It's about time that a gps is specifically designed for bikers. Can't wait to try one out.

I can't wait to see this thing.  Garmin finally put up the comparison (after I asked) so that I could match it up to the Roadtech Quest/Conquest.

They won't answer my question, though, if I can copy the dealer map over to the Zumo.  I'm assuming you can't...

I will REALLY be interested in anyone's feedback regarding this new system.  I have the HD Quest and have had a horrible time just keeping the thing from falling off both the  cradle and the fairing mount.  Garmin has sent me a "new" cradle that is supposed to fix the problem, but I can't see any difference from the new one to the old one.  Also, I went to the HD dealer and asked about a "new" fairing mount.  What I found out was there is a service bulletin about the "old" mount, but they are having trouble ordering the "new" mount.  I sure am anxious to see and hear about this new product and how it actually mounts to the bike.  Will keep looking for anyone to post some info.

GETFEETWET.com is where I am buying mine.  They have an unpublished price that you have to call them for.  They recently said that Garmin's release date is 11/25/06.  Thought you might want to know.  I think the latest price to me was around $800...?  We'll see what they come up with when they are shipping.

Spec. page says it comes with motorcycle mount. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Zumo Specifications

I'm interested in seeing it mounted and in use also. I can't decide whether I'd want to get it or the Garmin 2820.

http://stores.gpscrazy.com/-strse-110/Garmin-Zumo-550/Detail.bok

Check out this price...$739 free next day shipping.

These are scheduled to ship on 11/22!!!

Oh, and I believe that it attaches to standard RAM mounts.
Garmin has shipped these, and they should be in stock within 2 days.  That's the last word from GETFEETWET.com.  They are selling them for $775 Dealer Cost.  I got a quote today.  You have to contact them and pre-order, payment deferred.  If you tell them that you ordered it and you should be on the list, I bet you pay $775.  You have to call though.

OK, first one to get one and mount it PLEASE post some pics!!! [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]  The price is about what I paid for the Quest from the HD dealer, and this new unit sure seems to be a lot better for the bike.  Who's going to be first? [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

My unit shows as "SHIPPED" today.  That means I should have it tomorrow.  Of course I'll post photos.  So far GPSCRAZY has the best deal I've found.

I'm sure that I'll be playing with it quite a bit.  However, I already have a RAM mount installed from my 2620, so I'll have to see if the brake assembly is worth changing out.  I'll post pics either way!

The security screw on the 2730 is easier to gert to...but to be honest I don't bother!  Never came out other than imprpoer install once and that was before I started moving.

Keep the review coming!

I know I want one!

This is actually what the mount looks like with a "u" bolt to mount to your handlebar:

with this part attaching to the Garmin Mount:

I ordered one of these from Touratech for a cleaner install.

I'm still getting a feel for it.  It has a lot of cool features like the MP3 player and bluetooth.  I matched it up with my cell phone and it works really well.  Actually, when it's in the car mount it is a complete hands free unit with a built in microphone and speaker in the mount.  The bike mount has ouput jacks on the side for microphone and speaker out.

Coming from a Quest unit and previously a Streetpilot III, it is apparent that Garmin is "dumbing down" the usability of their units.  From what I can see, you can't do any of the detailed map configurations like the older units such as setting up your map display in detail such as how the text displays for different size cities and things of that nature or being able to customize your display as to what categories you want to see on the map screen, like speed, altitude, distance to next waypoint, etc..  There are no longer Waypoints, they are now POI's or Points of Interest.  You need to download their POI loader (free) from their website if you want to load the dealer databases.  I still have not found a way to load Harley's database that is in the Quest units.  They are .rgn files.  The Zumo accepts .gpx and .gdb files.  The Zumo will accept multiple POI files as long as you load them from the same folder.  When loaded they will be under the "Extras" folder under the "Where To?" selection from the opening screen.  Any "waypoints" that you have loaded in Mapsource will get loaded in the "Favorites" selection off the main screen.

