My daughter will be traveling to Thailand for 2-3 weeks.  What is the easiest  way to keep in touch with cell service.  Her phone is through Verizon but does not work out of the country.  can she rent a phone?

We talk to my daughter in the UK couple times a week using Skype. Free video calls over the net. Don't need a camera, just makes it better.

I heard that Skype works very well from there.  My cousin is moving to Thailand very soon and when he was there, he kept in touch with his brother via Skype.  I never heard of Skype until last week when I took my cousin out to dinner and he was telling me about having a video conference with his brother in Thailand.  My cousin is living in Brazil until his move, and I guess it works well to therer also.  Don't ask me why my cousin is living in Brazil or why he is moving to Thailand...I still haven't figured any of that out yet and I probably never will.

Skype will work any where as long as you have a decent connection. If your connection is on the slow side you just turn off the video feed.

Skype needs Internet connection, it can not replace a cell phone. The best solution is to buy a cheap prepaid phone locally. She can call you with the number once, and you can call from the U.S. thereafter. Just make sure your phone(s) have a good international calling plan. A plus is, that she has a phone to use locally as well.

We IM'd on facebook from there, as I recall Thailand is where he had trouble getting online here, national fireqall issues or so such baloney.  He does skype as well.

The simplest way is to buy a prepaid sim card which gives you a local Thailand number that can make and receive international calls. Most cell phone operators are GSM but Hutchison CAT does CDMA so whichever phone you have now can be used in Thailand. Your phone must be unlock (not restricted to one operator here in the USA), there are phone service guys in Thailand that will unlock your phone for a small fee.

The sim card will cost about $US 30~40, you can then buy recharge cards when you run out of the initial credits. You can buy the sim cards almost everywhere, just look for anyplace selling new/used mobile phones, they are everywhere. These places also know how to unlock your phone if you need that done.
