Spiderman's Recovery
« on: July 16, 2006, 08:18:39 PM »

To all who have been wondering about Spiderman (AKA Big Brian),  I just want to give an update on his condition.  I'm not sure if he wanted to keep this private,  but if this pisses him off,  I'm sure I can take him (well as long as he is still healing........after that....I'm a dead man).  The surgury went well (doctor said his old knee was the second worst he's ever seen.....I believe it,  big man was in some kinda pain......rarely showed it though).  He got out of surgury on Friday afternoon and made good time coming around.  Saturday he was in good spirits and talking on his cellphone (actually pretty happy to be out of the heat wave out here....it's been in the 100's+ the last few days).  I went to see him this morning and he told me that he had a 104 fever on Saturday night,  this set off my own little alarm (when he had his hip replaced,  he developed a staff infection that got really messy,  and damn near took the rest of his hearing....the little he has left {strong antibiotics will do that}).  He went for a good walk this morning (maybe 20 feet or so), and didn't look too good after that.  The fever had broken and his vitals were good.  I left so he could get some rest,  and about an hour ago,  Linda called and told me that they moved him into ICU.  I haven't heard anything else as of this point,  and only DIRECT family is allowed in to the ICU,  so I'm waiting to hear from Linda to see what's happening.

I will ask everyone here to say a prayer for my favorite brother.......as I don't know what to think at this point.  I can tell you the the man is strong as a freakin horse,  and I hope the doctors are just being careful at this point. I'll keep you posted as soon as I know anything.

I'll be praying for him.  Funny thing--I thought about Spiderman today.  I spent the day dinking aroud with the wife and went into an antique store in a little town across the state and saw a stone paperweight with "Vaya Con Dios" carved into it.  As we all know that's Spiderman's handle under his avatar.  Nearly bought it and sent it to him.

Beagle,
Thanks for the update. I'll be keeping him in my prayers and tell him I'll talk to him soon.

BTW - If he's going to be mad about your post here don't worry he'll be mad at both of us. ;) I'd already started a thread (Spiderman's Stealth Chrome) about his condition/recovery.

Beags, when next you get a chance to see the great man, please pass on my very best wishes for a full and speedy recovery.

Brian has been good to me in my time here and we have had some nice PMs going back and forth

Tell him I'm still wearing the "dago" shirt he got me and I hope he listens to Jimmy Nail - Crocodile Shoes while he is "exercising" in the jacuzzi.

Cheers

I just got an update on Big Brian.  It turns out hat he suffered a heart attack yesterday,  blood pressure dropped like a rock, and heart rate skyrocketed.  I just spoke to him and will visit later today.  He is still in ICU (so they are keeping a close eye on him).  I'll pass along all the best from everyone here and update the site if there are any changes.

Sounds like we need the CVO gift basket patrol to get fired up again as we did with Harry.  There are no good heart attack episodes.

If you can believe this; I have one "good" heart attack story.  Good freind of mine was headed to the 100th.  Had a rear tire blow out at speed, tore him up pretty good.  While he's in ICU, he has a pretty severe heart attack.  About the only thing that saved him was being in ICU on blood thinners to prevent clots from the busted leg.  Take about timing.  Had he not had his accident and then had the heart attack, he wouldn't be here today. :o  As I've always felt, when you're number is up, it's up.  Doesn't matter where, when or how.

I hope everybody followed my train of thought that BB's number is not up and he'll be with us for a long time to come.  After rereading my post, I wasn't sure I was clear.

[size=16]I just got back from a quick visit with the big man.  He's still in ICU and will probably be there for a couple more days.  He looks good,  and his spirits are upbeat......(of course he did have that magic button that makes EVERYTHING alright.....they got the best dope in ICU you know.....).  They say he lost some fluids and his heart rate was up,  BP down a little,  but I think that's what the Doc's wanted for now.  He's due for a mayocardio something or other tomorrow that may shed some light into what the F happened (you know,  they shove a bottle of dye up your a$$ and then check your heart for lumps and stuff).....but all in all,  I think he's out of the woods for now.  Kinda ironic though.....you go in for a new knee,  and just to take your mind off the pain in the leg.....they throw in a heart attack  (I can tell you,  the last thing he's thinkin about right now is the knee).  I forwarded all the good wishes from everyone here on this thread, he say's thank you to all who have him in their thoughts, and said don't worry,  he'll be back breakin' eveyones balls and spendin' their money here soon enough.

