After Reading All the TC Motor Problems
« on: February 21, 2013, 11:56:03 PM »

Hi Guys,
I spent a lot of time reading about all the TC motor problems.  Man, I sure a Glad I have a EVO motor. It ain't stock, its a S&S V111 and I love it. I loved the stock 80" that was mildy hopped up too.   I see lots of TC bikes for sale but few EVO bikes. WHY? Where did they all go? Sure they are not perfect but they are better. I know some bike shops are still open due to the TC motor problems .I think that if Harley had not made the TC then a lot of HD shops would have closed.  I just don't see many EVOs on the road any more. There are even fewer Shovel and Pans on the road. Most are in shows. I sure miss seeing the older bikes on the road that I few up riding. My first HD was a 1942 45" Flat Head in high school then a 1974 74" when I got out of the Army. Built a custom 88" Shovel, Big Blue made September 85 issue of Hot Bike. I also built. A 102" Shovel/EVO. Back then getting something custom was even more expensive because not everyone was making the parts. Cubic Inches Cost Cubic Dollars! Thanks for listening. Feeling kinda down.

I agree with you Tank!!! The EVO has always been by favorite. The problem being, '99 was the last year, '98 for some models & now thats 14 years ago. Old stuff tends to fade away.........except for the collectors.

Miss my EVO  :bigcry: :bigcry:

50,000 on my '99 FXSTC, but it's had it's share of problems, not the least of which were crank bearings that resulted in a complete rebuild. No problems with any of my TC's. That being said, the EVO is the bike of choice all summer. Miss my '79 low rider shovel, too. I also look for the older bikes but find less of them every year. Most I find are very loyal to their EVO's. Really wish there were more shovels around.       JoeS

Think my '98 FaBoy (anniversary model) was my favorite.  Not stock, not radical.  Sweet running bike.  Wish I'd not sold my Fatty to a Hotty!!  :bananarock:

After opening the 2000 Road king with only 40k miles and seeing the follower wear, crank shaft bushing wear in the cam plate, scoring of the cam plate and oil pump, it sure makes me miss the 98 Road king with 142k miles.

Evo's are a rugged engine.
We've seen them abused/misused, and they hang in there.
Take one that has been "adult" driven, and easy for someone to roll well past 100,000 miles, even with mild performace modifications. :2vrolijk_21:

Mine came close, but didn't quite make it w/o having to be re-maned........but, then there's that 'adult driven' caveat ~  :-[  har.  :drink: spyder

The Moco contracted S&S to develop the 4 1/4" stroke, 3 1/2" bore engine and was used in the 1978 FLH 80" Shovels, and the Evo's 'till 1999.
21 year run with the same basic engine design, ain't bad.

I had a '98 Anniversary Fatboy too and would like to have kept it.  My brother needed to stop fixing his shovel and ride so I sold it to him.  Never had a bit of trouble from the engine.

I had a '98 Evo Fatboy.  Never had an issue with it.  I knew it was going to start every time I hit the button, and that it would keep running until I hit the kill switch.  Never had to even check the oil between changes.  My Twin Cam I have to check - and add - after every long ride.  And it made more mechanical noises out of the box than my Evo ever did.  People will look back on them like they used to with Shovels and Pans.  Should have kept mine.

I still have and ride my 98 road king.  It's a damn sweet ride.  All I've ever done is replace the rocker box gaskets to the newer 1 piece designs.  That and a starter clutch.

When I got an Evo all my older friends were saying "Hear no Evo see no Evo" Now they say the same thing about the twin cam, and the Evo is the best motor. :huepfenlol2:

The Evo saved the MoCo. 'Never owned one, but rode a bunch of them, 'always thought that they were light years ahead of the Shovel (which I ran for 15 years), the best thing since sliced bread...

I asked some of the MoCo engineers why the Twin Cam? and they told me that they could do more with the geometry of the TC.

'Wonder if looming emissions regulations had anything to do with it???

One has to take into consideration how many TCs are out there, due to the rise of popularity of Harley, probably more TCs built than Evos, Shovels, Pans, and Knuckles combined...

Went from Shovel to TC and missed the entire EVO phase. Sounds like it was a huge jump though and yes a Harley savior. Reading all of Donnie Peterson's books on the TC and if he is the guru he seems to be I'll be working the bugs out of my TC's. Foundation sounds solid but all the EPA and profit margins take their toll on the TC. I still don't understand why they thought the pressed together crank was a good idea. All about profit.
