem for the TBW system. As TL said it's worked for him several times, so go for it.

As a side note I just emailed Heat Demons to ask why they dont offer the controller in a chrome mount with a black switch so they'd match better with our bikes. I know I'm anal. If I get a response I'll post it here.

That's come up before.  One guy even bought two switches and mixed and match to get the look he was after.  In application, however, the chrome switch isn't an issue visually.

It's over where you expect to see chrome; in the area of the clamp.  The whole thing just blends in.

If using with Throttle By Wire you will need 7/8" ID.

I'm ordering the bars today, still undecided on the heated grips at this point.

I should probably put some miles on the bike with the stock grips and figure out if I like them or not.  If I don't like them I know I can use any grip with heat demons but I decide to go Harley heated grips I'll have to see whats available when I get that far.
