Where would you go?
« on: October 18, 2006, 02:13:06 PM »

I may be relocating and was wondering "Where would you go?", If you could relocate to anywhere in the US what state would it be? I've only lived in the Northeast, I've traveled around the country and I'm curious to hear what everybody thinks.

Thanks,
Ed

Ed,
That's to easy..... You ride a scooter, move somewhere it's warmer longer during the year (but still has all four seasons), it has mountains and twisties to ride on, and yearly rain is average to minimal. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] When you find out where that place is let us all know. ;D

Ed,  If I still had to work, but wanted a decent climate, Oregon would be in my top 3.  Other choices would be Southern Colorado, Northern New Mexico, or the Southeastern US (Northern half of AL, Tenn from Nashville east, Western NC, or North Georgia)  Forget about Florida (no offense guys from FL) unless it's the Panhandle.  Atlanta is just too damn big for my tastes.  Nashville is very nice and large enough, but not too large.  Birmingham is a great place to live too...once people come here, they don't leave.  Asheville, NC is beautiful and eclectic in it's demographics.

From Eugene to Portland Oregon is probably one of most beautiful places I've ever seen...great coastline, mountains, etc, all within 50 miles.

If you don't mind some hot weather in July/August, come on down here...4 hours from the mountains, and four hours from the beach. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

I have to put my 2 cents in;
These areas have all left great impressions on me, in fact at one time or another, after visiting all of these areas, I told my wife we would eventually move to all of these.
1. Durango, CO
2. Ashville, NC
3. Franklin, TN
4. Greenville, SC
5. Sedona, AZ

Other choices would be Southern Colorado, Northern New Mexico,...

Ditto that.  Anywhere from Taos to Durango would suit me fine.  Check out Red River, Cimarron, and Las Vegas (NM, not NV) while you're at it.  And swing over to Cortez, CO to the west and Walsenberg, CO to the east.  Still gets cold in the winter, though.

...or the Southeastern US (Northern half of AL, Tenn from Nashville east, Western NC, or North Georgia)

Can't go wrong with any of that.  A caveat:  Atlanta's sprawl is rapidly making what used to the N. GA mountains into bedroom communities--be ready for more traffic and development than maybe you think.  People commute to the northern suburbs from Dahlonega, Jasper, and Elijay.  And better hurry about Western NC.  It's being bought up fast by folks fleeing Florida.

I'm looking to move to the Ellijay area. I love it up there. Maybe not in the town but in that area.

Uh...yea Ed...don't you know that everyone down here lives in a trailer park, wears wife beater shirts, dips snuff (the women too), and has a total of 10 teeth per family of four?  Don't you ever watch the news after a tornado has come through...that's what we're all like.  That's the ticket....oh, and I forgot to tell you that everyone here has a German Shephard and a fire hose...and we wear pointy hats....

If you are ever in Austin Texas, go 75 miles west and check out the area around Fredericksberg, Texas.  Beautiful scenry and country roads, long riding season, but it does get hot in July and August.  If you are still working, you could work/live in Austin and start working on a place to retire near Fredericksberg.

I've got to agree with what the guys have said, I've lived in both Nashville and Franklin and they're HORRIBLE places to live, so even consider it!!  ::)
Just kidding of course.

SD has 3 weather reports each evening.  Coastal, mountains and desert.  I refer only to coastal.  Summer average mid to upper 70's  Winter ave mid to upper 60's.   Check the weather underground website for historical weather info including rainfall.  Seasons are more subtle but do exist.

Sedona Az , another spot suggested, is drop dead gorgeous.  Summer around 90-100 winter 50-75.

What about Charlestown SC. 4 hours to the mountains, you are already on the coast, back roads have not been too developed yet.

I guess I should be more grateful for Sacramento.  At 30 feet above sea level, we're only an hour and a half from elevations over 7,000 feet.  The ocean is an hour and a half away.  We have the Sacramento and American River for boating, a large number of lakes within an hour drive.  Temps. range from freezing in the winter to 110-112 in the summer.  Places like Yosemite National Park, Napa Valley, the California Redwoods and Lake Tahoe all within two hours.

The down side of course, as with all of Calif, is the cost of living.  Homes are starting to depreciate a little (so we're loosing some of that 100% appreciation that we gained over the past three years) so if you hurry........you might find a very small house for under half a million. You are indeed fortunate to have those beautiful things around you, JC.  But half a mil for a house smaller than I have (and mine is modest) is out of my league, buddy!  So I guess I'll stay here for another 5 years, then see where things take me.  Hope to make it out your way in the next year or so though....

Ed...lot's of good recommendations here...with all the friends you've made, you could probably just take a month or so and travel around checking all the places out, with free places to crash for a night or two.  If you can put up with a pony in the house (my 90 lb Greyhound), you're welcome in Birmingham for as long as you need.  I might even have a couple of connections for job possibilities... ;)

Don't know anything about the area, just happened to be checking out one of the sellers I deal with on eBay and they had this listed also - Majestic Mountaintop Estate Just 15 Minutes From Reno!

"Nestled on top its own mountain, surrounded by nearly 80 acres this 3700+/- square foot home is the ULTIMATE in privacy and luxury. Featuring three Master Suites, two with jetted tubs you can indulge in the finer things in life. The gourmet kitchen boasts three subzero refrigerators, a Wolf Convection Oven and Stovetop and another Thermador stovetop sure to please any chef! The family area includes soaring 30 foot ceilings, slate flooring all of which is radiantly heated to keep you warm on those cool Reno evenings.

BTW, part of the reason for my prvious post is that I am getting ready to winterize my scoot and it pisses me off to have to put it away until I have no more snow and ice on the road...if it was just an issue of cold...I think I could handle it!!!!

I had a job interview in Colorado Springs about 6 years ago.  Man, I wanted to live there!  But I've got to say, since then I've been there in the winter and it gets cold as heck.  Colder than Denver.  Still, I'd put up with a lot to live in a place like that.  It's growing like crazy, though (as of 6 years ago, anyway).

Speaking of Colorado, Grand Junction would be nice.  It's in a valley at the other side of the Rockies, sort of a banana belt of warmer temps as compared to just a few mile east.  Spectacular scenery, good people, not crowded, reasonable climate, reasonable cost of living, and enough conveniences to make living, well, convenient.

Woops.  There I go.

LIVING ANYWHERE IN COLORADO WOULD BE TERRIBLE. ;) ;) ;)

Yea, but look at the acreage.  I have a friend who has a place in that area (Spanish Springs) and she has about fifteen or twenty acres and her home sits up on a mountain too.  It overlooks all the lights of the city and the casinos, at night and several members of this site have been there, too.  But the land.........nothing is there but rattlesnakes gophers (to keep the snakes alive) and a few homless looking jack rabbits.  No trees, or foilage of any kind that's taller than your ankles. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]  Winter's are miserable cold (all your vehicles are 4x4 or AWD) and you better have a snow plow or blade to put on the front of your truck........windy beyond belief and summers in the triple digits.  Yep, you get all four seasons there. ;D

Funny you mention that, The wife and I are looking for land in the Grand Junction are now...

Yep.  I was in Grand Junction after my Colorado Springs foray.  I got so hooked I even went over to the local elementary and high schools to check them out (I have children).  I still remember the High School principal.  She and her husband had moved there to escape Houston (I was escaping Atlanta) so she totally understood.  I'd have to look at a map to remeber specific area but the downtown was inviting, and housing was reasonable.  Big mountains and snow just to the east, vast desert to the west.  Nice place.  You Colorado guys are lucky.

With a little effort, you could be one of us!!!

Stop, you're killing me. :'(

Alright, I had to go get the map to remember specifics about Grand Junction.  I remember taking a day and driving southeast to Delta, then up through Cedaredge and Mesa, past Powderhorn ski area and back to town through Clifton.  This would be a nice ride.  The pass over Grand Mesa is open rolling forest and field, laced with snowmobile trails.  I also went out to Fruita and took the loop road through Colorado National Monument (beautiful).  Looked at some houses that backed up to the National Monument--talk about a back yard!

Back to Colorado Springs, when I was there the suburbs were going out to Black Forest.  Manitou Springs was really neat and I used to go running in Garden of the Gods and around the lake at the Olympic Park (name?)  I also took in a few Sky Sox games--that's where I discovered how much fun minor league baseball is.

Ahhhhhh, Colorado.

One of my favorite hideouts in the world is Lake City.  Ever hear of it?  One of my classmates in Grad School was a CSU alum from Denver and she hadn't.

And--I asked the wife to marry me on Boreas Pass.

Alright, enough pain already.  Take care of Colorado for me.  I'll get out there again sometime.

Ed,

Ride on down to Ky. and stay with us a while. Short mild winters. Ky. Lake and Barkley Lake 20 minutes away. Camping, fishing, and nice riding. Right between Nashville, St. Louis, and Memphis. Five hours to the Smokies.
Small town feel but not so small that everyone knows your buisness. Slow pace to life and cheap housing. Come visit. "Harley Bama dude" just moved here and is the new sales manager at the local Harley dealership...great group of guys here too!

I agree about western KY.  Wifey's from the eastern part of the state.  Passed through Paducah a while back and really liked the area.  I recently told Bama that he'd done alright by moving there.