Update,
I just went to see Brian at lunch.  He's still in ICU, and waiting for the master reset (I guess he has an irregular heartbeat,  so they're going to take him in and do a reboot).  They monitor his heart,  and when it starts screwing up,  they give him 30-40,000 volts.....kinda like Pavlov's dogs.......do it right or you get pain.  Anyway,  he plans on being home on Friday sometime.  I think he's had enough of this crap already.....not really sleeping well,  sounds a little tired.  He told me to say thank you to everyone for the good wishes and prayers.  I'll be seeing him later tonight and if anything cahnges,  I'll let everyone know.

Beags...hope the reboot works...I know he's sick of being in the Hospital!!  A person has to go home to get any rest, 'cause they're always coming in there and pokin' you with something, putting something in you, or taking something out...a man can't get a break from all the care they're gving  ;)  Tell B that I wish him well, and to get all his stuff synchonized again...he's got the new kick stand, just get that motor tuned right!!

If I'm on the right track here I think what they are going to do is similar to getting zapped w/the Defibrillator. When your heart has an irregular heartbeat such as V-Fib, which is what happens when you have a heart attack the rhythms get all wacked out and your heart shakes like a bowl of jello. Which doesn't pump any blood because the muscular functions aren't in rhythm. In a controlled environment (hospital) there are other irregular heartbeats that a qualified person (Cardiac Specialist) can also shock to get your heartbeat rhythm back in order. I would think this is what Beagle is talking about. I don't remember any mention of a pacemaker.

Don,
No he does not have a pace maker,  he had murmers that the doctors were concerned about.  I guess they just give a jolt or two to "reset" the hearts rythm.  I guess he only needed one jolt and he's OK.  He'll be out of ICU today,  and probably home tomorrow or Friday.  Looks like all the prayers worked.  Now he can concentrate on recovering for the knee replacement.

You know Big Man's gotta be tired......last time I was in the hospital,  I didn't get more that 2-3 hrs sleep a day.  They're always sticking a tube in you,  or pulling a tube out......we need a stool sample, blood sample, urine sample.  I guess it wouldn't be too bad if they sent one of those candy stripers in for a sperm sample every now and then...LOL.  I think he's coming home today,  his laptop is all set,  so after he settles in,  I'm sure the ball breaking will continue.  That's how we'll know he's feeling better.

Pain in the ass, you can't sleep, you want out etc.  The reset should be good, my father in law felt like crap after surgery until they jumped him and his rhythm got on track.  Maybe Big B will acquire some rhythm or improve what he has.  Glad to hear it is going well.

Please give him, yet another, set of prayers for his speedy and painless recovery. I know that pain. I went through it a year and a half ago. I also have to go back so that the idiot physician who did the surgery can go in and fix what he did wrong, and get paids to do so again. I really wish I could get paid twice to do a job. So, If I make a mistake, I get to try again, and get paid! Note the tone of resentment?

All kidding aside, and this is something I don't say to make excuses for the all too common errors that are part of the trade, but that is why it's the medical arts and sciences.  Because it is still every bit as much art (i.e., conjecture, inference, supposition, extrapolation and guesswork) as it is science.  Compound that simple fact with the all too common mistakes given us by physicans too tired, stupid or unskilled to be practicing on any given day and we're much better off staying healthy.

(not that I have any particular opinion on the medical profession......)

Well thw Devil went down to Dago and decided to F%%k with me. He was a serious man and I tell you all I wasn't sure who'd win. He jumped up on my hospital bed and danced a little jig and even had his right hand man that reaper creap fiddlin the joyless dig. Well he looked me right square in the eye and said you mine now boy. And that's when I'd had enough and roared in the bastards face. You think I'm such a worthless punk you can come in here and crow. You think I don't still have the thing that makes me what I am. Gimme your fiddle and start running, cause you'll only get once chance. When I lay my hands on your bony ass, I'll be doing the dance.

