Soft bags for CVO Screemin' Eagle Fatboy with 200
« on: August 09, 2006, 12:02:26 AM »

Hi, I'm new to this thread, and just picked up a blue/yellow '06 CVO Screemin' Eagle Fatboy last week. I'm enjoying it big time, but need a few more things to get comfortable. I've ordered a a heal-toe shifter ('cause that's the way I always set up) and a Corbin Gunfighter seat with backrest (my back needs it, looks good, and I had one I liked on a Nomad years ago), but I still need some way to carry stuff. I'm not paying $3k for the Corbin hard bags, but I would like some usable soft bags. Does anything good lookin' work with the 200 rear tire and shotgun exhaust? (searched the site but I didn't see much...) Thanks! Matt
P.S. I have an '04 Goldwing for long rides and serious baggin'....

I'll be the second, WELCOME Matt, and congrats on the bike!

If you go back a few pages on the Fat Boy topics you will find some discussions on bags.
Here is one that shows a couple of detachable options.

Purple Haze...

get off this color thing already.   You really need to let go of this purple is better chit.  And I truly did not appreciate the private message you sent me telling me to Jack off!    I have not been rude here to anyone and it seems you always want to bring up the bike color issues...

One person said something nasty to you, but do not take it out on us with the other colors...

Hi Everybody, thanks for the info! Eagle1, I like the way your bike is set up. I ordered the gunfighter myself, and to me, it looks right on the CVO FatBoy. Your bags are just right too, but I don't yet know if I can track down something like them. Detachable is good, but I'm always carrying something.

I love the paint and brushed clearcoat on this bike! Like it better than any other factory paint job I've seen. I'm red-green color-blind though. Sometimes the difference between blue, and a blue with red in it (such as purple) is too subtle. It's all some kinda blue to me! I respond to the beauty of it--I just don't quite see it the same as folks who have full color vision.

A Harley sales guy just told me that they're doing more 200 tires for '07, so there should be more bags coming....

Thanx

Matt

I too needed a way to carry things on my bike, but did not need to all the time.  So after looking around for saddle bags that could easily be removed, and searching forums for information, I purchased a set of Boss Bags.  The reason I choose their bags over others was their reputation and their mounting system.  When the bags are removed there are just two pins left on each side of the bike.  Perfect for anyone not needing the bags 100% of the time.

Boss Bags is a great company to deal with and their products are top notch.  Their bags come with everything you need to install them, including an allen wrench and a thing of loctite.  Installation is very easy and once done you can put on or take off the bags in about 5 seconds each.  I now know why there mounting system is patented, it is that good.

Not sure if they make a set that does not have the quick release mounting, but either way I would highly recommend them.  I liked their bags so much I even bought the matching trunk bag to put on my luggage rack for even more storage when I travel on the bike.  I will try to get some photos put up here of my bike with and without the bags installed so you can see what they will look like on your bike.

Cool! Boss Bags look like their 34LB model should fit. I've got the stock pipes, and they're higher than most of the pipes pictured on bikes on this site.

I like the bags on txfatboy's bike. Who made those? They kind of look like the Boss Bags, but they're cleaner than the 34's pictured on the Boss Bags site (no center logo, different clasps).

I put a tinted, compact windshield on mine--enough to break the wind, but not look ovesized. Not sure if I outsmarted myself. I'm 6'4", and this windshield gets the blast off my chest, but does nothing for my head.

The bags I have are Harley bags purchased in 2001.  They are from my previous fatboy.  Not sure if they are still offering those bags or not.

Just got back from Sturgis.   Some great riding.

Here are some pix of my bags which I've had for about 5 months now and feel they are the best thing since sliced bread.
They are boss bags and look great on and off the bike.   They disconnect in seconds.

I also put on some small front lights and guess I didn't realize how unique they were until I got so many comments
from people out at Sturgis.   I installed them low on my forks.

Everything you need comes with the bags when purchased.   They do use barebacks (which are special to the boss bags) and you can buy covers for the barebacks which look great when the bags are off.

But other than the bareback covers, all else is included.   Just make sure you tell them that you have the '06 Screamin' Eagle Fat Boy when ordering.

I still haven't gone forward with the soft bags, but here's new photos of my bike with a compact tinted windshield, a Corbin Gunfighter seat, and (not shown) a heal-toe shifter. I've attached a couple of pictures.

The seat is great! Fits me like a glove, and the backrest really helps. The seat peg socket on the stock seat is to the rear-most position, but the Corbin wants the middle position. The middle position is already pre-drilled by Harley, but does not have a threaded socket. I got a spare threaded socket from Harley, and thought I'd have to remove the rear fender to get it in the hole. Turns out, it was easy to tape the socket to a wire coat hanger, snake it up, and pop it into place....

