Metal Dragon's Road Glide Custom
« on: October 14, 2012, 01:49:55 AM »

Over the past few years I have been collecting parts for a custom bike build. I decided on a Road Glide for the build with a 09+ Bagger frame from Rolling Thunder. A Fat Baggers drop seat kit was added to complete the frame. For the engine I did a 113" using HD cases, flywheels, Bigger Bore 4.060" cylinders and pistons. Flywheels were balanced, welded, and trued. For the cam I wanted a great torque cam that carried through the RPM range. I choose a T-man TR625 as we have had great luck with this cam in the past. The new 110" heads came from Sadunbar. I then had Hannan's Machine work them doing a full port and polish and redoing the combustion chamber to match the pistons and cams. Valves were replaced with 2.125" intake and 1.63" exhaust. Throttle body is a HPI 55-58 with 5.3g injectors.  Exhaust is a Fullsac "C" x-pipe with 2.25" cores in CVO cans. Primary drive is a Rivera open belt with a Pro-clutch. Transmission is stock HD with a 30T pulley. Swingarm was modified to use the stock belt. Body parts are mostly HD with the exception of the tank and side covers. Front end is OEM with Progressive Monotubes, rear shocks are from Suspension Technologies. 2010 SESG Wheels were purchased from a site member. Gauges are from Medallion instruments. All wiring harnesses and electronics are OEM. For the stereo I used a OEM HK head unit that feeds 600 watts of Hawg-Wired amps to the six speaker system. 6.5" ZX speakers in the fairing and lowers, GTK series tweeter behing the fairing grilles, prototype 5x7" ZX series speakers in the bag lids.

The engine has been tuned to 4500rpm so far, just for the hell of it we did one full throttle pull when we were done and it made 131hp and 130tq
I have about 250 miles on the break in and need to finish the tune soon, I expect to get 135+ out of it..I will post the results soon.

I was pretty lazy with the camera during the process but here is the finished product.

Very nice, just curious how much noise that particular open primary drive makes?

Swwwwwwwweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!!!!! As much as I am a chromeaholic if I could own two bikes one would be just like that. The flat black with the subtle hints of red remind me of the ole skool hot rod look. :2vrolijk_21:

You didn't say.... You going to keep it (be one hell of a shop bike) or is it for sale? Damn I need to win the Lottery if it's for sale. ;D And... oh yeah... I'd bet you would be able to get (or more than) what somebody is asking for their 001/900 "Annie" FLTRXSE2. :D :D

That and a fly-ride bike... hell... I wouldn't have to think long or hard if that was an option to come ride on the left coast. ;D But then I'd want to buy it. :nervous:

Very nice, just curious how much noise that particular open primary drive makes?

At idle in nuetral the clutch discs clatter quite a bit, it sounds like a Ducati. Pull the clutch in and it quiets down. Going down the road you can hear a bit of whine from the belt but thats about it.

The stereo does a good job of drowning it out though ;D

Thanks Gary,
Originally built it for a shop bike but the more i ride it the more i like it. The 05 SEEG may become the shop bike
Then again if someone were to offer me the right $'s i'd sell it and start over again. (I turned down a 30K cash offer last week.)

SWEEEETTTT Jim, you are a perfectionist and it comes through on this build. Little touches stand out and that bike should win some of those dust collector thingies that sit on the shelf (trophies). Love it.

Very nice- I love the denim black glides.

You should throw on some red spark plug wires- just a little thing, but all the red accents look cool.

If you happen to be viewing from work a lot of company's/corporation's block embedded images when using their computers... that may be what is happening in your case. :nixweiss:

I thought that might be the case. Most of the pics I can see, just happens sometimes! I really wanted to see the drop seat.

Here are some more pics of the seating area. Note that I had the seat built up a bit to follow the lines on the tank better.

Very Strong, still need to get it tuned to redline. It pulls very well in any gear. I will post dyno results when completed.

This cool bike is on fire.

Jim's bike rides as nice as it looks.  The engine is amazingly quiet and smooth. The open-belt primary makes some noise until it is in gear but the engine quietly purrs. The exhaust has a powerful deep bass thumping sound, pleasant not annoying.

