Rear Guards
« on: June 28, 2013, 09:03:25 PM »

The wife,  (TTTDOC)was reading a post  the other night about  Ms C adding rear guards to her bike. Part number  49261-00AHDM. Despite what was posted they do not fit,   and NO you cannot turn them upside down or put the right on the left etc.

However, they were very close, a few inches from fitting at the top anchor point. I took this as a challenge and was determined to make it work.
Attached are pictures of the process and finished product.

no modifications to the bike or adapters were needed.

I removed the rear peg and placed the bottom mount between the rear bag holder and peg mount.

The kit comes with longer bolts to accommodate the added space of the guards.  They also have nuts to put behind them but they were not necessary as the original holes are threaded.

IN order to get the top of the guard to fit I used a ratchet strap to help get it aligned.

I also used some painters tape to make sure I didn't scratch her chrome.  Once is was aligned I put in the new bolt. Again I did not use the nut provided.

one more view.  I was certain to remember to put the zip ties back on to keep the bags secure. Dont want to drop another one.  The only issue I see is that it really means that you will need to keep the bags on but I appreciate the safety provided for the wife if she puts it down. Plus I think it looks pretty good to boot.

I'm impressed, very inventive approach to installation.  I agree they look nice, glad to see you remembered the zip ties just to be safe.

so, are you saying you placed the lower mount of the guard between that chrome/black plastic bushing and the rear footpeg?  And run the bolt thru the guard, bushing, and thread it into the frame??

Yes. That way it keeps the lower bag arm holder in its original location.   I also looked at putting it behind the frame which would have required the use on the nut that was provided but that didn't line up as well.

Yes, exactly.  those bars were made almost exclusively for a heritage Softail (most softails, anyway).  On our bike, they "almost line up" when trying to put them into the same position as on the Heritage (behind the frame).  On the Heritage they line up there and the bolt goes right thru and you put a nut behind it.  Would like to see one in the flesh as it mounts on our bike but pictures are good.