I'm back everyone. Exahusted from the fight. Once again so respectful of the gift of life. In complete awe of the words and prayers sent out to me. There was a moment so brief and so clear in my mind when I almost gave up and like a song of angels the prayers sent out to me by all of you pulled me back. There is much of this life that I think about and do not understand. I suppose Ihave the irreverence toward all things silly and pompous because of how much I respect life itself. I am in your debt all of you

To my brother Matt
All I can say is that everyone on this site should have a brother Matt in their life. Remember the motto of the MMMC bro ?  " A brother is a brother "  ?   You are and so much more I cannot express it.

OK,
Once I'm over feeling sorry for myself in a day or so, I want eveyone to know something.

                                             I'M ON YOUR chit  !

G'day everyone.
Things are going well if I am to believe the PT ladies who come in three times a week and torture my old ass. I am able to bend my knee to about 85 degrees and strighten it to about 175. That's good since before the surgery I was at about 75 and 165. Still a lot of swelling and mid grade pain. As to my heart issues, I am not sure. Seems like I may have some lingering problem there with fatigue, but it is too soon to tell.

So I've been checking out the posts around the site on the new 07 models. A couple of things come to mind. First, I see people chatting up doing a 103 to 110 conversion. I have to ask, if you're gonna get into your motor why not do the 113 ? Maybe the Dawg or Hubbard can answer this. Next, reading the specs, there are a few cool little items listed. Remote Saddlebag and tour-pak openers ? So this means there is a new locking system on hard luggage ?
Overall I have to say I like what I see in 07 and I'll tell you why. To most of us a Harley-Davidson Motorcycle is a pushrod air cooled V-twin. Yes, the V-rods are exceptional and the engineering behind them is superb, but if all H-D's were water cooled overhead valve motors. a lot of what we all love about H-D would be gone forever. Those of us on this site are the best of the best (or worst of the worst) when it comes to bench racing the H-D Mfgr process. We dream of 120" factory motors with Perewitz paint jobs and chrome everything. So the factory came out with a 110 and somehow that's a letdown. I think not. I think it represents a big step for the MoCo. When you stop and think of how many years it took H-D to get beyond an 80" motor and now just 8 years since the intro of the 88, we are at 110. I think that's significant. I think it represents a forward thinking company trying mightily to keep it's boots planted firmly in the history we all cherish. I am glad that the V-rod is still the V-rod and the rest of the model lineup moves slowly forward. I for one need to have some things in my life I can look to as not leaving me behind.

There's a song playing in my head, can't make out the words just yet, but the tune is of the open road with friends waiting at the end.  I think of MV and seeing all of you whenever it plays in my mind and I smile knowing there's good days ahead

Good deal, Spiderman!  Enjoyed your post and hope you continue to progress in the mighty fine manner that is apparent at this point ......  I think the heat has got us all 'shut-in' to a degree and thinking fondly of crisp mountain air with leather jackets for the higher elevations of MV.  Keep on keeping on and making the progress you need to Bro, and don't hurt any PT's, 'cause there's a shortage of them everywhere.  :-? har!  [smiley=beerchug.gif] spyder

BIG B glad you are healing. Keep up the good work.

When you talked about the 103 to 110 conversion I agree go straight to 113. It is a cheap up grade. Now the good news there is a big bore kit soon to be released for the 110. Can you say 117?????

Keep up faith. I know it's hard. It is killing me right now to just sit around( I can't imagine what you are going through)but it is going over 100 degrees today and the A/C works fine.

Get well soon MV is just around the corner and George will be in the freezer. Yep thats what I said in the freezer. The colder it gets the denser it is and you get more bang for your buck in that small glass!!!!!

Hey Dawg,
Thanks for the advice. Hope you are on the mend as well. Through all of my troubles, I've been able to laugh. WIth the ribs being what they are, you can't even do that. Man that sucks. Ice cold George sounds good. Just gotta make sure I'm off the percocet by then or you'll have one wise ass left coast Maniac on your hands. LOL
As you may recall from some of my earlier posts, I've been kicking around some motor mods for some time. As the year went by and the rumors flew I decided to see what the MoCo was up to in 07 before I made up my mind.  I called my favorite parts guy at SD H-D yesterday and talked about this some. He is offering me on 15% off on a H-D/Jim's 120. Since neither of us knew what else I would need to do to swap, (Bigger Throttle body etc ) rhe is researching the bottom line for me. Given the machine work involved with 103 - 113 etc I think this is the best way to go. Beags and I can swap out the motors in a afternoon and then I can have the new moto set up on the dyno for break in and then find John Golden in Daytona after I leave MV for a good tune with some good miles on it.