The transmission shifts smoothly and quietly into gear.  At first I thought I missed the gear. No forcing and clunking like the stock Harley tranny.  The bars are higher and closer together and causes you to sit very upright in the seat. But you know you're on top of a Road Glide when you ride it and take a few turns.

While riding I was being extremely cautious and taking it easy I think because of how smooth the engine is. (Plus it's not mine) Unlike my bike, you can't recognize the power of Jim's bike by the vibration of the engine through the seat of your pants. You feel the power of this bike in your arms and shoulders when you work the throttle.  This bike recognizes throttle and wants to take your ass forward leaving your upper body behind. Hold onto the bars for throttling more power under 50mph. It is quick. (Didn't get above that because of location.)

Sadly I only rode through the neighborhood because it was rush hour and Jim was gracious enough to let me try it out. I felt bad because a street I turned down was a terrible pot-holed, sewer repaired patch of nastiness.  The bike easily maneuvered around the worst spots and cornered well.

The stereo is another master of power and clarity.

Oh to split the traffic lanes with the pipes thumping, the stereo blasting, and powering away like a rocket when the light says "GO!".

Man was I grinning when I pulled back into the shop.

Nice ride Jim.  I want my bike to be close to that when it grows up.

After a little coordination with Jim this week I was able to hook up with some friends I haven't saw for awhile....Don & Carol, Andy & Sherry and Jim....and we got some pics of Jim's new bike.

Don & Carol got the $1.98 test ride in the twin turbo diesel.  Don's comment:  "I'm just really impressed with how fast this thing is".  Carol's comment:  "it's the big white truck with a crazy driver". :huepfenlol2:

Don, Carol and I left Andy & Sherry's and hooked up with Jim on I-880 at a pre-determined location and we all headed for the old NAS Base at Alameda.  Waiting for the sun to drop....what photographers call "the golden hour", Don and I both just started shooting photos.  Jim brought his Nikon also.  I imagine between the three of us there was probably over a thousand photos taken today.  Here are some of those that I took....

The aircraft carrier is the USS Hornet...

Hand painted....

You can see the skyline of San Francisco in the background, across the bay....

This photo belongs on the cover of one of the bike magazines.....one of my favorite photos from today....

Nice pictures JCZ. Some of them almost look photoshopped the way the bike pops out of the pic. Seems to me you may have used a flash of some lighting on a few of them. Very impressive. Jock's photo lessons must be worth the beer money.

Jim - I really like the neat wiring job you did under the seat and around the battery area. Some shops leave a rat's nest under the seat just because it's not exposed. Nice attention to detail.

No, same camera and built in flash that I've always used.  Spent a couple hours with a photographer recently....he showed me things with my camera that I didn't even know it would do.  It begins with taking it off of "automatic". ;D

Being a solid one color bike without any chrome or gloss I can tell you it was defnately the hardest bike to capture that I've ever done.  You don't see the literally hundreds of photos that got deleated.  Just a really hard bike to shoot....I think Don and Jim will agree, too.

Sure am looking forward to some of their photos from yesterday. :2vrolijk_21:

Damn Chip...not just gray but looking pretty thin too ... ;D. sorry but a move isn't happening and I doubt it would help with the color or the thinning :huepfenjump3:

And yes a flat black helmet is coming as soon as I find a N103 or N104 on closeout....

I'm definitely going to have to read more.

I'm also using my iPhoto editor because of a few exposure issues. Hope that's not cheating.  :nixweiss:

Haven't had a passenger on it yet. No rear seat or pegs. I have the 05 SEEG for that. I'm sure the motor wouldn't be phased at all with a passenger though  ;D

Just wondering, I try and keep mine around 3k two up with the 31t. Looks like that motor is strong there!

For those that subscribe to American Bagger Magazine you'll see these photos in a six page spread in the August 2013 issue that just hit the news stand.  Congratulations Jim.....that bike was deserving! :2vrolijk_21:

Terrie and I spent the weekend in the bay area with Andy & Sherry, Don & Carol, Steve & Yolanda and Jim.  Had a great time and was great to be able to spend some time with our friends again.

Jim offered but I passed on it.  Don't want to wake the sleeping tiger.

That's Jim riding, I took the photos.
