Who makes the best boot?
« on: March 10, 2013, 06:59:18 PM »

I know there is no one boot out there that fits everyone, what I am looking for is quality in your opinion of course.
I was looking at these boots, has anyone out there tried them out? How does the Velcro hold up? Does water get inside the boot during wet weather riding?
Sorry for the tiny picture... The boot is a Chippewa model 27862

I have been looking at that boot for awhile... really like the looks of it and it appears it would be great for riding. My only concern and what has kept me from pulling the trigger is I haven't had anyone be able to tell me how it is for standing/walking. :nixweiss: I've had boots before that were great for riding but once you got off the bike you couldn't do much standing/walking in comfort. :(

I have Harley FXRG3 boots.  I had looked at them a long time, as they were over 200 dollars.  I liked the idea the were water proof and thinsulate.

One day I saw them on sale for 165 so I bought them.

They were comfortable and nice, pretty good for walking and standing.  However I still felt like I spent too much.  I had bought them in August.

Well in Oct on my way to Daytona, 456 of the miles were in the rain, from Atlanta to Macon the rain was so hard traffic was at 30 mph.  I was afraid to pull off, as it was raining so hard no one would see me, and I knew the truck behind me knew I was in front of him.

At any rate my feet were 100% dry.    The boots are four years old now, still look good, still feel pretty good, and still keep my feet dry.  I wear them year round.  I have zero regrets spending the money on them now, and will do it again when I wear these out.

X2 on the FXRG boots. Have a pair of FXRG2's and FXRG3's. Paid near retail for the 2's and love them. Waterproof and light. Saw the 3's on sale for $80 and got them for when the 2's wear out. Have walked miles through Sturgis in the hot August weather and never had a problem. Do like the look of the Chippewa's tho. Do they come in brown or tan?

The Chippewa's look like a nice boot but pretty obviously are not waterproof. Something to consider when packing that one pair of boots for the trip.

I think if you search Cruiserworks on here you will find out they are the boot of choice. Dennis Kirk has the on sale right now. I just picked up a pair they are amazingly light and seem like they will be comfortable.

I have had at least 1o different pairs of different types of boots and none of them compared to the Red Wings I bought a few months ago. Rubber soles and completely waterproof. These boots are made for guys that use them to make a living so the comfort and quality is on a whole different level then any "motorcycle boot" I have ever worn before. The Boa lacing system that is made out of stainless steel laces (just close wheel and spin) is not only unbelievably easy with no laces to tie but gives you a snug fit like I have never felt before. Below is the boot Im talking abouts website.

That is the boot that I have worn for the past 8 years.  I did not think they made them any more.  I tried to find a new pair last year and could not find them anywhere.

As far as waterproof, I never have had an issue with them.  Just keep them coated.

The velcro is starting to need to be replaced.  Too bad they don't have shoe repair places any more.

Looking at the Red Wing site and see the warranty for waterproofing is 1 year.
Like them or not, the FXRG are warranted for 5 years, including waterproof.

FXRG are best when the new models come out and the previous are deeply discounted.

I wear 5.11 tactical boots. Very comfortable, I actually wear them at work often, walking and standing almost all day on concrete floors and my feet never bother me. I have non waterproof and gore-tex lined version. The lined is a little too warm for comfort in the heat of a Georgia summer even though they breathe a little. If it's going to be really cold though I sometimes pull out my BMW Santiago boots. Great for riding but can't walk around long in them, I usually wear them when I ride dual-sport though for the extra ankle protection and stiffness.

I like my Danner Recons' . Quality American made boots , water proof , comfortable in hot /cold weather . Good for the ride and walking around all day once you get there . Also look sharp  IMO .

Don't get me wrong - Chippewa makes good boots but if you're in S. Alberta....you've got a CDN company next province over that makes excellent quality boots and has customer service that is second to none - Dayton Boot Company in Vancouver. They're not cheap (starting at $350 +) but they are hand-made and you will not wear them out. Check their website at daytonboots.com! Seriously, you won't be sorry you did.   :xyxthumbs:

p.s. I've had a pair of their Engineer Rider Boots for 4 years now and they still look like new. Keep them oiled and you're good to go.