Brian,

Not sure what 15 percent off is for Harley, but I would check with Short Block Charlie in Arizona on the Price of the 120 Jims motor I am pretty sure it can be had for about 6500 stock.  Cost is like 5850 last I heard.   I would also get the heads done if I were going that far for extra 750 - 1000 bucks.

Just got back from the PT lab. No more walker Yahoo. Am on my own two feet with a cane just for balance. Am doing very well with the knee and starting to get around good. Now all I need is to hear I have no permanent damage to my heart from that little twilight zone episode and I'll be a happy C.O.B. I see the cardiologist on Tuesday and should get some info from the radioactive crap they pumped into me and stuffed me in a big ole nasty noisy clostrophobic freakin machine. Sheeeeeeeeeeeeet, sometimes I swear the cure is worse than the sickness.

Had my appt withh the Cardiologist yesterday. He says no permanent damage. I'm good to go back to work and soon as my Orthopedic gives the word ( 9/18 is the projection) The heart attack was a weird confluence of events that all came together with the surgery. Have to watch my diet (who doesn't) get more exercise ( the whole idea behind the new knee) and should be fine for years to come ( no guarantees of course)  The Maquesses de Sade     ( physical therapist)  continues to put me through hell three times a week but I am making gains. Walked around with no cane today. Still have no strength in the knee and am not ready to ride again yet, I don't think I could hold the bike up with the left leg and I've always been a left leg down rider. Appreciate all the support, my wife says all of you are great and have renewed her faith in everyday folks. Me too !  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Big B,  thanks for the update, sounds like all is going well.

You know we were all holding our breath and talking to the man upstairs.

Understand the Marques is a real task master, but all for the better down the road.

Be well and keep up the good work with the PT. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Rode down to San Diego H-D. Man it felt nice to be in the wind, Elvis looking sharp in his new Lounge Lizard outfit. Talked to the owner who A) informed me he loved the bags and seat, but could not afford a set RFLOL  B) Asked me,  did I want the new Orange RG delivered on Haloween ? ( Like I said before, why is it always Clowns ? ) But it was great. Lot of people droolin over Elvis and askin about the bags and seat. Tailup sent me a bunch of flyers for Alligator Bob with the stuff and I handed out maybe six. One guy I expect to have some kind of a Vegas theme set-up done. High end contractor with a stable of bikes and hates being outdone. So then it was off to Cycle Visions to check out the latest V-Rod bagger Randy and Andre had built. Wish I had a camera with me. Gorgeous. No price tag on it and I'm not in the market so I didn't ask, just wanted to see it. Jock posted their website awhile back, I'm sure they've got this bike on it. So after that, back up I-15 to home, total of about 50 miles and I am beat, the knee is throbbin, but the grin is ear to ear and I can't wait till tomorrow so I can do it again.

SPIDERMAN, glad that you are doing better [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] I know that it felt great to get on the bike again.  Even with the pain in your knee I know that you had a grin from ear to ear [smiley=ears.gif]!!  Cuz that is the way I felt when I got back on my bike after my mishap a few years ago.  Take care and don't push it to much!!

Certainly not an Italian linguist, but do have a working knowledge of the language so as to communicate when in country.  I suspect that "Cumare" is a local or American offshoot of the word  "Culminare", a verb meaning to culminate or climax.  In Italian slang the word is often used as a sexual connotation and nope....not me...and not going there when applying it to a name for a new scoot..... ::)  You're on your own with this one......

Give that man a Ceegar  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] My buddy Tony pronounces it " Coo mahd eh "

What did I have in mind ? Tony put the idea in my head last Friday night when I first got the new outfit on Elvis. I dropped by his pub/restaurant ( O'Harley's) {and that's another story}  , and  - - - - - - - well, ask me in person at MV for the rest of the story.

I dropped a Jim's 120 into my 05 Deluxe softail.  I put a Zipper's 54mm Thundermax throttle body.  I just finished breaking it in.  It's like a rocket.  It will need a oil cooler, which is on order.  Rinehart 2into1's work and sound great.  Good Luck!

