T-Man CVO 110" Signature Thumper Series Kit
« on: December 05, 2012, 05:36:48 PM »

6 months was long enough to leave it stock. :2vrolijk_21:  Never done more than cams, air cleaner and exhaust to one before, so this should be an interesting and fun experience. ::)  Got started talking about just cams and one thing led to another and now T-Man is going to have his way with the motor in the '12 SEUC.

That's the one I'm a little concerned about.  But T-Man and the builder say not to worry! :)

T-Man does great work! I am sure you will be very pleased with the result. I know you have the SE ventilator already on the bike, but, you do need a different backing plate to work with the SE 58mm TB.

Just remember compression brings heat!  Might consider upgrading your oil cooler - I installed a Jagg 10 row - dropped my oil temps be about 20 degrees.

You're going to love those cams!  Lot's of good stuff going in there.  Both for performance and reliability.  I'll be watching for your updates!   :2vrolijk_21:

Thanks, Scott!  Performance without sacrificing reliability was the goal. I understand the oil pump can help some with temps, but that was my concern with the compression, along with overall longevity.  I'll keep an eye on things and definitely upgrade the cooler, if needed.

Brian are you going to upgrade that starter to the High Output or change the ring gear and pinion?   At 11.5 to 1 even with the compression releases its going to be something to watch.    Hope it turns out well for you.

Not to start with (no pun intended)!  I'm sure something will rear its ugly head as the weak link.  Could be the starter!

Thanks, Jeff.  You just don't hear any negative comments about T-Man.  That's why I'm trusting what he says about the comp. ratio.  Time will tell.

Just my .02 and nothing else. While its all apart and all that cash is flying, bore the cases and go 117", drop the compression to 10.5.
This small detour in the game plan will bump your TQ numbers big time and give it a chance to live on pump gas. If you really plan on Touring
with this build in the summer time, not having pinging issues with 11.5 comp is more than a little optimistic.

Being we tune and build, I can tell you that I would never set compression that high in your outlined kit to run on 91- 91 E10 fuel.. Just my 2 cents for what its worth.

I agree with this totally.  I have a good running 110 with heads cams pipe 58 TB with 11:1 comp 124/123

It pings a bit, I have a Thundermax with no knock sensor, but even with the knock sensor, it will be pulling timing automatically and costing performance. We didn't want to pull all the timing so I run a gallon of Cam 2 110 racing gas with every fillup and it runs awesome but if I had to take a long trip, I wouldn't be able to get it.  Nevertheless, I still want more!

I rode a 117 and it was really good.  If I would have had the motor out for bottom end, I would definitely have gone bigger. Maybe you should even go 124.   I am getting it done now with Jon Miller building me a big motor with lower compression. Nothing like the grunt from a bigger mill!

117in here. just shy of 10:1 compression T-man heads, 625 cams, stock TB, bottom end done also. 117hp / 130tq. pump gas friendly. I never had a touring bike over 10.25:1. Just didn't seam like a good ideal to me for my touring style. but it does sound like a fun motor build.

Certainly has a lot of everything, squeeze, breathing potential, duration and lift + overlap and TB.
If it was mine I would have followed the FullSac suggested route but use the proven HD 120r bottom with the same peripherals at 10.8.
If this 110 doesn't break through 132+hp and have a respectable torque curve (aggregate) a little less of everything may have been a better touring build. The HD 10.5 pistons, head work, and a larger TB with the SE259e has done 126hp coming from here tuned by DOC. So this is up a few notches in every aspect. The compression number with that cam does not bother me, I run that with my 117" and tour 2 up.

That is what I've been told twice already, once by the builder and then comfirmed again by T-Man, but because I value the opinions of those here who have infinitely more experience than I do in this area, I'm asking the question a third time to see if I get a different answer.

No doubt there are limitless ways this build could have (some will say "should have") gone.  I wanted to stay with one vendor as much as possible thinking that that approach had the best chance of delivering proven results.  I was not comfortable saying heads from "A," cams from "B" and a bottom end from "C" would give results that were better than the sum of their parts like a kit from a single source seems like it would do.  Thus, the T-Man decision.

On the displacement, I also wanted to keep it a 110, good, bad or indifferent.  No reason, except stubbornness, I suppose.

I'm not 100% sure what sort of numbers to expect.  That's part of the drama.  The same shop did a similar build 3 years ago that was 121 squared.  But it had a more restrictive air cleaner and exhaust, from what I understand, along with the 662-1 cams which might have hurt peak numbers a smidgen.  So, I'm expecting more than that since it'll be on the same dyno, but at the same time, I don't plan on having it tuned to within an inch of its life, just to get numbers I can brag about.  130+ would be great, but I am I thinking 125+ and hope I won't be disappointed.

Many thanks for all the comments.  It's all good stuff!

I know you have done your homework Brian.  May as well take the front forks off now and send them to Traxxion as they aren't busy between Thanksgiving and Christmas.    :cherry:

Bob, that's tempting!  Maybe next year!

You have good parts there and I didn't want to appear to be doubting your decision. Tman is a great company and provides quality parts. I consider them a value added partner of mine as I use his cams and recommend them when asked for advice even from non-customers.