Don't get me wrong, though.  This is a great unit!!  A bit heavier than a nuvi and it certainly seems durable.  I like the 3D mode that will show you "going down the road" with customizable icons instead of an arrow.  The icons are anything from Monster trucks to motorcycles that you can also download from the Garmin site.  The screen is a nice bright, glare resistant screen with great resolution and colors.  I'm pleased with it so far and I'm sure there are things I didn't "discover" yet about it, but so far, I like it.

Flying Ace, can you post some pics of the unit mounted on your bike, please?  As for the security screw, I think I know why they have that...I have the HD Quest unit and it has fallen off my bike at least twice.  Once it fell off and hit the freeway and was toast.  Garmin did send me a new one, but the falling off has continued.  I added a "security screw" of my own.  Also, is there a way to mount this unit on the fairing, or is only mountable on the handlebars?  Appreciate your input, as I would like to find a unit that is reliable and looks good.  Look forward to your pics and input.

Did the Zumo come with a maps disc that you can load into your desktop for route planning?

Are the batteries rechargeable and does it come with a charger?

Let us know how the blue tooth works (cell phone) while at speed.  I assume you use your own blue tooth headset.

I purchased a hood for my street pilot because at various sun angles i couldn't see it.  Is the new screen good enough to see in all angles?

Sounds like your having a lot of fun.  Enjoy!

I don't have it on the bike yet.  I'm waiting for the chrome handlebar clamp that I ordered.

It does come with Mapsource City Navigator to plan routes and comes with a charger and a rechargeable battery.

I haven't used it on the bike yet, but when I do, I'll let you all know how it works out.

I was also wondering in regards to the battery if there is a way to hard wire it to bike for power (looking at the cradle I would think so, but wanted to make sure). In the spec sheet for the Zumo it says "Removable lithium-ion battery; up to four hours use". To me that seemed an awful short battery life it that's the only way it can be used on the scooter. Sure does.  There's a four pin plug in them middle of the cradle that the plug goes into with more than enough cable to get under your seat with an inline fuse.

Plus if you do the HD-Dude Aux in mod to your radio, there is a connector on the cradle that will allow direct input to the radio...better than the FM Transmitter by far!

Plus if you do the HD-Dude Aux in mod to your radio, there is a connector on the cradle that will allow direct input to the radio...better than the FM Transmitter by far!

/Bill
I'm already nervous [smiley=nervous.gif] enough at the thought of removing the tank to get these wires for power under it, now you talking about opening up the radio and using a soldering iron. Remember now this is the guy w/all thumbs, and his tool box consists of screwdriver, pliers, and "BFH". ;D Maybe the use of the front "Aux" jack would be a better choice for me. :-?

There is power in the fairing that would be fine for this!

For real guys...wiring under the tank is not difficult.  You can take a wire coat hanger and stretch it out and pull the cable through no problem.  You only have to undo one screw at the base of the tank.  Then you rotate the tank up.  You don't have to remove it.  This allows access to wiring into the acc. switch.

I hard wired mine (2610) into the Aux plug which required running the wiring into the faring from the mount (this is where I bunched up the excess wire) then back out and under the Tank Cap (easily lifts off the tank) then "down under" the seat to the Aux Plug.  Most difficult part was attaching the male plug (HD Part) to the end of my GPS wire harness.
End result, my connector is not always "live" as if I had connected to the spare leads next to the head lamp inside the faring.  I must turn on my Aux power to power up the GPS when it is attached.  I have already misplaced the little plastic cap that covers the connector when the GPS is not mounted and did not want to risk shorting out the plug it were hard wired and "unswitched".

I will try to take a few pics, but I followed the instructions from another post and did not even drop a tool on my Tank! [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]  (known for my not-so-nimble fingers!)

Right after I purchased the 2610, they announced the ZUMO... Oh well... I certainly do not need two GPS units. (That's my wife talking)

I'm not sure what they have going on...My CC already got charged the $739, and no tax or shipping.  So I know I got it for that.  Maybe that was a pre-release special.  Dunno guys.  Either way, it shouldn't cost much more than that anywhere.  Newegg?  Excellent company to buy from.  I've built 4 computers from their parts.  Easy to order from and track orders.

