5 speed shifter seal on tranny
« on: May 20, 2012, 02:01:33 PM »

I found the leak on my tranny on my 06 ultra.  Its coming from my shifter seal.  I have been looking up and can't really find anything out on replacing it.  Figured i can just try and pry it out of there and replace it but didn't want to tear any other stuff up.  Any suggestions on an easy way to get it out and replace it and what i need to look for?  I already have the inner and outer primary off and the washer a clip.

I got it just drilled a couple holes in the old one and it came right out.  Now just trying to decide since none of the other seals are leaking if i should leave them alone or replace them while i am in there.

You're doing fine.  Wedge it out and tap a new one in.  Cometic makes a seal that I've found to be preferable to the stock seal from Harley.  But if you've already got the stock part in hand it can be hard to wait for new parts to show up in the mail....

The shift shaft seal is definitely the one that is most prone to leaking.

Harley's new seal is double lipped like Cometic's. I would not hesitate to use it if you do not want to wait.
To remove use 2 #4 or #6 screws and drive them into the old seal and pull

Be sure to apply some tape over the spline before sliding the new seal on. Splines sharp edges will destroy the deal lip very easily. Don't ask me how I know this. twinotter  FWIW  ;D
