5 Gallon Fuel Tank on SEs
« on: July 28, 2006, 01:46:39 AM »

5 gallon Fuel Tank

Will the 2007  5 gallon fuel tank fit on both 2005 and 2006 CVO V-Rod SEs?
If so, what's the Harley Part # ?
Is it easy to install?

The new 5 gallon tank increases riding range 35%
(3.7 --> 5.0 gallons, 100 --> 135 miles)

I was at the dealer a few days ago and asked the same question. The frame on the 07's is different to support the 5 gallon tank. So as of right now (from what I was told) NO it will not work.

For those interested in larger gas tank for V-Rod I read in July '06 issue of Thunder Press about an aftermarket company that has a 5.1 gallon tank available.

Only minor modifications on the protection plate located underneath the tank are required for installation and the unit comes with pictorial instructions to accomplish this. There are two models available (one for bikes with tires up to 280mm and one for 300 series) and although they are priced the same, neither one is exactly inexpensive. Retailing at the odd figure of $1,076.51, it will cost you an additional $135 to have it shipped across the big water from Europe.

For those interested check Rick's Motorcycles

Let me tell you guys - rented a V-Rod from Eagle Riders while in San Diego and we took off over the mountains and into the dessert.

Was sweating bullets as fuel was VERY low and there are not many gas stations out there on the back roads in the desert...  [smiley=nervous.gif]

1,000.00 is alot - but get a 10-15 % discount then consider the small volume they are most likely selling plus the enginerring, etc. - its' not that bad of a deal... :)

I'm hoping that maybe somebody over here (in US) will come up with something in the next year or so, especially since the 07's have the larger tank now.

I wouldn't mind the 5 gal fuel tank, however I found I was always about ready for a break when I needed gas.

Greg,
I was watching the Vrod forums web site in June when this started. It looks like a good product and the price isn't too bad, much better then the european one for $1K. I'm not planning on selling my V so I'm going to keep an eye on the site and maybe order one in late January or Febuary. I do hate the idea of having to grind/file anything that's painted. [smiley=nervous.gif] But it could be worth it. It also depends on how fast I can save money for an Ultra. ;)

Ed [smiley=pepper.gif]

I with you on that>> Let's hope someone we know buys one first>>> Then we can get the scoop on the grinding that's necessary.. I guess I wouldn't mind if it were out of site at the bottom of the bike. Can you give me a heads up onthe Windvest Windshiels???

Call me crazy, but I am fine with stopping for fuel every 100 miles on this bike...now on the touring bike, noooooo....

I might be saying a different tune if I had the time and money...

Go figure!

I know the guy that had the proto tank made on V-RodForums and have seen it installed on his own personal V-Rod.It's 5 gallons and fits and looks good. The ign switch and seat release have to be relocated.Last I talked w him he was working on getting a Co.to manufacture less than 15k harnesses for the ign relocation. The switch is replaced and will mount up front like the new models.I don't remember the details on the seat release. The holdup is w liability issues,he has a Lawyer that handles his affairs. It shouldn't be to much longer.

Now there are two tanks available. Both are on 1130cc.com (formerly v-rod forums) One requires a lot more modification than the other.

I have the one from Unlimited Engineering on it's way.  They just made some changes to the mold which allow for slightly more capacity.  It's a much more complete kit with more details covered (such as the included heat shield for the rear of the tank instead of having to peel and glue your original one as Rick's does).  Also it's only $350, and it's made in the USA!  Only early frames ('02, '03) should need any grinding, and that's just to remove some weld splatter on the inside of the frame.

Steve...I've been loosely keeping up with this tank on the Vrod forum, but haven't read much about it in the last month or two.  It's good to hear the guy got the new mold.  I have the same bike as you, so will be very interested in hearing about your installation process.  Please include some pics, and let me know how difficult it is and what had to be moved or modified to make it fit.  I did not care much about it at first glance because of the grinding painted surfaces issues, but I understand our current frames are a lot cleaner in that regard.

On a side note...what kind of pipe are you running on yours?  I'm looking hard at the new V&H 2 into 1, but it's not released yet.  It's the only one I've seen that I really have taken a liking to.

I've got an '04 V-Rod.  Wouldn't this replacement tank question depend on whether you've got the original tire width or the wide tire?  Did the introduction of the wide tire on the V-Rods create the opportunity for the 5-gallon tanks?

Phaze...my understanding is that this tank will fit all models other than the 07's and one other (maybe the R model?).  Here's a link to their site:

http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/cgi-bin/store/2020.html?id=Ass5aNaY

Steve must be getting in on a group buy, as the price they have listed is higher than he quotes above.

I had this debate when I had my Screamin Eagle V-Rod. On one hand I was not comfortable with riding that bike any further than the gas tank would accomodate. But, every where you go from San Diego is desert, so it becomes an issue of do you find a gas station when you need one. One thing I liked was the feature showing how many miles you had left with the gas in your tank That was cool

This isn't high on my list either, B B...I don't use the bike for going long distances, and around here, finding gas isn't a big issue.  The bike is comfortable enough for me, I just don't use it that way.  Mine is sucking gas since I put the PCIII on....'course, that could have something to do with the way I'm riding it now too :2vrolijk_21:

Don't have a V-Rod and have only ridden one a few times.  Longest stretch only a little over an hour.  So can't speak to how it might wear on you over a longer day.  For the thousand dollars or much more that had previously heard suggested for prices on larger tanks for them I'd have to think twice (or three or four times) about doing the deed.  But for the $350 range mentioned above here how can it be anything other than a no-brainer?

Whether you intend to ride 90 miles or less on a stretch or not sometimes the option just isn't ours.  A station might be closed.  Might be out in the boonies having a good day and not realize how deep in the boonies you'd gotten.  More fuel just can't ever be a wrong choice.

Honestly, Don, for a person my size or slightly taller, I think I could ride on the V all day long, particularly if cruise could be fitted.  It's a smooth running bike and could run 75-80 and 5K all day long.  But the thumb screw works for the interstate when I need to rest my hand a minute or two.  The prices on these retrofit tanks is really dropping, and the guy now has the ability to make them cheaply once he got the original kinks worked out.  It is something I might do over the winter or when it comes time to change the rear tire out on mine, as all that comes off anyway from the instructions I've seen with the kit.  1/2 day job and only need one special tool to get the tank collar off the old tank to put on the new...on the Vrod forum, people are swapping the tool, or renting it.  5 gallons is always better to have than 3.7....that would make it a good pee break interval.  I'll make the 300 or so mile run to Traxxion in a couple of weeks, so will know better then.

Sometimes it takes a whole tankful of fuel before you can think straight.

Sure a larger tank would be nice...however for me on that bike, it works and I have little problem with it outside of the availability of fuel when required.  Just more cautious I guess.

From the short hop on yours I took and the other two bikes I'd ridden somewhat longer it was immediately apparent that the only thing the bike needed to be plenty comfortable for longer rides was your windshield. The other two I'd been on for stretches of an hour or a bit more didn't have the big screen like yours.  With yours it was a night and day difference.  No doubt it helped on yours that your peg and bar positions were just about perfect for me too.  But, assuming the seat didn't start barking on longer runs, I'd hate to be limited on your bike to 90 mile runs (give or take).