I'm not trying to start anything. Just everytime someone get's a good price I try to get in on I never get the same price. :'(

I need to get some items for the ride to Nelson and this is one. I have the 2620 so I can use it but thought this might be an upgrade. I've had the 2620 about 3 years I think and these new gps have some nice features.

Just ordered mine [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif].  Should be here in 3 business days.  Ordered from GPS Central in Calgary, Alberta for $909.00 Canadian.  Imagine that, the Canadian unit cheaper than the $US unit [smiley=nixweiss.gif].  Must be a "Free-Trade" thing.

I figure if I am going to be leading you crazy #^%$## around Nelson, B.C., one of us better know where the hell we are going.  RIGHT ANDY!!!

Too true sir, too true.  Even though it is an old ad slogan it has resonance.  And really we don't need to join the ranks of the convinced to know this.  After all, how many times have we just started out to go "that-a-way" and found as our best riding companion for the day that guy that shows up for an hour or so very early or late in the day that rides just off your front quarter as the sun is rising or setting behind you.

I'm with you on this one. My trip planning usually consists of figuring out what area would be nice to go to, looking at a map to find the "dotted scenic roads", riding until dusk and find a motel. The next day do the same thing. It's kinda nice not knowing where you're headed and who you're gonna meet. You go where you want and stop when and where you want. Been doing it that way for 30+ years. It works for me. Hoist!

We share an SOP for travel Hoist.  If something looks interesting, amusing or photo worthy along the way then waste a little time on it.  In between sit back, feet on teh pegs, enjoy the scenery and feel the bike rumble on.  Stop, refill the tank, and repeat the process.  If there is a specific destination in mind finding the same way there twice in a row usually means a navigational mistake was made or I knew where the closest potty was and really needed to get there.  Aside from that, the trip is the best part.  Getting to the destination is usually just an excuse to turn around have more fun doing the same kind of thing on the way home.

Yeah! Sometimes you go 1 or 2 tanks worth in a day. Sometimes it's 5 or 6 tanks. What happens in between those tanks determines how many you're gonna need! Usually when I head out West, it's 2 days to the Badlands (1800 mi from NYC) and then who knows after that? But sometimes I'll take 4 or 5 days to get to the Smokeys (only 600 mi). On one trip to the Smokeys I never got there! Wound up in Kansas City. Hoist!

Those are the trips I know I've liked best.  Have especially enjoyed the times when either never got where the first plan had been or never had a first plan to begin with.  Sometimes destinations just get in the way of a pleasant state of mind!

Has anyone with one of these in their hot little hands had a chance to play with the XM features yet.  I have already read a post on another site, that the manual is very sketchy when it came to the XM functions.  You also have to buy the damn $300.00 XM antenna to make it work.  I am hoping to kill two birds with one stone with this unit. GPS and XM.
Thanks

I have the XM for my 2730...unfortunately, I have only used it in the car...never did figure out an easily removeable mounting solution for the bike since I need to be able to move it.  Also wish it had a bigger buffer...cuts out under overpasses too often since it is on the dash and not outside.

Has anyone with one of these in their hot little hands had a chance to play with the XM features yet.

Anyone that received their unit got pics of the unit mounted yet? [smiley=nixweiss.gif]  Also, does anyone know if this unit can be mounted to the fairing, like the Quest?   :-/

As of tonight, GPSCRAZY.COM has it for $739 again.  I can't yet recommend them, as mine was supposedly shipped on 11/20, and I just got a tracking number today.  And they suck at returning emails and answering the phone.  So far no complaints from anyone online saying they are fraudulent...just poor service.  Good luck guys.

This place currently selling them for $729.95.  I am very tempted to pull the trigger.  But so far it still sounds like some of the mapping and routing functions aren't any better than were the 28XX and those controls were already dumbed down a bit from the 26XX I'm used to and like.  The overall screen area is apparently also broken up such that the mapping area of the screen is smaller than one might expect from a first glance.  The ability to mate via Bluetooth to a helmet and a phone and link them all together is nice.  As is the potential for the (relatively expensive at $30.00 a month) weather radar onboard.  Just not sure the entire package, with its pros and its cons, is a worthwhile upgrade for the cost though.

