Bad Karma?
« on: July 31, 2006, 11:13:09 PM »

While an announcement of injuries, accidents or other misfortunes that might befall our friends and members here are often appreciated by the person in question and allows all of us to help keep "in the loop" on the news of such thing; is a special section set aside just for bad news really something we're comfortable doing?  Not meaning to be at all facetious; to me it seems a bit ghoulish.

kind of like reporting the war casualties ea. day on tv.     or, the death announcement column in the local paper.    i know what two lane is saying, but, you're right it is something to deal w/ in some manner, either organized or spontaneous.   spyder

It is a part of the lifestyle that we choose to participate in.  On a side bar, hopefully, we can learn from others mishaps, too. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

The intent of this new forum is to provide a place to have these types of comments on riders mishaps. Its also a great place to discuss issues of safety and things we have learned through our collective years of riding. As JC stated there is something to learn from each others mishaps. Who knows, it may prevent a mishap happening to someone else.

From the recent global announcement about topical issues being policed more heavily I'd assume topics of riding safety, equipment and other gear wouldn't belong here.

One other thing and I'll not mention anything in here again (don't want to focus on it after all).  Any questions or polls or suggestions to the contrary I'm assuming the graveyard section here will stay in place.  It's been posted and heels will be dug in.

Within this topic, however, if anything should ever happen to me; leave me out of it.  I've no intention of any misfortune I might suffer being a constant reminder to my mates.  It would stay in the back of their minds where it should, and where they could learn from it, for all their days.  It would need not be at the forefront of anyone's thought or anyone's continual reminder.

My first thought as to 'bad karma' was that just seeing the topic might serve to remind me to 'ride safe'.
After reading other's comments I guess I agree... might be there too long.  Can a post be erased after, say, a week?

Me too....

Why couldn't there be a "News about Members" topic?  That could include both positive and negative threads...marriages, births, deaths, injuries (riding related or not), birthdays, illnesses...etc, etc.  Not one only about somebody getting hurt.  Just a thought...

What if there are positive things that can be learned from that misfortune. [smiley=nixweiss.gif] I think we are dwelling on the negative and not thinking about the positives that can come out of this. If something were to happen to me, and some lesson was learned to prevent the same thing happening to another rider then I wouldn't want it to be deleted. JMHO Our passion is a dangerous one, and we all know the risks involved. If we can learn something to make us safer/better riders then to me that is a good thing. As always in closing....

So if this type of news and the recovery offend anyone then just find another thread to read!

I just hate crashes but I read about everyone and read every safety column I can find, in 450,000+ mile I've had 3 crashes, could any of them been avoided, the experts say every one can be.

My vote is to keep the thread, pray for our brothers and learn from each other.

certinley an interesting debate going on here. although we may not want to advertise that a memebr has had an acident, putting it into announcments was doing just that, and putting it into othere seems like it was being tucked away

as with all changes to the structure of the site, nothing is set in stone if there's a better way. then we'll change it

What about lightning?

This should bring it close to home for those of us on the Mt Evans loop at Cripple Creek.

When the rider was struck by lightning in Colorado some of us were within just miles of the strike.

The group of us led by AK that went near Denver and then south to Colorado Springs on the 25 were within 6 miles of the stike zone and I would estimate within 10 minutes of zero hour on the day of the strike, June 21st.

Now that is too damn scary!

Most assuredly likewise me.  :o

I thought I could skip over this like I do the racing thing (see don't even know what it is about) the humor - mostly not for girls - I don't mind, just don't visit there, the engine mod stuff I don't understand etc.  But this is so high up and has the Red Cross and all..... And what is the order - alphabetical? or the date created?  Oh well, whatever you people think is relevant to others.   [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

I rarely fit in well here anyway, but if anything happened to me - not my bike - I'd rather be anonymous, thanks.   ;)

Seems that some have developed deep and deepening friendships here and that news, good or bad, often merits sharing. It would be nice, but unrealistic, to think that this topic will never grow. S happens. I'd also think that most of us routinely check for "new" postings and skip those w/ nothing since our last visit. Like the other threads I'll just be skipping this one unless something "new" shows up. As for the constant reminder, I don't think it is a bad thing to scroll past the big red cross. "It's" always out there and a little reminder doesn't offend me at all. After all, don't we generally tell our mates to "ride safe?" My 2 cents.

Hearing about riders who have much more experience than me being involved in mishaps, keeps it in my mind that I need to watch it or I may be next.

Having been a mishap, incident, accident, catastrophe or whatever other adjective you would like to place on my near death experience.   I think this forum is a good thing and serves a purpose.

Normally when I travel for work I find myself away for a week or 2 or like the last 2 1/2 months where I have been preoccupied by life / rehab, this forum allows me to see and know whats transpired in my absence, and  to know who to send a message to or to ask if someone needs something etc.   While it may seem a bit morbid, it also serves a purpose.  In my case it helps me to find information more consistently vs. just missing a post where information was buried or in a forum I dont frequent as often.

It also allows me to add information as needed or reply vs. starting more threads.  It can also be good therapy to share what you want about X incident.

I have added this topic to one of the ones I check, as I feel the prayers and good wishes really help those that need em.  Personal experience is the best teacher :)

Keep the shiny side up and wear the LID,  ^^^^^^^^^^ see above

Remember this. Not one of us gets up in the morning knowing something bad is going to happen when we leave our house. If we did then we wouldn't go out at that time. Not a day goes by when my wife of 38 years is riding behind me I don't think of the consequences of making a bad decesion or a cage making one resulting in both of us suffering the mistake. When riding we all give a wave to another rider in passing (sort of makes us all brothers and sisters) without caring who just passed us. This forum topic is about carring about all of you although I will never meet any of you It gives me the oppurtunity to comment and express my good wishes to a family or rider. I feel that if this topic offends one of us then just don't read it. In any case I care about all of you and ride safe.

Reading, seeing or hearing about accidents keeps me a little more focused on what I'm doing. I have to remind myself to slow down all the time. These posts help alot. I been riding the last 35 years and really want to ride another 20+.

Whats good here is you don't have to read the link if you don't want to. I don't read the Market Place links cause I keep buyin stuff.
