WHY AREN'T BLOWERS MORE POPULAR ON HARLEYS?
« on: May 16, 2014, 10:04:55 AM »

I have and do run street a street car and lake boat with roots blowers, ran some turbo stuff too. It seems that other than the Pro charger (and they are wonderful, but ugly),there isn't a popular blower for the Harleys. The Magna charger, CAS-4, and others appear in the what's new section of the bike rags, and are never heard from again. Is it lack of easy mounting? The difficulty of driving them? Expense? Lack of design research before marketing? Lack of knowledge on the part of the tuners? I bought a CAS 4 on a whim, (was on a show bike and has no hours on it). Now after thinking about it, I have reservations on the whole deal. Anybody got any experience or insight?  TIMINATOR   :-\

I wouldn't trust the bottom ends Mother Harley provides.

I would bet you will find the weak link very quickly when boost is applied! :o

so my big, fat, rolling sofa can still be slower than a Ninja?  Need speed? BMW 1200s, Hayabusa, Duke 1098s, MV Augusta, etc.  The only blower I want isn't bolted to the engine.

Been running one on the back seat for some time. Very tempermental, always needs tuning.

Nice catch 78, a good looking compact "mini" unit. His quote about looking for "real" power is interesting, but no mention of price, long term testing results, etc. make this an "experimental" product at best, at least for me it is.

I installed a Magnacharger on my carbed 01 Dyna. After sorting thru a summer of misinformation and outright bullchit, I finally managed to get asystem up and working! It involved new J&E 8.5/1 forged pistons, a 42mm Mikuni carb, with a custom cut needle, and a cam change (SE204).
End results was a 95" motor that would run with the big boys, pulled 12 lbs of boost at 6500rpm in high each and every time. $5500 for the charger, $500for pistons, $300 for cams. Not cheap, but a barrel of fun. I especially liked how it would pull harder and harder as revs came up. I also built a air to air intercooler which reduced intake temps by 25-30 degrees.
As a 95", 316 Crane cammed, ported heads, 10.2 cast pistoned, it made 93hp/98t. This comb gave 50+mpg at 75mph.
With the supercharger it pulled out 130hp/130t.
The biggest concession was fuel mileage, which was never better than 30mpg at 70mph. Any faster dropped it lower yet. I ran the sytem for 3 yrs total, never the slightest issue except keeping the tank full of gas. I looked into fuel injection, was quoted 5-6000$$ to convert it. I choose to sell the complete package and buy an S&S T124, which is still here chugging out 126.5/134t after 7yrs.

I have been researching all of the bike blowers and car blowers that I can find info on, and I did notice that with all of the centrifugal units there is little or no gain in torque or HP below 2500-3000 RPM and with the roots or Whipple types you will need to beef up the clutch and sometimes the rest of the drivetrain. I understand now. For the approximate same price as a built, larger crate motor with bigger heads and cam, (usually with a warranty,) I can get more weight, complexity, the same HP and less bottom end torque with a centrifugal, and the same bottom end torque with a positive displacement blower, not have the ability to hide the gains from my insurance company, and not have a warranty on my motor either. Which incidentally was not built to take the HP that it will now make, at least at the top end. The same seems to hold true with all of the bike blower companies. It seems that my 30 years of enjoyment with blown and turbo'ed car and boat engines (cast iron 4-6-and 8 cylinders) doesn't carry over to aluminum bike engines. Any of them...    When my boat insurance company whined (pun intended) about the 8-71 blown 468 BBChevy in my 22' Daytona tunnel boat, I just sold the blower and intercooler and built a 598" motor, which runs on 87 octane regular, makes 788 HP at 5800 RPM, has the stock Mercruiser rocker covers and 375 HP decals on them and is painted Mercruiser black. I did a lot of lake racing with both motors (no speed limits on the lakes here) and beating a blown motor with a stock appearing motor was great fun. Why I didn't think of that sooner about the bike motors eludes me...   TIMINATOR    ;D

I still miss my little 95" Blown engine! There nothing quite like spooling up a supercharger and watching the speedo climb faster and faster as the boost comes on! I have wished at times that I had gone ahead with the fuel injection on this little beast. fwiw twinotter
