2014 Infotainment GPS route planning
« on: October 03, 2013, 09:08:48 PM »

Has anyone with the new 6.5 Infotainment system attempted to pre plan a route with Mapsource and then download the GPX file to the new INfotainment system?

Just curious, In the old system you could put in the map cd to use the gps so you couldn't listen to music at the same time. So question is can the new infotainment center run gps and play music at the same time.

The 'infotainment' gps only accepts a total of nine waypoints/shaping points/via points so, no, it won't work.  I've installed my old Zumo 550 on my left handlebar in order to use my custom routes.

I have yet to see a built in GPS system on a vehicle that can compare to the Garmin products, even some of the least expensive versions.

IMO, Garmin is the standard by which all others are measured, and for the life of me I can't understand why vehicle manufacturers do not design their GPS systems in cooperation with Garmin.  It might cost a bit more, but it would be worth it.

Anything would be an improvement over the first attempt by HD at a "built in" GPS, as in the '07/'08 model years, but it doesn't sound like they've done what they should have done with the new system either. It's a shame, as they had the opportunity to do it right.

I would agree to a point.  I picked up a couple of cheaper Garmins for the cars about two years ago.  They have very limited route planning.  I just get the feeling that the feature has not been as widely used as things like finding an address or a restaurant.  My 2013 Ford escape GPS is the same as the Harley in many ways.  I still keep the cheap Garmin on the dash since I like to keep my tracks...but even for that, I could just use a logger like the 1000C mated to my foolography module on my camera.

Note that I say this as someone who truly likes to plan routes at the puter and transfer to the GPS.

That's sad, alright.  You have the highly touted integrated infotainment center on a brand new 2014 Harley, and you're still having to hang a discontinued Garmin product off the handlebar because it has more functionality.  :-\

Sounds like "Project Rushmore" has struck again..... ;D

I personally don't use a GPS....I prefer to roam aimlessly around the countryside..... :huepfenlol2:

You can listen to music while navigating. The music will lower in volume when a turn prompt is spoken.

Only nine?  I can't hardly get out of town with only nine turns, let alone program a route!  I'll stick with my RoadTech 660...it works the way we expect.

It's nine way points, not nine turns.

Makes one wonder if those who tested the GPS function had any clue as to how an average GPS user actually uses a GPS to plan day routes.  Speaks volumes.

Or that product developers came from the auto side of the automotive industry.  Cage drivers use such equipment differently than riders do.

Apparently, the riders they listened to for Project Rushmore weren't really "riders."
