Front Speaker replacements
« on: August 08, 2004, 07:11:13 AM »

Has anyone replaced the front speakers yet? If so, what speaker did you buy? Was there a clear differnce between the speakers? I find that the stock speakers work fine until you start to crank out the volume.

I replaced the HD speakers on the Ultra I used to own with Polks. You can get them at Circuit City. http://www.circuitcity.com/detail.jsp?c=1&b=g&u=c&catoid=-8868&qp=0&oid=73869&m=0  They are 4 ohm speakers and are bolt in replacements.  Click here for a side by side comparison of the HD vs. Polks.  http://www.picturetrail.com/gallery/view?p=999&gid=4747989&uid=467647

I haven't changed the speakers in my SEEG... yet :)

The purpose of my inquiry was two fold.
1--- I wanted to see if anyone had replaced the factory speakers. If so, did this mod make a difference in carity and low end bass response.
2--- What speaker did they use and would they recommend it.

The factory stereo is good, but I think the weak link are the speakers. Althought this system is better then most it can still be improved upon.

MoChrome
Thanks for the info. Great slide show. Since you seem the be the only one that has done anything like this. Is there anything to be gained by changing the speakers?

I changed all four speakers on my 03 Ultra to Polks and it made a huge difference (ask any of the guys who were behind me last year during our 1-1/2 week trip). One downside of changing the Ultra speakers is that those HD units use 8-ohm speakers and the Polks are 4 ohm. With that there is a risk of overheating the amp and causing it to fail unless additional resistors are added.

The SEEG sound system is different than any other HD system and among other things uses 4-ohm speakers.  While I am in no way an audio systems expert, I can't imagine there would be any reason the Polks would not work properly right out of the box since they are also 4 ohm.  While the SEEG system sounds pretty darn good I too think a new set of speakers would make it even better.

I agree with Mochrome. The factory speakers are pretty darn good but they could be better so I ordered the Polk speakers from Circuit City.  They were 89 Bucks and they came in yesterday. Super fast shipping. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

My second passion to riding is music. I truly spend way too much money on stereo equipment. I find the original HD SEEG stereo unlistenable. Then again maybe I am expecting too much in an open air environment. Today I am having my 1K service done so I have brought in a pair of Boston Acoustic 5.25

billt1, I look forward to seeing what your critical ear thinks of the Boston Acoustics.  I put Polks in my '02 Electra Glide.  They were better than stock, but not that much, IMHO.  Be sure to let us know what model BA's you went with.  Also, are they water resistant?

I hope no one else bought the Polk speakers. I appologize. I hooked them up and they sounded great in the garage with the bike running but on the highway there is very little improvement over the factory speakers. [smiley=oops.gif]