Don,

Remember that NEXRAD images may not be possible on the ZUMO...it is a simpler weather function they are describing.  the 376 and 476 I believe have the capability.

Don,
If you didn't have either now which would you choose? Any others that are more up on this stuff can add in also. I'm still trying to figure which is going to be the best bang for my buck. I'm mainly interested in the GPS features (do like the Bluetooth stuff, but mostly wear a half helmet so not really sure if that would be applicable) any of the other feature(s) would be a plus.

d00d...I've got the 2820 which looks the same as the 26xx or 27xx series.  It has all the functions of the Zumo, but of course is shaped differently.  One advantage I see to the 28xx is the screen is wider...personally, I like the wider map, and the data blocks on the right side of the wider display.  The Zumo screen is more "square", which might also have an advantage by showing more of what's ahead instead of what's beside.  The other advantage to the Zumo is the battery backup (even if short lived), so the unit would stay on and operating when the power supply is switched off on the ignition.  On the 26,27, 28xx units, when you switch off the unit goes down, and when you switch back on, it has to boot up again...takes about 30 seconds to a minute, depending on how easy the satellites are found.  One thing I like about both units is the MP3 player...that comes in handy when you want her to talk to you, but listen to music when she's not telling you to turn.  The Bluetooth...even though I do not talk on the phone while riding, I do pair my phone up to the unit....in that way, the unit will still tell me that I have a call, and I can view the call and see if it's important enough to stop and return...rarely the case, as usually it can wait until the next gas stop, if then.  It might let you know if there's some kind of emergency though, and you need to stop...case in point would be a group ride and someone gets lost or goes down...somebody could call you and you'd know what was happening, so you could stop or turn around and help.

The shape of the two units might be something to consider...how it will mount, and how much it will intrude/block the view of the dash...as mine was (before chaning the bars...havn't remounted it yet) it just covered the view of the Air Temp Guage, which we all know is a worthless POS anyway...if I had the Zumo in the same location, it might have obstucted the fuel guage a bit.  Those things can all be accomodated, depending on what mounting system you use.

Now....are you even more confused?  Buying one of these things is like getting a computer...they will always be coming out with something better in 6 months, so waiting gets you nowhere.  I'm happy with my 2820...if I was looking, it would be a toss-up between it and the Zumo.  The thing that would make a difference to me is how they each would mount to the bike's bars.  I would not even consider ever putting a hole in the dash for a mount.  JMO....

Terry,
Thanks that's the type info I'm looking to hear about. One of the features I like about the Zumo is it comes w/the mounts, specifically the clutch/bracket mount. Waiting to see one mounted like that so I can see how well it will be able to see the gauges. If I remember correctly the mounts for the series that you have required the additional purchase of mounts.

That is correct, Gary....the 2xxx series require the purchase of a cradle mount from Garmin...I happen to have a spare, if you decide to go that route.  It also requires the purchase of a mounting bracket...in my case a Tecmount (All Chrome, of course   ;) ), so you can add another 70 to 100 bucks for that part of it.  The clutch mount would not work for me as I have the chrome switch for the Legend shocks there.  I really don't think you could go wrong purchasing either unit.

I purchased my 2820 from this place:  http://www.gpsonsale.com/garmin/products/Zumo.htm   They currently have the Zumo for $739.  I have purchased two units from them (one is a handheld)...quick delivery, and good customer service.  They offer accesories as well.  Check out their site.

Jerry...I'm going to agree that it's fun to just head out and get lost sometimes...but, one thing that saved me on the recent trip to Tampa/West Palm when I got stuck in traffic on I-75, was that it gave me an alternate route, told me to take the next exit, and recalculated the best way to get there.  It was getting dark fast...I would not have enjoyed being "lost" in the 3 hours we spent on the bike after dark with temps in the 40's.  Showing your position in 3D, the road you're on, upcoming curves, towns, knowing the distance to the next turn, etc, proved to be valuable in that circumstance.  I am never without my Atlas to take a look at the "big picture" of where I am and where I'm headed, but the GPS is a good tool to have when you really need it.  When we left Jorge's house in West Palm, I just told it to take me back to Tampa the fastest way...it got me there, again after dark on unfamiliar roads.  I've got pretty good dead reckoning skills in the daylight, but when it gets dark...I prefer not to be riding at all...but when you don't have a choice, it is reassuring to hear the voice telling you it's time to make a turn down to counting the number of feet left till turning.

