Which compensator cam in the 2012 FLHXS3 ??
« on: May 12, 2014, 02:41:03 PM »

Been looking at parts diagrams online and they all have the newer 2014 parts indicated.

I replace the compensator on my 09 Ultra with what we called the SE compensator.

Anyone know what is in my 2012 CVO?  It's making noise already, 7000 miles.

The 2012 CVO's, as well as all other 2012 Big Twins, came with the 2012 version of the SE compensator.  As you have found, it may have been better than the total POS that came in the 2007 - 2009 CVO's, but it still wasn't very good.  There is a newer version out now that includes an oil diverter to get more oil into the bore, and a needle bearing to replace the old thrust washer.  The jury is still out on that one, since it still doesn't address the lack of lubrication for the actual cam surfaces.  Check some of the existing threads on the site, but get ready for a lot of reading.

Your 2012 CVO does not come with the latest "SE Compensator".  All versions of the SE Compensator from 2007 thru 2013 had the same common basic flaw - complete lack of lubrication to various critical surfaces within the compensator.  The latest SE Compensator has been redesigned in an attempt to direct lubrication to the surfaces in need of lube.  It's an improvement over all previous designs, but I'd not go as far as to say the lubrication issues have been resolved.  That said, if you need to replace your current compensator, it's the best available option.

You'll need to purchase the adhesive to install the oil deflector from an outside source, as the MOCO will no longer sell the adhesive to the public.

This is the most cost effective source I located....

I keep hearing lack of lubrication is the problem with the compensator sprocket, would it be possible that using a different fluid in the primary would correct this? I use Royal Purple ATF in my 1995 with an S&S clutch and 145 hp (this was the recommended fluid by S&S) I am wondering if this might help with the lubrication issues by using it in my 2012, has anyone tried this? Does anyone else make a high performance replacement compensator, like S&S, Baker, Rivera for these newer drives? Is it 100% failure on the compensators or hit and miss.

The lubrication issue is caused by the design of the parts, not the lubricant.  The latest (2014) model compensators have a change that gets more lubricant to one of the critical areas, but the actual sliding cam surfaces still don't get much more than the normal mist that's formed in the chain case by the moving parts.  Check out a product called CompenSaver that claims to solve that problem with a bolt in tray that catches and redirects lubricant to the area.

No one makes a real replacement at this time.  Some companies offer solid sprockets, which you should avoid like the plague.  At this point in time the only real choice is the Harley compensator.

I haven't had one of these apart yet but surely an oil hole or groove in some of the pieces could help put the oil in the right places maybe I should put the oil pump from my lathe in there!!! it appears not a lot of thought or testing went into this design, oops sorry I guess this is the testing phase and we are the testers paying for our own parts, what a great concept that has lasted over 100 years. We have some heavy duty 1000hp electric motors with sealed bearings that the grease doesn't have to be changed for 5 years, I have some of that, I'm thinking it might not be a bad idea to pack it with this grease untill a proper fix comes along. GE D6A 2C4 is the part number for the grease once this stuff is in there it will stay, not your regular grease.

As you've suggested, many have tried modifying the compensator with grooves, oil holes, etc. to improve the access of lubrication to critical areas with no success.  What the latest design MOCO compensator and the Compensavor attempt to do is direct the lubrication to the high wear areas.
