06 CUSE Starter Problem
« on: October 03, 2006, 12:14:22 AM »

Yesterday I was riding my bike in the Rocky Mountains and noticed my amp's falling.  I pulled over and heard this whining coming from my bike.  The starter was engaged while the engine was running. My bike now starts once I turn the "engine run" switch on and the starter doesn't disengage.  I had to pull the wire from my starter to get home.  Once home I replaced the starter relay and the ignition relay but it hasn't fixed the problem.  My starter remains engaged whenever I turn the engine on.

Anyone have any suggestions on what this might be and/or how to fix this?

I had this same problem on my '02 Deuce. It started after washing the bike. The starter continued to engage and finally ran down the battery. I had the starter replaced and that sloved the problem for awhile. Same thing happened again a couple of months later after being in a major rain storm. Luckily I was only 3 miles from Myrtle Beach HD. They replaced the switch and I haven't had a problem since. AJ

You're still under warranty.  Bring it in and let the "experts" figure it out!

I'm on my 3rd starter but they have all been jack shaft issues on chrome starters.

I'm with Fired00d; if it's the starter, I'd just pay the difference and have them put the chrome starter in when they work on it.  A buddy of mine added the chrome starter and it looks great, but not worth the $625 outright.  Keep that in mind...more chrome!! [smiley=banana.gif]

Thanks guy's,

The winner is "the switch" [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif].  Brought it in today to a friend and he replaced the engine run switch and that solved the problem.  He said he has seen at least 20 of these go wrong on Harley's and that he even kept 2 in stock because they go so often.  He fixed it in 1 hour ($150) rather than waiting the 7 days Harley was going to make me wait.

I already have the chrome starter.

Thanks for all the suggestions!  You guy's are awesome.

A little off the subject but,
I must say that with my dealer, if I have a problem with my "CVO" I get treated like one might expect from a Cadillac (vs Chevy) dealer (assuming there is a difference for this example).
In all situations for service, it has been same day.  If they did not have the part (oil leak needed a gasket ordered) they performed all the other work/service and said they would call me when the part came in... but they asked if I wanted my bike returned rather than keeping it.  One time I missed the last shuttle service so they had someone in the shop take me home.  I would like to think that is the way the treat all customers, but maybe the CVO help$$$

Magic,

I wish that were true :-/  Unfortunately for me, that has not been the case.  Just as a side note, I purchased my bike in March 2006, I have 32,500km on it and I have never brought it to the Harley Dealer for service, warranty or otherwise!  My Dealer always tells me to drop the bike off as soon as possible and they will get to it when they get a chance but it may be in there shop for 7 days.  This is unacceptable to me so I have made other arrangements.

I am glad you have found a Dealer that looks after you the way they should look after us [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]
