D80 was in (what I thought was a good padded compact bag) it rolled off the couch onto a carpeted floor. Picked it up and loaded the bike with the other crap we didn't need. Took it out of bag when we arrived lens came off in my hand. Two of the three plastic bayonet mounting tabs were in the camera bag.
My local Nikon Authorized service dealer (which sends lens to Nikon for repair) says it will cost about $150.00 to repair. I think there are some YouTube video to do your own repair, new parts are around $15.00 or less. I think there are nine small screws.
Has anyone repaired there lens?
Where is the best place to buy the new part?
Comments, suggestions! Thanks

Thanks Don. We were keeping the newest grandbaby Sat. and I found that same video while doing more research on the lens repair. That was a pretty good "how to" so I ordered the new part Saturday, it was only $15.00 with shipping. I figured what can it hurt, my lens is already broken so I can't screw it up much more.
Have you repaired one? Seems like the hardest part will be to find a small enough screwdriver.

No I haven't fixed one YET!

I have two Nikon lenses and that grabbed my interest.

Small tungsten type screwdriver set and lighted reading glasses from the Drugstore.

Well if your Nikon lenses have the plastic mount be careful. Seemed like mine broke very easily. Just rolled off the couch while in a camera bag. :nixweiss:
I couldn't see paying Nikon $150.00 or more for that repair.

You can buy a set of small Jewelers type screwdrivers that have various phillips and flat in the same box.  I've had mine for years and years, so can't remember where I got them.  They are handy to have around for working on eyeglass frames and other small items.  Durable too.

Those plastic mounted lenses are prone to break with a blow at the right angle.  Many of them are sharp lenses that come in the "kits"...that's just a weak link.

I have had to repair my 18-200 lens twice now. Two different problems, latest was all the screws backed out in the front of the lens, behind the filter - and it jammed the filter!
If you have one of these 18-200's I would suggest looking under the gasket where the filter would seat.

And you need a quality set of tiny screwdrivers, no HF stuff here.

As to the Jewellers screwdrivers, go to a Jewellery supply company, you will find them on the web or in your local city jewellery sections, and they cost very little...the lenses are not too hard to repair yourself...just remember...gently and logically....there are also jewellers magnified glasses that fit like a welding hat....very handy for close work....hope this helps...j

Well the new bayonet mount arrived last week and I already had some tiny screwdrivers that I thought would work and they did. So tonight I tackled the job. On the first reassembly attempt I did not have the little piece with the long rod exactly right so after a do over got the lever piece fitting correctly and the lens is working perfectly. I have less than $15.00 in the repair. The biggest problem I had was due to my poor up close small item vision. Even with glasses and extra light those screws are tiny. Plus I really did not know what I was doing, thankfully it was not that complicated. So if you have a broken mount order you a part and fix it. Saved at least $160.00 over a Nikon repair.
