Dragonfly fairing and fiberglass bags on a Convertible
« on: May 04, 2012, 11:00:27 AM »

I have been thinking of buying hard bags and a batwing fairing for my CVO Softail Convertible. My biggest concern would be finding a paint shop that could match the original. Has anyone ever done this and with what results?

Did you go with a Batwing fairing?  If you did, are you interested in selling the fairing off the Convertible?

I did not do it. I decided that the cost would outweigh the benefit. I am now waiting to see what is going to be in the 2014 CVO lineup. It maybe time to trade. Good luck with your search.

""are you interested in selling the fairing off the Convertible?""

Got a batwing in the paint shop at the present time.   Whenever I get it home and get it mounted,  hooked up and evaluated,  I might have a 2010 fairing for sale.

Cowboybagger,  I tried to send you a email.

Will post some pictures when I get er done.   :)

I bought a Dragonfly fairing for my bike, the dealership was going to install it. They called me to come look at it cause it looked like crap and boy were they right. Good thing I didn't get it painted first. The fairing was 2500.00 with everything on it. Returned it with a twenty percent restocking fee. What a rip-off Dragonfly is. I don't recommend any type of fairing for the convertible.

I will post a picture of my fairing once I get it installed.   If I am happy with the result then I will post the website for the people who made it.    They are made of ABS plastic and are molded to fit the convertibles smaller headlight.

It looked good when I made sure of the fitment, but I want to make sure that it works well before I recommend the product.   They have at least 3 on bikes now.

Hopefully,  I will be posting in a couple of weeks.

I didn't see a fairing that showed a match to the ConV, which one did you choose?

Also, any source for good hard saddlebags? Sadly, I'm leaning more and more towards a touring bike but don't want to lose so much on selling this bike.

I had a Dragonfly fairing & returned it. Unless your 6'5", you can't see over it. I don't think any other fairing would be an different.

Wide Open has a picture of the conV under the softtails, ( it is orange )  If you are interested you will need to contact them for info.

I have one at the painter and will give feedback and pictures when I get it on.

KEEP IN MIND!!!! If you have the "Trip" button on your handlebars you may not be able to relocate your turn signals! mine does not. i had to remove tank, locate turn signal connector, unpin wires from connector an pull wires up out of handlebars, reroute wiring, repin connector, reattach plug, and reinstall tank! took about 2-3 hours. ALSO..... i had to call them to see if they had one for the Convertible as i did not see one on their site either. They have seen mine in person and taken pics of it.... not sure why they do not show it on their site......

Have to tell you....before the pictures, I wasn't sure what to expect.  Have seen the aftermarket batwing on bikes before with mixed results.  Well, I'm now impressed!  It looks really good on the bike and the color matches.  Great addition to your convertible with beautiful results... :2vrolijk_21:

As mentioned earlier,  my faring is getting painted.   I bought it from the same place as ksbowhunters did.   Before I make a recommendation on a product,  if feel that I need to give a trial.  There will be considerable work required to get it mounted, mostly with relocating the turn signals.  I have high expectations.

Here is a link to the gallery of wide open with the Conv.

Thanks to all who like it! Im running the Vance & Hines Pro Pipe. But if i can find the people to buy the kit to install hard bags i may have to change pipes. would like to just extend current pipe to back of bags if possible or just put a down pipe on it so it looks cleaner.... havent decided yet

How do you find the handling difference between the Batwing and Stock Fairing?

I bought my 2010 Conv. while stationed in FT Hood, bike was in Chicago. So i didnt get to test ride it before i bought it. If i would have i wouldnt have bought it! Had it shipped home and put in garage till i got home on R&R which was 4 months. First trip me and the wife took on it was HORRIBLE!! That tiny little fairing did absolutly nothing!! The wind beat us to death! When we got home i was soooooo unhappy with my purchase. i spent next several months while on deployment searching and searching to find a fairing. Found company, called them and bought it! It catches turbulence if following behind other vehicles or of there is a high wind, but no different than a street glide! i have pushed 30-40mph wind gusts with it and have been extremely happy! the wife can ride in back and not be beaten to death, she is verry happy with it too! Hope this helps!

Hey KSBowhunter,

How tall are you? I had one put on and could barely see over the top of the fairing. With the convertible sitting only 23 1/2" from the ground it's more difficult to see over the fairing.

What was the total cost (excluding Paint) and what options did you go for as far as Audio was concerned?

Here is a link to wideopen fairings.    http://www.wideopencustom.com/p-120-harley-davidson-cvo-convertible.aspx

They just got this NEW site up recently and has KSBowhunter's bike in the pictures for the convertible.   The cost is around + or - $1000 with the extras needed and stereo upgrades, plus shipping.

I have mine back from the painters and have just finished installing the stereo and putting it together.   Really pleased with the paint job. Next week I will get it mounted,  getting help with turn signal relocation, and will get to test it out.   If it works as good as it looks I will have a big smile.    :jalapeno:

Will post pictures and comments next week.

2010 & 2011 turn signals are mounted on the mirrors.  2012 are mounted on the fork tubes lower tree.  It should be easy to re-locate.  I was thinking of doing it anyway.  Looks nice.  It's cheaper than retrofitting the stock fairing with the factory amp and speakers and I bet it sounds a lot better too.

What size are the speakers?  It looks like it supports 4 speakers.  Also what radios fit?  Is it a standard 1 DIN opening?  Thanks.

I did some checking and it looks like the speakers are 5.25" and it takes a 1 DIN marine radio.  I bet it sounds nice.  Comments??

I you go to wideopencustom.com it gives you all the options/specs for the audio etc.
Looks good but no amp option! they seem to be running off stereos with integrated amps!

Does it mount on the original quick release mounts?
Is it easy to put on and take off?

Does it mount on the original quick release mounts?

It is suppose to go on mounts as the brackets look the same as original.  My experience (2010) resulted in removing the grommets and mounting with washers to give a little room to adjust.  was tight on headlight pushing it down and causing it not able to adjust higher and was very tight on the cubby hole which I wanted to use instead of the flat cover.

Is it easy to put on and take off?

Not in my install.

By removing the Grommets does that mean the small factory fairing no longer fits?

Yes I believe it's easy to take on and off but once you put it on and ride it one time you won't ever take it off! Mine fits on factory grommets. I did put 1 washer on top mounts to widen out grommets like a 1/16th of an inch just to make initial install easier!