FXRG's are about the only boot from Harley that is worth the money. Anything else that is made by Wolverine in the pacific rim are chit - pure and simple. Bottoms don't last and the zippers are aluminum (be prepared to replace). I fully agree with the comments on the FXRG but they would tend to get a tad warm to walk around in for extended periods of time. The Gortex is a pretty good heat insulator. JMHO.  :coolblue:

I have been wearing the Chippewa model 27862 for 2 years now and it is THE BEST most COMFORTABLE boot I have ever worn. I sprayed them with water repellant and put rubber cleats on the heels and after 2 years of over 20K miles of riding (Sturgis, Daytona, Rolling Thunder DC) they are still like new. Very well made. Can not say enough about these boots. I also wear them sometimes for every day use when not riding because they are comfortable for walking also. They are a little dirty in this picture because I wore them riding all weekend and not have had a chance to wipe them down.

I have the women's HD boot Teagan I think it is. I agree with the others about the sole not standing up to the heat and mine tore in the heel. I guess I pivot when I am getting on my bike or off it or something. But, I had the best price of all, FREE! I won them in a holiday HD promotion. I need a better boot, but have huge calves so they have to be on the short Side for my ankles, though a bit taller heel/base would be great. They need to have zippers. http://www.amazon.com/Harley-Davidson®-Womens-Leather-Harness-D84424/dp/B00822D3SE/ref=pd_sbs_shoe_1 anyone have other ideas?

I bought the FXRG3 boots a couple of years ago and have no regrets. Best boot I have ever owned. I did a lot of research 1st. My best friend has worn nothing but Redwings for years and just bought his first pair of FXRG3s and said its the best he has ever worn.
Now for summer, a lighter weight and cool looking waterproof slip on boot is an Australian made boot called Red Back. Rather pricey as well @ $150.00 but incredibly comfortable with a really grippy soul. Check them out, I promise you won't be sorry. Bought mine at Whistle Work Wear. They gave me 10% off.

I've had a pair of Carolina 16" lace up logger boots since 2003. If I'm not riding I wear them cutting wood, doing general construction, yard work etc...

They've held up really good but they can get hard on your heals after a few hours of standing. You should note that I can't stand those cushy insoles.

So - the FXRG's are warranted for 5 years. Last years trip down to Maggie Valley had me in very heavy rain for hundreds of miles. Both my FX jacket and boots kept me pretty dry. Just one little wet mark on my sleeve and socks got just slightly damp.

Talked to my dealer and was told bring them in, they will either be fixed or replaced - good deal.

Pulled them out of the closet today to head to the dealer and apparently "my wife's" golden decided to use the toe of one for a chew toy. >:(  (my girl would never do that)

So much for that warranty.

support the FXRG3 too.

We took them to Greece in over 100°F and to the Alps in less than 20°F, soaked them in several successive days of downpours, walked both cities and mountain paths with them - best alround boot I met in over 40 years of hunting and motorbike riding. As of this winter I always keep a pair of them in my cars trunk as they really became my preferred bad weather boot. They don't look cool or pretty but they do their job  ;)

Are the soles heat resistant?

I've been wearing S.W.A.T. boots for several years.  Cost is about the same or around $110.00.  The soles do not melt on pipes.  That along with comfort are two huge selling points for me.  Not particularly stylish, but otherwise worthwhile.  :2vrolijk_21:

The reason I ask is the 5.11s look a little better and if comfortable, are worth consideration.  Thanks!

My vote is for Wesco.  I wear a pair of the Boss model and they become your feet.   Heavy, protective, and perfectly comfortable.  See at: http://www.westcoastshoe.com/wesco/home.asp

I have the FXRG boot (got them dirt cheap on sale) and I also have a pair of Cruiserworks.  Both are completely waterproof. For walking around, I'd have to give the edge to the Cruiserworks.  For riding, both are about the same.

I would not even consider a pair of boots that were not 100% Waterproof...sooner or later you're going to get caught in a toad strangler downpour and there is nothing worse than wet feet.

Thanks!
I got mine after my other bootmakers went out of business, I'm happy

I have the Original Swat Boots (thanks JC!)  however, the insoles are not real good for all day, day after day.  I looked at the Swat gel insoles and they really weren't much better looking, still no arch.

I went to Redwing and bought their $50 insoles, they are like orthotic insoles, but they form to your feet with the heat from your feet.  You can also warm them up in the oven, stick them in and walk and they form faster.

