'00 SERG Headlamp Cover Trim
« on: April 11, 2012, 02:22:25 PM »

Had the outer fairing off the triple red to upgrade speakers. Thought "what the heck, I'll disassemble the headlights unit for a thorough cleaning". Everything pretty straighforward & simple, just a lot of plastic.  Went to reinstall the headlamp cover & discovered I had no headlamp cover trim, never have had, didn't know it existed untill I bothered to look in the parts manual & saw part # 58711-98 (3ea).  My cover has a piece of two-sided tape @ the bottom, has always stayed in place, no problems.  So,  Question:  What do these trim pieces do?  Do I really need them?  Something I can fabricate easily?  See item # 18 in photo below.

It's just a flexible, rubber weather strip type of material.  What it's purpose is, I'm not exactly sure, as it sure as heck doesn't keep moisture out from behind the headlight cover.  Probably serves more of an anti-rattle function than anything else. :nixweiss:

Your right Brian i think it just makes the cover fit tighter.

Thanks guys.  Sounds like something I'll enjoy making out of clear surgical tubing next time the cover is off.  The factory stuff (three pieces) doesn't go all the way around does it?

They resemble black plastic door edge guards, like you just read, probably an anti rattle feature.

Mine's not here to look at right now, but believe it's one on each side and a longer piece across the top.

You could do it with clear material, but stock, it's black.

A few of us changed that cover out for the black headlight bezel used on the 09 SERG  :) it is a much nicer look IMO and I believe its under $ 15  :2vrolijk_21:  and it fits nicely into the same holes used for the cover.

Still hibernating at my dad's place.

I wish 120Rs came in silver, though!

Are the original '00 headlight lens (not the cover) strong enough to stand up to rocks, rain, debris, etc. without damage?  They seem to be plastic, not glass like a regular headlight.

Yes they are only plastic but I figure if a stone hits it I will just replace it with the lights from an 09  :nixweiss: Touch wood ... I've been running with them like this for two years now without any problems  :2vrolijk_21: and the lenses are still clear :coolblue:

Same here, no lens and the new insert. Looks sharp IMHO. Never had a problem.
