bad cam bearings?  anyone else?
« on: October 11, 2006, 12:37:15 PM »

I have a 103 that developed a ticking noise.  Sounded like a rocker was out of adjustment.  It got worse quick.  I asked the dude at the local HD dealership and said bad cam bearings and it was transmitting the noise up the push rods into the valve cover and thats why it sounded like a bad rocker.  Does this sound right?  Anyone else expierence anything like this?  Thanks

How many miles? Cam bearings could go but I would think you would have more than a "tick" if they went. I would crack the cam cover open and take a look at the tensioner shoes first.

My recent ride to Sturgis I thought my top end was getting really noisey.  As I left Sturgis and rode through Wyoming and down into Idaho, my bike quit pumping oil.  Come to find out, it was the cam chain tensioner shoes......they were shot.

The bits of pieces from the shoes take out the oil pump.  Keep an eye on your oil pressure guage and see if it starts doing weird things.  Mine pegged on 60 psi at one point then didn't move off of 0 psi at another.

JC how many miles on the shoes,  I have amost 40,000 on the 04 and Brad at Freedom said I was flirting with disaster.  I guess I should probably put gear drives in and be done with it.

I've looked at outside shoe at about 30,000 and it showed little wear.  You are right tough I do like the gear drives on the 06.

Mr Magoo-
You're ready for gear drives.  Every picture I've seen of the cam shoes, the inside which is hard to see is always worse than the outside one.  Cut your oil filter apart and you'll know for sure.

My outside cam chain tensioner shoe showed very little wear, too.  It was the inside shoe that was down to nothing.

What's the difference in the 1 up version and the 2 up version?  HP and TQ of both?  Do you have a dyno sheet showing both?  Help the common man understand this Dave.
