2009 FXSTSSE3 Rear Axle Nut Size
« on: October 23, 2013, 04:57:14 PM »

Does anyone know what the size of the rear axle nut on a 2009 FXSTSSE3?

I've tried several sizes, but have had no success.

So far, I know that a 32mm 6pt or 12 pt socket won't fit.  Neither will a 1 5/16" 12pt socket.

The nut has a black plunger clip inserted in the center, and some of the corners appear rounded off, by design.  Any help is appreciated!

Attaching a picture for reference.

Hi Fish,

How is the project coming along?

In regards to the rear axle nut, it was a question a couple of Dealers could not answer for me, it was a bit of a mystery.  I had to work it out myself through trial and error. The Black plug was a bit of a mystery as well. You can leave it in the nut as you take the nut off the bike..

The answer is a "6 point" (6 sides) 1 5/16" socket, a 12 point socket will not work. You can purchase one of these sockets from any large tool shop that sells tools, sockets e.t.c

The other side of the rear axle requires a 3/4" Hex Key Socket..

I have attached a couple of photo's for you.

Best regards...

If that doesn't work then try a left handed metric crescent wrench. Works every time.   :2vrolijk_21:

Thank you Hogsdownunder and dlaws.  I guess I need to track down a 6pt 1 5/16" socket.  Thanks for the information on the internal hex side too; I wasn't sure what size that was either, other than really fricken' big!

As for my project, it's coming along well.  I've got my bars fully done, all wiring and lines are run.  I need to fill/bleed the front brake and hydraulic clutch.  Most of the other small little things I was planning have been done too.

I need to get the rear tire off so I can pull the splash guard and remove the Power Commander V that the previous owner installed.  Once I'm back to just the stock ECM, I'll be having a custom dyno tune done in the spring, next year.  Weather is getting a bit too cold to really get a great tune.

I decided that since I had my tank off for the bar install and other wiring stuff, it was a good time to install a Shotgun Shock, since the wiring needs to be run to the horn bracket for the switches.

Hopefully that arrives today or tomorrow.

Anyway, thanks again, and I'll get a small build thread posted up once I get everything completed.

$17 and some change, and I've got a 6pt 1 5/16" socket and a 3/4" hex bit socket on the way from Amazon.  Should be here on Saturday....

A worthy investment too, since I plan on changing my own tires on this bike over the years!

Thanks again!

Hi Fish,

Thats great.  Sure is a lot cheaper in the USA than here in Australia to purchase sockets e.t.c.

I look forward to your photo's when you are finished your bike..

Best regards...