Anything can be made to go fast in a straight line.  The twisties are where the rider's skill comes in.  When the road turns curvy, one of us will still be filling the other's mirrors up just like always.  ;) :2vrolijk_21:

kit starts at $2478 and does not include roller rockers or a larger TB
now you need to call TMAN to find out what else is needed for your bike and prices to install

You'd have to ask T-Man!  Stuff's been down there since a week or two before Christmas.  Mine was the first batch of parts this shop sent down there for the winter.  Sounds like they're keeping him busy with other projects besides mine, but so far, stuff has only gone down and nothing's come back up!  Hopefully, there's more to talk about by the end of the month ...

Yeah, this is his busiest time of the year, he usually tells 4-6 weeks for stuff during the winter.

This will give a little idea of what you have coming :nervous:

The differences will be.......... this one is only 10:8 - 1, 662-1 cams and has a Boarzilla pipe. I think you should be pushing close to 126 / 129 maybe more? Needless to say I am very very happy with this and no problems since the build. Also, just a note, if T-Man does your dyno work, his dyno is a little on the stingy side.

Yep, he's probably ringing the cash register pretty good right about now.  No worries as far as I'm concerned.  Between work and the weather, there won't be any riding until April, anyway. :(

Nice!  I went back and looked at your build thread to get the details.  It's almost identical to what I'm doing.  I actually ended up going with the 662-1 and 11.0:1, hoping it will be a little less fussy than the 662-2 at 11.5:1 would have been.  Your pipe probably breathes better, but you have a B motor ... should be an interesting comparison.

The dealer that is doing the work will tune it, but I'm not opposed to having T-Man clean it up, if needed.  I think this dealer's dyno is also stingy.  My '04 SEEG turned the lowest numbers there of the 3 dynos it was run on (same tune on all 3).

I understand giving the thumbs up, but who cares what you did for someone else, this isnt a congratulate the guy and throw a free advertisement out there that has no place in the conversation it wasn't asked for and surely isnt needed the advertisement I mean.   Must be really slow to resort to having to plug your own crap on a the guys build..... just sayin'.

and this is helping the conversation?

Neal,

Great question, I think it actually may help, it has your attention here and maybe with that it may stop them from continuing to push what they do as advertisement on other peoples things.   What they did has no bearing on this except a free plug to say LOOK at us.   I know myself and many others are tired of this type of advertisement and I shouldnt have to overt my eyes now just because they want a free plug.  We all know they have done many of these no matter what the build, the part or what have you, so whats the reason to continue to push it on people isnt that what a vendor section or their customers posts are for?

If you have a problem with something that is posted use the report to moderator button and the appointed Admin/Moderators will deal with it as they see fit. You stirring the pot doesn't help the thread just shows your "agenda". If you were really concerned about the thread you wouldn't do things that could cause it to get locked down.

Back to the build.  Brian, this sounds like a very good package.  Let me know when your coming over to pick her up.  I live about 3 miles away.

Still haven't heard from my buddy with the T-Man build Tim did @ same dealer.  I'll try him again!

Hey I heard of a build that....never mind! Good luck, TR's gear is very good.  We'll have to compare T-Man build when you get her back at it's in the upper 30's.

11.5-1   makes it one hell of a great touring bike for cross country rides :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:

Summer ,out west and 84 octane fuel and lots of heat,

After 2 builds I have no stomach for a 11.5 - 1 build

Good luck

Hey Brian,
Glad to see you've started the build.   Best of luck, I lasted 3 months then had to go for it.  You know my build   ;)   The hardest part will be waiting for it now.   Then the break in period.  Looking forward to watching the progress!

This past Tuesday it was Christmas in January at the Harley shop.  Several boxes had arrived from North Carolina.  I rearranged my schedule at work and took off about 3:00 to make the 90-mile drive to the shop.  It took us about an hour to open everything up and give it the once-over.  The packing job was incredible and all the parts were cleaner than I expected.  Very impressive.

I went back on Saturday to see how things were progressing.  I was surprised how close it was to being finished.

Since it was so close to being finished on Saturday, I went in to the office on Sunday so I could be in a position to head back to the shop on Monday to hopefully see and hear it run.  I got there about 15 mins late!  It was sitting in the dyno room cooling off from its initial run.

After it cooled it went through one more heat cycle on the dyno.

Tomorrow, it will go for a road test, come back and get cleaned up and then I will pick it up for the break-in.  First 700 miles with Shell Rotella T 15w-40, oil change to synthetic at that time and then final tune at 2,000 miles per T-Man's advice.  C'mon spring!

Jeff, I'm thinking about going back over there this Saturday.  If not, I need to be in Morton on Tuesday afternoon, anyway, so that would be my next chance.  And it wouldn't hurt to combine trips for once.  ::)

I'll keep you posted ...

