Greg,
I was watching the Vrod forums web site in June when this started. It looks like a good product and the price isn't too bad, much better then the european one for $1K. I'm not planning on selling my V so I'm going to keep an eye on the site and maybe order one in late January or Febuary. I do hate the idea of having to grind/file anything that's painted. [smiley=nervous.gif] But it could be worth it. It also depends on how fast I can save money for an Ultra. ;)

Ed [smiley=pepper.gif]

I with you on that>> Let's hope someone we know buys one first>>> Then we can get the scoop on the grinding that's necessary.. I guess I wouldn't mind if it were out of site at the bottom of the bike. Can you give me a heads up onthe Windvest Windshiels???

Call me crazy, but I am fine with stopping for fuel every 100 miles on this bike...now on the touring bike, noooooo....

I might be saying a different tune if I had the time and money...

Go figure!

I know the guy that had the proto tank made on V-RodForums and have seen it installed on his own personal V-Rod.It's 5 gallons and fits and looks good. The ign switch and seat release have to be relocated.Last I talked w him he was working on getting a Co.to manufacture less than 15k harnesses for the ign relocation. The switch is replaced and will mount up front like the new models.I don't remember the details on the seat release. The holdup is w liability issues,he has a Lawyer that handles his affairs. It shouldn't be to much longer.

Now there are two tanks available. Both are on 1130cc.com (formerly v-rod forums) One requires a lot more modification than the other.

I have the one from Unlimited Engineering on it's way.  They just made some changes to the mold which allow for slightly more capacity.  It's a much more complete kit with more details covered (such as the included heat shield for the rear of the tank instead of having to peel and glue your original one as Rick's does).  Also it's only $350, and it's made in the USA!  Only early frames ('02, '03) should need any grinding, and that's just to remove some weld splatter on the inside of the frame.

Steve...I've been loosely keeping up with this tank on the Vrod forum, but haven't read much about it in the last month or two.  It's good to hear the guy got the new mold.  I have the same bike as you, so will be very interested in hearing about your installation process.  Please include some pics, and let me know how difficult it is and what had to be moved or modified to make it fit.  I did not care much about it at first glance because of the grinding painted surfaces issues, but I understand our current frames are a lot cleaner in that regard.

On a side note...what kind of pipe are you running on yours?  I'm looking hard at the new V&H 2 into 1, but it's not released yet.  It's the only one I've seen that I really have taken a liking to.

I've got an '04 V-Rod.  Wouldn't this replacement tank question depend on whether you've got the original tire width or the wide tire?  Did the introduction of the wide tire on the V-Rods create the opportunity for the 5-gallon tanks?

Phaze...my understanding is that this tank will fit all models other than the 07's and one other (maybe the R model?).  Here's a link to their site:

Steve must be getting in on a group buy, as the price they have listed is higher than he quotes above.

I had this debate when I had my Screamin Eagle V-Rod. On one hand I was not comfortable with riding that bike any further than the gas tank would accomodate. But, every where you go from San Diego is desert, so it becomes an issue of do you find a gas station when you need one. One thing I liked was the feature showing how many miles you had left with the gas in your tank That was cool

This isn't high on my list either, B B...I don't use the bike for going long distances, and around here, finding gas isn't a big issue.  The bike is comfortable enough for me, I just don't use it that way.  Mine is sucking gas since I put the PCIII on....'course, that could have something to do with the way I'm riding it now too :2vrolijk_21:
