Help, nav system question ??
« on: September 01, 2006, 07:12:20 AM »

I have a Garmin nav system and have used it occasionally to get from point A to point B (not a problem) Or used it to find a gas station or restuarant. In the fall we are planning a leaf-peeping trip in New England and would like to plan some "loops", starting and returning to the same place. Can't seem to find this in any of the instructions, They just get you from A to B.

Please use english when explaining as my A.D.D has been kicking in lately

With my Garmin I add "via-points" to make a circular route

Okay, but don't you first have to enter a destination? How can you enter the destination if you want to return to the same place you started???

You can't start and end at the same point - thus either pick a return location "close" to the starting location or divide the trip into two...

North bound

South bound

Place your "inbetween stops" and your done!

Hmmm, I've never had this problem - I don't think...

I'm using a basic 2610 and I usually bring up mapsource on the PC, plan the route with all the way points including start point - which I then copy and place as the finish point-

Moodman,
I don't know which Garmin you're using, but on the Quest I use the route planner function.  The route planner will let you enter the beginning and ending point the same and then add via points.

Well I had a play with my 2610 and just as you said Moodman, "you cant get there from here"

I did manage to do this though - it's kinda complicated - but it works

1. Select start point

2. Select any other place and add as end point

3. When Garmin has calculated go back into "route" and edit vias

4. Add the points you want to visit on your circular trip and include the start point again as the last one

5. Still in edit vias, select the original end point you selected in #2 and remove it

6. Et Voila!! You have a circular route starting and ending at the same place with all your stops in there.

Alternatively you can do what jfs suggested and pick a location real close to the start point (like the next house) and use that as the end point - much simpler!

Cheers

Speaking of NAV's - I am surprised at how well the nav on the 2006 incorporated into the radio works...

Used it heading up to Woodstock - no map but gives you pleanty of time of when to turn and uses little arrows...

Not as nice as the Garmins with Maps - but for a built in I'm happy (but always have a Garmin in the tour pack "just in case" I need that map...  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

LOL, this post cracked me up(I'm still chuckling).

$1000 for the HD unit & you still need the trusty old Garmin in the bag so you get all the features that come standard in any old $200 GPS unit............
