NEW ITEMS FROM THE MOTOR COMPANY FEB 2013
« on: February 21, 2013, 08:04:55 AM »

I just saw that the new catalog came out. There are some pretty cool items that some of you

maybe interested in.

LED'S lights for the front of the batwings, Screaming Eagle Primary chain tension adjuster, retractable side out luggage rack that will fit a full touring bag,

cool looking PY monkey bars for sportiers, black new pipes for touring bikes, battery tender harness with led lights and much more.

I tried to post the catalog acouple times but no such look.

Maybe some of you guys with more computer skills can find this and post it up. I found this on the "big HDforums" site under the touring section.

BTW, yeah I know.  :worthless:

Enjoy,

YELLOWBIRD

BTW,

At the bottom of the catalog, it shows Dealer cost, and MSRP.

Kinda interesting.

Not to sound negative again.....at least in the U.S. version of the P& A catalogue, you get the Msrp listed. Up here in Canuckville - Deeley makes damn sure that prices are not included in the publication. That really blows!!

i saw the manual adjuster - but it sure looks like the only way to adjust it is to take the primary cover off.... that would suck

the only primary made for a 07 that allows access to the center is the baker

Makes me wonder why the dealer acts like they are giving away the store when they have a 20% off sale.

If a dealer has a 20% off sale on stuff that has a 50% markup they are giving up 60% of their profit.
Example:  If cost is $100 then 50% markup has retail at $150.  20% off sale brings price down to $120 and they are giving up 60% of their profit.
What was a 50% markup is now a 20% markup, or from the retail side, what had a 33% gross profit margin now has a 16.66% margin.  Those margins will not cover the overhead.

Isn't the intent/belief that the 20% off sales will increase the volume of sales which would adjust the profit margin along with the increased volume of customers on those days I would think there has to be some benefit? I know for me when there are those types of sales I tend to purchase higher ticket/cost items along with purchasing more items.

Increasing volume doesn't change the margin of profit on sales.  Increasing the volume of sales at a lower margin might make up for the net lost due to a lower margin being caused by a discount.  In the end, however, that only means you're working more and spending more to make the same (you hope).  Whether that's all fair or not is, of course, a seperate question whose answer will often vary depending on if you're the buyer or the seller.

You are 100% correct, the intent is to increase the volume of sales and I, like you, tend to purchase more when discounts are offered. :)  However, at these margins a dealer would need to sell 2.5x as much product with a 20% discount vs selling at Harley's suggested retail to realize the same profit.  And, as twolanerider said, you're working more and spending more to make the same (you hope)

Maybe profit margin was the wrong wording.... what I'm thinking is if on a normal Saturday you average 10K in sales on P&A/Motorclothes and you have a 20% off sale on a given Saturday and you average 30K in sales due to the increase volume of customers/sales wouldn't it be advantageous for the dealer as it is for the customer? Yes, the amount of profit per item/sale is lower but the amount of profit for the day is higher. Yes, there may be more work (increased staff/etc) but in the end it would seem there is still a higher profit for that sale day over a regular day. :nixweiss:

Hell sometimes you eat steak... sometimes you eat bologna and cheese... in the end both serve the same purpose... they keep away the "missed-meal cramps". :D One day you make 33% gross profit one day you make 16% gross profit but those days you make that 16% you are building your customer base and that's got to be a good thing.

I agree totally, however, at a Harley dealership that sells $10K on a Saturday, a 20% off sale usually results in about a $15K Saturday.  Still can be worthwhile for building your customer base and dealership reputation.

Sure Dood.  That's it.  The store would always prefer to meet its desired goals for net while hiring less staff and spending less for inventory.  The buyer would always prefer to buy for a lower gross and have plenty of staff on hand to help as he needs it.  It's the smart vendor who realizes that while he might do the former some of the time (even enough of the time) he's better off overall to sometimes entice his audience with the latter and do them a solid at the same time.  A happy audience is a returning audience.

A danger for some industries has been too much reliance on the latter (even if of need).  The pre-bailout automakers who couldn't move enough cars without too expensive incentives being but one example.

Thanks. I knew there had to be something worthwhile (even if it's not as much profit margin as a regular day) for the dealer otherwise they wouldn't be having events/sales. :2vrolijk_21:

True... there is a thin line between profit and loss. :nervous: However a little bit of profit beats the hell out of a loss any day (granted you can't have consistent/daily days of small profits before you will go under by not meeting the overhead).

Sometimes even the short term narrow loss is tactical and a good thing.  Supermarkets do "loss leaders" to get people in their stores.  A busy Saturday at the bike shop populated by many new customers on a break even day brings those people back in later.  Just have to avoid relying on the loss leaders or break even days to keep the inventory turned or as a quick fix to meet payroll.

My experience with 20% off sales at my local dealership have been pretty dramatic. That is the only time I load-up on parts and HD clothing. The parts counter always has a line of customers waiting to place their order. They never have a line during off sale days. The sales also benefit service. A lot of customers like me buy the parts on sale and then pay service to install. I want the sale to work for both parties. This also keeps me loyal, I only buy from my dealer. Bikes, parts and clothing.

I understand the dealers need to make a profit to stay in business and I do not want to lose anymore dealers here, we have lost 2 already. But I am to the point that I only buy when it is at least 20% off. Retirement is near and as I prepare for that the more I save, the better. I still buy as many parts as ever, I just now am more patient and willing to wait for a sale, or e-commerce if necessary. I have a LED headlamp on order now for the RG. The part local, with tax $748 and online $559 for a $189 savings. No tax and no freight. Point is at this time it was buy with discount or do not buy at all.

Why would anybody buy a primary chain tension adjuster? They're all all auto tensioners today. I never buy anything from HD if I can help it, they got enough of my money when I bought the bike.

LOL! ... just like a lot of their other parts too, but that's the first I've heard about the auto tensioner being junk. I installed one in my 05 so I didn't have to adjust the original all the time and I never had any problems, none with this one either ... not yet anyway. What's the problem with them?

A heads up just in case some of us are waiting on one of these. I have one of the adjustable detachable racks coming to one of our local dealers. Checked on the status Saturday and no dealer in TN has one. They are back ordered. Got to see one at SMHD but that was a display. Delivery date for back order is end of March. Good thing we didn't have a big trip planned this month.  :(

If you've never had the primary cover off a bike with the auto tensioner you probably won't know why they are junk. But everyone I've had off the chain is banjo string tight. They have caused a lot of inner primary bearing failures. Hard acceleration and engine braking cause the tensioner to tighten the chain and with the ratchet mechanism the chain stays tight instead of backing off.

Well, another update on the adjustable, detachable rack, part number 50300044.  NOBODY has 'em.  They are back ordered all over the US.  SMHD (local dealer) and Rebecca at Tri County HD in OH did a national search.  Nobody has 'em except for a few dealerships in Calif. and one in Florida.  I have a line (thanks inferno1976...appreciate the info and help) on maybe some available at a dealership in MO but haven't heard back from them.  Just heard from them....none there either.  The ones they have are going on bikes already.

As another note, the Chizeled Handlebar, part number 55800103 or 55800198, is in the same boat....none available anywhere but not sure if they are backordered.  SMHD in Maryville has one of the backrest (their display model) but as I need two, it would not be fair to get me one and leave my buddy out as we both just sold our air wing racks.
Funny thing, none of the new products listed in the pdf file that was posted here OR the February parts supplement at our local dealers are listed on the HD website in the New parts or regular parts listings.
Keep y'all posted.... ;)
