TTS Unlock/divorce?
« on: December 27, 2013, 08:07:06 PM »

I have a TTS tuner that we used for a customers 2010, he sold the bike and wanted to use the tuner on his 2013. My understanding is that tuner is locked to his 2010. Fair enough, not looking to beat TTS out of any pennies. Can TTS divorce this tuner from the 2010 for a nominal fee so we can marry it to his 2013?

The guy that bought the 2010 now has a lame duck tuner? Shouldn't it have gone with the 2010?

I wouldn't have let it go either unless I was getting paid for it..

I would think the 2010 guy has a bike with a tune in it to match his pipes.

:2vrolijk_21:    IMHO the VCI should always go to the new owner when you sell a bike that has been tuned with that type of system.  In the case of a system that "locks" the ECM I would submit that it is mandatory, unless you just enjoy screwing folks over.  My opinion: Tell him to quit being so cheap, go ahead and spend $400 for the new system, and give the old one to the new owner of the old bike.

It's not my call so I'll do as I was asked, ship it out so it can be re-used.

If the buyer makes no changes to the bike he is good to go, if he decides to make future changes to cams etc. then he will have to figure in the cost of a tuner just like modifying a stock bike. If the seller wants to throw in the tuner or make a deal to the second owner to help sell the bike that would be up to the buyer if it is worth it or if they will ever need it.Some guys may never modify it at all. I have always given full disclosure to buyers and give them the option to decide if the extras are worth them paying up or me selling them off separate.

My response to a buyer would be give me an extra $200.00.If you plan on doing further mods you get a deal. If not you just saved money on something you will never need.

How about the original/stock HD tune the original owner downloaded and saved that came with the bike before it got tuned?

If he ever needs to restore the bike to a stock ECM (for a warranty claim) then he would be SOL.  Outside of upgrading the TTS to a dual it is of no use to the original owner.  And since it modified the bike and prevents the new owner from doing a stock ECM recovery it really belongs with the bike.

Since the ECM is the brains of the bike it is not like a set of pipes that someone can go and swap if the choose too.

If someone had just handed me $24,000 for a bike I would not be so cheap as to argue over the $200.

what about in the case of a powervision with a dual tune license?  i had a pv that i had tuned my bike and my wife's bike with.  when i traded it in, i kept the pv and paid dynojet for another license to tune the new bike with.  if i had let it go with my trade, then i would have had to buy a new pv and another second license to tune the wife's bike with.

if the dealer, or the new owner, chose to make any changes to the bike that required a new tune, he could still get the hd tuning device and use that, just as he would have to if the bike were stock.

The difference is TTS locks the ECM to where no other tuning device can access it without first restoring the original MTE. IMO he sold contact the seller and give him the dongle.

Business Ethics 101 would suggest that the buyer of the 2010 be informed of the situation and the "married" tuner be part of the sale or offered as a deal "sweetener" or for additional funds.  NOT providing this information could actually void a sale and possibly place the seller in some legal jeopardy, especially if the seller is a licensed dealer. If the buyer is informed, and does not want the part, he needs to sign a waiver.  That said, if it were me, the part is an integral part of the OS and would be included.

Regarding Charles question, stock maps are easily "flashed" to original by any Harley dealer, but that would only make sense if the bike was returned to original condition.  But ekim's question is a good one, although to remain consistent, I would say (as the seller) the tuner goes with the bike and it would be ekim's responsibility to buy a new PV unit for the new bike and his wife's.

We all have bought and sold stuff, I think we can agree that "honesty and fairness" are things we all expect in a deal for something we are buying. The guy we are selling something to, deserves the same.