I'll take that over Diva thumping me in the head for getting us out in BFE in the middle of a Sugar Cane field at 8PM  ;D [smiley=nervous.gif]

D00d, the more I see of and read of the Zumo the less impressed I become.  Not that it isn't nice. As it seems to be. But its claim of being motorcycle specific is more advertising than reality.  Aside from being desiged to be "left handed" the rest is just bunk.  It uses standard car routing methods and doesnt' have a specific "two lane" or rural road preferences one can select.

So, to answer the question, what would I pick today?

If I wanted a really good GPS unit and didn't care anything about anything else other than a really nice mapping unit with a good display and great functions?  I'd save a lot of dollars and get a 2610 on eBay for anywhere from $250.00 to $350.00.  If I wanted that same quality, with a slightly dumb downed interface, still a nice screen, and added function of Bluetooth and the other newer bells and whistles I'd get the Garmin 28XX series.

Gee Don now I don't know if I want one.  I have the Quest and it has been great.  Most of my buddies use the 2670.  Nice unit but I find it a little big and mine does all I need it to do.

I got mine and have been playing with it since yesterday.  SO far I like it and the screen is much nicer than my old 2620.  I got the Harley POI file loaded within about 3 minutes.  So now I have all 900 some Dealerships programmed in....that's pretty sweet.

How do Zumo routing functions compare to 2730 and 2820 units? Are road/area avoidance functions included, will it prioritzie a custom route based on a group of waypoints starting with the closest and work out to the fartherest ones?

Firedood, some thoughts about a GPS;  I really like having the ability to "see" where I am in raltion to the terrain.  I also like being able to see what is ahead on the road.  For example, on our trip to Sturgis this summer, some of the back roads were pretty twisty, and I knew what to expect from the next turn before I got there.  It also is nice know how far it is to the next point or turn.  I have the HD Quest, and am not real impressed with the screen, as far as visibility during bright sun.  I am interested in actually seeing the new Zumo, as it is supposed to be much better in bright sun.  I mounted mine to the inner fairing, but would not do that again. I would rather use the handlebar mount so I could change it out if needed.  I also like being able to plan my routes on the computer, download them to the unit and be ready when I ride.  I think once you have one, you will really enjoy using and having it, and wonder why it took you so long to buy one [smiley=nixweiss.gif]  I think if you wait a little, the price will come down and they will seem more cost effective.  Good luck on your decision, and let us know what you decide to do. Thanks for the info. I'm for sure will not be mounting it to the fairing. It will be the handlebar clamp or the clutch bracket. I couldn't bring myself to put holes in the fairing. [smiley=nervous.gif] Wanted to see the clutch bracket mount to see if that was less noticeable when GPS not mounted, and to see if it would be in the way when mounted. Either way hopefully this will happen before next riding season. I'm going to be out of commission for several months (hip replacement) after the first of year so hopefully the prices will have come down some, and more feedback will be available.

In doing a comparison between the Zumo and the 2820 on Garmin's website I notice that the basemaps are different with the 2820 apparently having more detail.

The 2820 has a "Americas Autoroute" basemap and the Zumo has a "Americas Lite Routable" basemap. When clicking on them for descriptions it shows considerably more detail available for 2820 maps. In practice I'm not sure how much difference that makes but it could be significant?

I am about to go to another state to scout lakefront property and a GPS is vital. Apparently the Zumo is specifically lacking in detail with lake areas and I wonder what else for those of us that want a GPS to use on two wheels and four?

This coupled with no control of the route autorecalculate, lack of some avoidances, poor detour function and waypoint screen clutter may be a deal killer for me.

I'm also concerned that the route auto-recalculate function may apparently take over and modify Mapsource routes with no option to stop that, this is something I can't live with. What would be the point of even using Mapsource to generate custom (scenic) routes if this is the case?