I can now wear the Swat boots all day, day after day.  You end up at about $150.

The thing I really like is how lite the boot is.  I sprayed my with a waterproofing spray to beef up their water proofing.

I've been wearing the waterproof SWAT boots for about five years.  Very comfortable, light and absolutely no wet feet when riding in the rain.  We did a sixteen trip a couple of years ago to Canada and New England.  Rode seven days in the rain and no wet feet!

Wolverine as we know is the parent company that produces the Harley Davidson Footwear line which makes the ever popular FXRG is made.

Recently under their Bates label they've introduced a whole new line of Motorcycle boots which are a step up on the fashion boots the MOCO specs to fit a specific profile and price point.

You can give the Bates line a look here: http://www.batesfootwear.com/US/en/Riding-Collection?cid&keyword=bates%20footwear&pcrid=20038054027

Do they come in brown or tan?
were did you get 3s for 80 bucks

Agree, have worn these for years on constuction projects. Very comfortable and rugged, won't be called a sissy boy while wearing these.

I have to chime in here on the boots I've had for over 18 years, Rocky.  They aren't black and don't look like motorcycle boots but they have been with me on MANY miles, cross country, through sun, rain, snow and kept my feet warm and dry.  Rocky doesn't make this boot anymore but it's got 800 grain thinsulate, 100% waterproof and have worn extremely well for $140 bucks.  Even with the summer heat, these boots keep my feet comfortable.  I've looked at replacing them over the years but can't find anything new I like as well as these.  They still keep my feet warm/dry and are great walking boots after the days ride.  Don't know what I'm going to do when they finally do wear out.  I know I'll be looking at another pair of Rocky boots, however.

I agree Rocky boots are very comfy. I used them for hunting but the arch plate started squeekin when I walked and was hard to be sneaky so changed to Browning after third pair of Rocky's started the squeek

I have a couple pairs of FXRG's and they are very good, comfortable to walk in and have had no problems with leaks but they are pricey and I seem to wear the soles out pretty quickly, here local they want $75 to resole them. We both are currently wearing Ridge 9000's, they are about $115 with free shipping from Central Police (online) and they have the zipper side, every modern thing possible in the soles inc the air chamber similiar to Nike. Great to walk-in, They have a Vibram looking sole that seems to wear excellent, and my wife says they are the only boots she ever had that she didn't mind wearing all day.

I find a few things interesting here: I've been following boot threads on other bike forums recently and our main discussion in those is comfort and safety. There hasn't been one post here regarding safety. Several medics have mentioned finding downed riders with 9" and lower boots pulled off in a slide and the feet are ground down. Lack of propper toe, ankle and heal cups leading to completely crushed feet. The lack of shin protection on the lower boots leading to shattered shins. Some times there is not much else wrong with the rider except that their lack of propper foot protection has led them to them being permanently crippled. Makes you think about boots made for walking or working and not riding.
On my Dl 1000 I wear a dual sport boot, a cross between an MX boot and a HD riding boot. Adequate heal, toe and ankle protection and a heavier shank. Shin height is much higher with a plate. Not as much protection as my MX boots, but they are comfortable, water proof and neither hot or cold. Been over 5K miles in them on one trip only changing into low converse TS for longer hikes. I even wear them on the HD at times.
Now before the retorts begin, most of the time on the HD I wear my waterproof HD boots.
I just wanted you all to stop and think about safety once in a while while shopping for riding gear.  :2vrolijk_21:

Don't get me wrong - Chippewa makes good boots but if you're in S. Alberta....you've got a CDN company next province over that makes excellent quality boots and has customer service that is second to none - Dayton Boot Company in Vancouver. They're not cheap (starting at $350 +) but they are hand-made and you will not wear them out. Check their website at daytonboots.com! Seriously, you won't be sorry you did.   :xyxthumbs:

p.s. I've had a pair of their Engineer Rider Boots for 4 years now and they still look like new. Keep them oiled and you're good to go.
Had my Dayton engineers boots for over 10 years now and are still like new. I have recently tried a pair of Bates tactical boots, they say there worn by the swat team. Very light, laced with side zip. After reading what trapperdog has to say, I would have to say the engineers boots would definitely be the safest. Dayton boot company has many pictures of celebs buying there now.