Hey FLHTCUSE06,
Welcome to the site. Hadn't noticed you before. Sorry for the late handshake. Keep us posted on how the Jim's motor work's out for you. You might start a new thread on it in the twin-cam section. I have the Croc bags and seat on Elvis and the new RG to absorb so it'll be awhile before I buy one these motors, but I still have an itch to own one, so I will look forward to updates on yours.

Thanks

Hey Y'all,
I just got back from San Diego H-D. The new " artificial pumpkin " is in. I had hoped to be there when they took it out of the truck and uncrated it, but it was already out of the box and on the shop floor when I showed up. Ok, here's where you get to rag at me. Got down there with my old Sony floppy disc digital and lo and behold no freakin disc. Do you think anyone at the dealership had a floppy ?Nyet. So the just out of the box pics went by the boards. They are doing set-up and I will pick it up tomorrow and I will have a disc with me to take some pics to post. I absolutely love the Mirage Orange Pearl Paint, and of course I've always liked Road Glides. I'll be like a 6 year old on Christmas Eve tonight, waiting for tomorrow to come.

I am going back to work on Monday ( 9/18) after what seems like a long two months. I cannot ever repay all of you the righteous words and prayers of support you have expressed. Thank you seems insufficient, but it is the best I have to offer.I would also like to say a special thank you to those who sent me PM's exhorting me to get after the Physical Thereapy 110 % . I cannot stress enough how pushing myself to the limit with PT has brought me back in what my PT folks say is incredibly quick time for a guy my age and size and with the extent of damage to my knee.

To those who sent cash to paypal for a get well basket for me. Thank you so much !!! Talk about perfect stangers. Also, I would like you to know, that after what happened to me with the heart attack, I asked for the money to be donated to the [highlight]American Heart Association[/highlight] in name of this web-site. I felt like that was the right thing to do. I hope all of you who donated think that was ok as well.

So now that I am near 100%, have a new bike, new clothes and new leathers, it's time to " get out on the highway, lookin for adventure."  I am geeked as my best bro Beags says at the prospect of meeting everyone, hanging out, riding and whatever else may happen in Maggie Valley. To those attending and everyone else on the site, ride safe, ride smart and never ever trust the cagers.

Lastly, a special thanks to Brother Matt.   You're as big a pain in the ass as I am bro and I don't know what I'd do without you !  L & R  Forever

Adios amigos
                  Vaya con dios

d00d,
Here's a rundown of the last 32 hours. Picked up the " artificial Pumpkin "  Rode up to the top of Mt Palomar and back (150 miles ) spent 3 hrs installing OCD items. Went to physical therapy. Had dinner with wifey. Took wifey for a ride ( 25 miles )  Rode 200 miles out to the desert and back. Slept for 7 hrs, rode 100 miles, installed more OCD items. Went to physical therapy.  Kinda beat right now, I'll post some pics soon.  ;)

The new motor is excellent. Not quite the power of our 103's but it's real sweet, especially the way it works in tandem with the gear ratios in the six speed. Pulls good in every gear, surpisingly so in 6th. Exhaust is quiet. Love the handling of the RG  Really windy going over the mountains on the way down to the desert floor last night but the bike was real stable. Ran it through the twisties up to Mt Palomar and it lays down nice in the corners. Windshield height is off for me. I am tall in the body. Lot of turbulence on my helmet. Probably should buy the tall windshield for trips and the chopped off one for local riding. Overall though I am real happy with the bike and glad I bought it.

Oh yeah, total shocker, it came with a tool kit.  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Spiderman.......sounds great!  Glad it's turned out to be a good scooter (a 'keeper').  That's the 1st report that I've heard on one, esp. from a 103 pilot that can give a comparison.  You must be getting along pretty good in the rehab of that knee....doing all that in a couple of days.  Don't do anything silly and push it beyond what the PT is advising.  :P har!   [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]spyder

Are you kiddin me dude ?  Ridin the scooter is heaven compared to what the PT lady puts me through. 110 lbs of pure torture machine. Yesterday she had me on my stomach with my knee cranked up behind my back tryin to see if she could stick my foot up my ass I swear. I yelled Uncle five times, but it didn't phase her a bit.

All good news, Brian... glad to hear it!  Ride safe! :)
So, PT Lady finally accomplished what she was trying to do?  I've had OTHER people's feet up my ass, but never my own.  ;D  How was it? [smiley=nixweiss.gif]