Put 57 miles on the new motor today in 38* weather. ::)  Man, it runs sweet!  I've only run it up to 3500 so it's hard to get a real good idea on the power, but it feels great!  I am really shocked at how quiet it is.  i expected these cams and the roller rockers to be noisier.  You can hear the valvetrain a bit at an idle, but it's not objectionable at all.  And as soon as you pull away with it, it pretty much goes silent.  I am also surprised at how streetable it stayed.  So far, it doesn't seem to have any bad manners at all.  The cold idle is working perfectly, but once it's good and hot, it is idling about 100 rpm too low.  That could have been why it needed some throttle to start in the video.  it hasn't needed any help starting for me yet, though.

While it was out on the two-lane and moving, the oil temp hovered between 190* and 200*.  At the end of a 15 minute, or so, period in town and going stoplight to stoplight it was at 220*.  That is similar to what occurred with the stock motor (20-25* increase in town).  I will be keeping a close eye on the oil temps as the break-in continues and as air temps warm up this spring.

It has about 90 miles on it, now, 75 of that on the street.  The second 100 miles will see 4,000 - 4,500 rpm.  Looking forward to seeing how the cams pull on the other side of 4 grand! :huepfenjump3:

With the rubber mounts and isolated drive, this bike was already smooth as butter.  I can't really tell a difference with the balancing.  Maybe on a softail it would be more noticeable.  Main reason for doing the bottom end was for reliability.

Brian

Glad she's quiet.  TR says he put a lot of work into his newer series cams to quiet them down.  My 1st set of 590s ticked some.  TR sold me a new pair at his cost several years leter, quiet!  The 625 in my 110 are as quiet as stock.  They are the 1st cams I've used with that much lift.

We will have to ride em soon as the salt's off the pavement and it's sunny.

I'm getting the thumper setup done to my 110 FLHXSE2 currently. Sent my parts off 3 weeks ago. The waiting is definitely the hardest part. I did the HPI 58mm throttlebody also, did roller rockers and adjustable pushrods at the request of my builder. Can't wait to get back on my bike and twist the right grip a little bit!

Been awhile since I posted in here.  4,000 miles on the motor, so far.  Had a little trouble getting the final tune dialed in after the 2,000 break-in miles.  After 2,000 more miles of not being real happy with the way the thing was running, particularly at a cruise, and being told the Fullsac exhaust was part of the problem, I decided it was time to let someone else see what they could do.  Similar to another recent post, I am NOT going to bash the dealer.  I believe the wrenching part of this build went fine, but when it comes to tuning, I learned through this experience why everyone says the tune is the most important part and is best left to the experts in the field.  I took it for granted and thought it would be easier than it turned out to be.

After discussions through PM and at RibFest with people who's opinions I trust, I decided to take the bike to Jim Kennedy in Mattoon, IL.  I got the bike back today and it is a completely different animal!  Due to our incredibly pathetic weather, I only got to put a few miles on around town, but the bike now comes alive in the way that I knew it should.  Throttle response is instantaneous and the torque comes on quicker and lasts longer now than with any tune that was in it for the first 4,000 miles.  And in contrast to the complaints I was hearing about the exhaust system preventing good low-end driveability, Jim said he was impressed with the way the Fullsac x-pipe and 2" cores performed for him!

I probably spent about as much time talking with Jim as he spent tuning the bike.  He is very willing to explain everything he does and why he does it.  I felt bad for taking up as much time chewing the fat with him as I did because I am sure he had better things to do, but he never made me feel rushed and thoroughly answered all my questions.  He is a true enthusiast!

Looking forward to the next 4,000 miles, and beyond, now that the motor is running the way it was capable of.  127HP & 125TQ ...

Absolutely!  My normally 8 mile commute to work started an hour early today and ended up being 50 miles.  This thing is running sweet!  6K shifts drop it right back into the torque peak and the party just keeps on going.  I thought the 3 other tunes that were in it before always had decent WOT performance, but Jim took it to a whole new level.

More than that, the driveability around town is excellent now.  No hesitation in any gear or any RPM, power right off idle, and just very, very well-behaved.  The original tune that was in it had the best driveability around town, but no power.  This tune has it all.  Smooth, quiet and powerful.

Sounds like a lot of fun to ride Brian.  Good to read you got it well sorted out.  Still, however, it's not comforting to read that it took multiple tuning efforts to finally get one really good one.  Many guys would just assume their tune was good and have no clue how much performance and/or fun they were leaving on the table.

That's why guys like us always say it's more about the guy doing the tune than what tuning software is being used.  An experienced tuning guy can tune to our satisfaction with most any software.

Maybe not always 10 tenths and every last ounce of potential, but very satisfying for those of us who just like a bit more and a big smile!

I will be kicking myself in the ass for a long time for waiting as long as I did to get the tune sorted out.  On the other hand, I'm glad I didn't waste any more of this season either letting someone less capable than Jim keep tweaking on it, or try to talk myself into being satisfied with it the way it was.

I keep thinking the next time I ride it, I'm going to find an area that doesn't feel right, or could be better.  Hasn't happened yet.  On the contrary, it just seems to get better.

You at least need to know who to ask to find the guys in your area that know what they're doing.  Lucky for me, Jim is only an hour away.

"Who is the Wal-Mart of SE ?"

Not sure I understand? :nixweiss:
