compensator sprocket removal and install
« on: August 28, 2013, 03:23:38 PM »

Are any other special tools needed beside the locking bar to remove my old compensator and install the new update?  My second one is already rattling and driving me crazy with only 7,000 miles on the part. Hope that this new part could be the fix. Willing to try if I can do the job myself. Any tips or warnings?  Thanks.

The newest compensator uses a T70 torx socket (not hex any more)..  When installing the outer parts of the compensator, make sure none of the inner parts slip out of place and lube everyhting up good when installing.  Post some detailed pictures of this new compensator.  Let us know how the glue job comes out on the outer primary cover plastic trowel.

T70 Torx? Well CRAP... my Torx set only goes up to T50. There goes another $25...  :behead:

I wonder if anyone has done an install of the new compensator and the gluing process on You Tube yet.  If not it won't be long before one is.  I can't believe they want us to glue a part in a hot oil bath area, just doesn't sit well.   I saw the new compensator in detail on another forum, small needle bearings along with the glued part will always be on my mind when I'm on a long trip.

I'll still take it over the crazy rattle that comes and goes.  It all started with the installation of the last updated compensator. Just can't deal with the noise. Perhaps this may be the final fix and hold up well.

Anyone else wondering how many torx sockets get rounded off pulling that torque setting?

Hope that mine doesn't round off. Using a new Snap-On high quality product. Should do the job I hope. We will see shortly after parts arrive.

I believe they are talking about the new compensator for 2014 with a T70 torx.

Don, I thought the same thing when I saw the 2014 compensator parts break down.  And I believe the bolt is tapered under the head so oil can nget there.  You have a bar wedged between the sprockets and trying to torque to a pretty high spec with a torx=dumb.

I looked at the instructions regarding the gluing on HTT and looked pretty straight forward.  I would brake clean the area inside the cover really well.  I have confidence in the glue.

I'm not concerned about the potential of good adhesives either Bob.  Some guy's prep though?  Yeah, that would worry me.

The big Torx bolt may be just fine.  But my first thought on seeing it was the mental image of a socket rounded off.  Pulling as much torque as that will take it'd only take a moment of wobble to not have the socket fully seated and straight.  Hope it's ok.  Expect to see a few wrecked sockets.

Hi all,

Just had look at the original rotor from my 07 cvo rk, and compared with the one required for the new HD comp, its quite an easy job just to remove the captive springs and cut off the cup used to hold them, does not have to be perfect as the springs on the new comp sit outside the area you have just cut, don't worry about balancing as the HD comp has never been balanced away, at least that will save anyone going from the factory cvo comp from 2007-2011 to the latest version about $100.