Over the last 7 years I have accummulated more than 500 waypoints, the Zumo is limited to 500, the 2820 holds 2000.

So in the end the 2820 may be the better unit for two AND four wheel use, the Zumo is probably better for motorcycles, tough call?

This is all too bad because I thought I really wanted a Zumo

That was yet more of the differences in the Zumo the keep me wary of it.  Neat package on the outside.  But the more I find out the less excited about the thing I get.  Just seems that it's going to have to a real bargain compared to a 2820 to justify the things it does not compared to what the 2820 will do.  Just saying the word "motorcyle" in relation to the device is not enough to make it cost more.  Or at least it shouldn't be.

For any of you keeping track, Garmin has been listening, and has drastically fixed some issues with the Zumo.  Make sure you update ur software.  They even have an altimeter programmed in, for those fun mountain rides.  And a permanent compass.  Check out the improvements!

 Change History

Changes made from version 3.00 to 3.10:

    * Corrected unit shutdown related to map drawing.
    * Corrected position of the traffic alert button on main map.
    * Pause trip computer time update in charge mode (automotive mount).

Changes made from version 2.50 to 3.00:

    * Allow panning from main map. Touching vehicle on main map displays coordinates and elevation in save dialog.
    * Added more fields to the trip computer including fuel gauge odometer.
    * Enabled compass display full time with additional data fields.
    * Enhanced XM weather support which is available from XM button on the main menu.
    * Enhanced traffic incident reporting.
    * Added support for SDHC cards and increased MP3 playlist limit to 1000 songs.
    * Added Audible books support.
    * Added option to limit BT headset audio to phone only.
    * Added option to display track log on map.
    * Added track log archive function.
    * Modified import /share pictures to work directly from jpeg viewer without the checklist.
    * Added support for the modified drawing styles present in certain specialty maps.
    * Display unpaved roads differently than alleys, expanded zoom level where favorites are displayed.
    * Disables auto-zoom operation when off-road.
    * Added ability to treat certain route vias as shaping points which will not be flagged or announced. Qualified shaping points are Intersections and points on roads which are not addresses, such as I-35N or HwyA. Requires routes to be created with MapSource 6.12.1 or using the zumo route planner.
    * Enhanced off-route recalculation for mixed on/off road routes and routes with shaping points.
    * Added support for new Pre-Recorded voices for Brazil, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Romania, Serbia.
    * Updated US/Canada Daylight Saving time support.
    * Correct shutdown when enter more than 4 vias.
    * Correct issue preventing conversion of tracks to routes in southern hemisphere.
    * Correct issue which prevented writing recent tracks to the GPX file.
    * Correct issue which prevented finding points of interest after search where city was spelled.
    * Correct issue which prevented finding some addresses with overlapping maps.
    * Correct issue where a truncated route could contain an erroneous point.
    * Correct issue where a truncated route could be stopped incorrectly.
    * Correct behavior when two Cyclops safety cameras are in range.
    * Correct handling of track to route conversions that are completely off road.
    * Correct issues with simulator going off route.

Changes made from version 2.30 to 2.50:

    * Correct issue with mount detection logic when power is briefly interrupted.
    * Correct issue where SiRF chip cannot lock on after firmware update.
    * Correct issue when selecting a GPI point from the review map for a route.
    * Correct shutdown when displaying some banner messages in Italian/Spanish.
    * Correct issue with overlapping points in tour guide feature.
    * Correct issue with drawing the avoidances options page.
    * Use Locale setting to select American/European style traffic icons.

Doc,

Can you explain the process to update my system.  I think I know how to check for the current version on my system, but wouldn't mind a refresher about how to update.  Thanks for the heads up.  The one thing I was missing was the altitude that was on my Quest, but now that that is avialable, I'm a very happy camper.  Thanks again

HH, Garmin makes this easy.  Plug the little beastie in to your computer and run Garmin's "WebUpdater."  All the necessary guidance is here:

Yup, plug it in and run Webupdater like TwoLane said.  It's so simple.  I'm also glad for the altimeter.  I called them and asked about it, and they said that it would require more than programming, so it wouldn't happen.  Duh.  I knew that was BS.  Apparently enough people called that they did it.  Ride on!