I am much happier with the heal-toe shifter. Smoother shifts, and easier to find neutral.

Aussie_FLSTFSE--Thanks for resizing that!

Aha! I see that I posted a big pixel monster. Will go for the 640 x 480 range next time....

Yup, the Corbin seat feels much more comfortable than the stock version, and the backrest gives great support. Keeps me on the bike when I punch it too! I've very happy with it. I'm especially happy with the heel-toe shifter too. Maybe it's just because I'm used to them, but I can shift much faster and cleaner, and it's way easier to find neutral.

OK, here's an attempt at a rear view that shows the seat, shifter, and windshield....

Yeah. mwwmwwx is an old legacy username that I grabbed quick just to get on the site. I just changed it to California FatBoy. Just quit my job, so I finally have some time to take care of stuff like this. Hope to tour the SouthWest USA and do some photography next week, but that's a job for my Goldwing as the FatBoy is not broken in yet (and I carry tons of stuff!).

Hey Now,

Nice bags, I have had my eye on the Boss Bags for a while.  In the pics you included it looks like you also have a "docking" type mount in the rear part of the fender strut, just in front of the blinker.  If so, is this for a detachable sissy bar??

I want to attach a detachable sissy bar, and I wanted to make sure it would work with the Boss Bag docking hardware. They have a nice picture on there website illustrating what I would like to do:

http://www.bossbags.com/images/seagle06lg.jpg

It looks like the harley sissy bar and accessories in the pic, just not sure about the mount.  Great looking bike by the way!!

hey Now,

Awesome pic, and thx for the response.  One more follow-up question...

Did you need to install a kit to move the directionals due to the sissy bar??  The guys at my harley dealer told me I would need to with their sissy bar detachable mount.

Thanks in advance.

NCDOC,

Ya know, I'm not sure.   I had the sissy bar/etc put on prior to picking up the bike and now I can't remember if they had to
move the lights or not.

Yeah, that looks like the relocation kit HD recommended for placing the detachable sissy bar.  I have read about some people grinding back the posterior portion of the sissy bar frame to fit with the stock turn signal stalks.

I bought and put on the Boss Bags and the HD quick release sissy bar and can confirm you do need the signal relocation kit.

Awesome info, I was wondering if I would have to remove the fender support.  It sounds like one side at a time might be the easiest way.  I havent gotten the kit yet.  Do the wires for the directionals have a quick release or plug or do they need to be cut when the fender support is removed?

The directional wires do have a quick release, which is inside the tail light.  However, the plug has to be cut off anyway to feed the wires through the new directional support supplied in the relocaton kit.  And it is a tight fit, even with the liquid soap they suggest using.  But by removing the fender support from the bike you can work on it while sitting comfortabley at a table and just take your time with it.  I also chose to solder the wires back together and use waterproof heatshrink, the kind with the goo that comes out the ends when used that seals around the wires.  But the crimp connectors supplied with the kit will work fine, I just feel solder is more reliable long term so choose to use it instead.

I noticed a couple of bikes in here with the headlight nacelle kit, gives it the look of a road king.  I like it and want one on my cobalt and yellow SEFTBY.  However the local Harley Dealer says it wont fit.  Any suggestions???? :)

Hey Eagle, I had been looking at the Boss Bags on line for a week or so but I have never actually seen one.  I have an 07 SERK which has the small useless bags and have been trying to decide whether to get hard bags or order a set of larger leather ones.  I would assume from your post that you are happy with them. Any  comments or tips about the bags? Quality? Service? They look great on your bike but your slide show was going so fast I couldn't get a good look at them.  ;D Which size did you order and do you know the actual measurements of them? Good luck and tia, jj

twojay, yes, very happy withe bags and the mounting system, they are on and off in 5 sec. flat, locks included, very nice fit and finish, just top notch bags in every respect, and super simple to install, "even a caveman could do it"  ??? ;D  and as for most well designed products their price is not for the weak of heart, but I believe they are worth 100 times their weigh in beer, and as a matter of fact their bag numbering system is based on how many cans of beer they can hold, so I got the "36"S1 which can hold 36 cans EACH!!!!!
that should get me through the night Aye ;)  :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink: oh and you were right the pics were cruzin by pretty quick so I slowed down a bit.

Good Luck

Eagle1, Thanks for the info on the quality of the bags. As I have a serk, I won't be able to use their mounting system but their web site states they now make bags for touring bikes. They do not have any pics posted of the inner side of bag which would require an inset for our shocks but guess they know that.  I was aware they measured their bags based on the cans they hold which is why I was asking about actual measurements. If you don't know, no problem because I need to call them anyway. Is that 36 cans with or without ice?? Have fun emptying your bags and thanks again, JJ.