Guys,

Thanks for the help.  I can't wait to get my little Zumo updated.  It was very interesting on my trip out to Sturgis to know what the altitude was in the area we were traveling.  To most who would think it was a no brainer, think about traveling for miles and miles in high desert; you never really get the feeling of where you are altitude wise.  GREAT UPDATE, and one thing is for sure; Garmin does tend to listen to their customers! :huepfenjump3:

Now you're going to want to get a bluetooth lid so the music and GPS can be wirelessly surrounding your noggin.
funny you should mention that.....

bluetooth phones are also in my future....
just need to find a freakin earpiece thingy that will talk to more than 1 at a time..( i carry 4 phones most of the time)

got the 2820 last night...  threw it on the dash of my pickup in the portable stand...  very easy to use, took me like 4 seconds to set it up...  i really like the way it adjusts brightness and switches to nite mode
too cool for school! :2vrolijk_21:
so far i like it...
i hope to have the mount in today ....  and...
when the red bike comes home from its 10k service...  ( its ready, the roads aren't) i can get cracking on riding with this cool gizmo

Well, I updated my Zumo last night...piece of cake :orange:  I'm thrilled to have the altitude again.  Now my Zumo has everything my Quest had and is easier to use, and see.  I'm just waiting for my next trip to really get my use out of it.  Highly recommend this little jewel.  Thanks again to the brothers here who provide all the great assistance.  :2vrolijk_21:

Just got the Zumo 550 last week and installed it in my car.  I did try it with the included mounts on the clutch side of my Road Kings handlebars.  I have ordered a handlebar clamp to fit my 1.25" diameter handlebars.  I love the GPS.  I have used the the Magellan 750 as installed in Hertz rental cars and I have a Magellan Map 330 handheld that was nice when nothing better was readily available for my bike.  The only thing I see that I liked on the Magellan 750 that doesn't seem to be included with the Zumo is the little icon that tells you the direction of the next turn.  I ordered a car weighted dash mount so that I won't have to worry about it falling off of the windshield.  I have wired the harness to the bike and should get the new bike clamp any day.  This is a great unit, I am so glad I waited.  Navigating on a bike is hard for me, I usually print out the map from Mapquest and fold it so that I can pull it out and only see the information that I absolutely need.  If I have a passenger, I usually get them to hold the directions and read out lines as needed.  The Zumo appears to be just what the doctor ordered for bike navigation and since my company won't pay for a GPS when I am renting a car on business trips, I plan to bring it along.

Amen!  I agree whole-heartedly.  Anyone know if they allow you to take these on a plane?  I figured with the battery backup, it would be cool to watch the trip.  I know, it's off-topic.  Sorry!

OK.  Usually I'd be one of the guys to answer this, but i haven't found anything yet.

On the car mount for the Zumo, there is a USB connector on one side.  The auto mount uses its own power cable, which turns on the audio speaker (which by the way, works as a speakerphone without a headset - I found this out by accident).  So my question is....has anyone found a use for the USB connector?  I plugged it into a cell phone charger and that didn't do anything.  Maybe it's for data if you don't want to take the Zumo out of the car to transfer but that seems dumb.  Thanks for any info in advance!

The optional antenna, charger and data cable all use the mini USB connector.

OK...I finally got everything mounted, using my old RAM mount that I had mounted to the handlebar for the 2620.  I love it, and it wired in beautifully.  Sound quality is great!  It nicely interrupts the 4GB of MP3s that I installed with directions.  No whining like wiring in the audio on the 2620.  Nice unit!  I look forward to getting it out on the road (Salt is just disappearing from rain, woo hoo!)

I was looking around and planning on getting a zumo 550, I stumbled on this in my travels. http://razorbiker.com/zumo/viewtopic.php?t=339

Besure you get an extended warrenty on your unit. It might just be the rush (MFG) to fill the market .

I also Copied this Connection info from the same site:

FYI the site for the zumo forum has grown so fast, that they now have a new web site.

http://www.zumoforums.com/zumo/

Lots of good info on the site if anyone is thinking about the Zumo 550

Enjoy, John
