Very sorry TC.  Truly.  In some ways it hurts worse than people.  Though it sounds like you're consigned to the fact that Shug is ready to chase those great squirrels and rabbits in the sky that all Greyhounds look forward to I'll still hope for a sudden and miraculous recovery.  Really really sorry about both the dogs man.

Terry and Suzanne,
Sorry to hear about what Shug's going through.  It's always harder when pets get sick, because they don't understand what's wrong, just that they're not feeling well and they can't do the things they like to do.  We've been in this position many times with our babies of the past, and it's never easy.  I hope that Shug makes a miraculous recovery.  All the best and the new babies look like they'll definitely keep your hands full.

Terry,

I am crying with you right now as I am typing this. I am so sorry to hear that Shug is not better and that you are having to go through this.  Whichever decision you have to make today will be the best for Shug and for you.

I think sometimes we take our pets forgranted until something happens to them, then we realize how much joy they bring us. Sorry to hear that Shug isn't any better.

Thanks so much to everyone here for their support, and to those who sent me PM's expressing their sorrow for what has been going on the last few days with Shug.  After a consult with a specialist in California, the only thing left to do was exploratory surgery, and I just could not put the poor guy through that.  Everything that could be done was done, so Shug went to sleep in my arms about an hour ago.  Many, many tears have been shed today knowing that I had to do this, but my buddy let me know this morning that it was time.  I love you Shug, and if there's anything after this, I will see you again.  You will forever live in my heart....

MAY I GO?

May I go now?
Do you think the time is right?
May I say goodbye to pain filled days
and endless lonely nights?

I've lived my life and done my best,
an example tried to be.
So can I take that step beyond
and set my spirit free?

I didn't want to go at first,
I fought with all my might.
But something seems to draw me now
to a warm and loving light.

I want to go. I really do.
It's difficult to stay.
But I will try as best I can
to live just one more day.

To give you time to care for me
and share your love and fears.
I know you're sad and afraid,
because I see your tears.

I'll not be far, I promise that,
and hope you'll always know
that my spirit will be close to you
wherever you may go.

Thank you so for loving me.
You know I love you, too.
That's why it's hard to say goodbye
and end this life with you.

So hold me now just one more time
and let me hear you say,
because you care so much for me,
you'll let me go today.

~ Susan A. Jackson ~

I am so, so sorry Terry.  You did what your heart and mind told you was right, and Shug was very lucky to have you in his life.

Sorry to hear this Terry, it is so hard to do but like you said they kind of let you know when it is time. Even though it doesn't make it any easier. Our thoughts are with you.

Damn Terry.  So sorry.  Have thought about Shug on and off all day long.  Just wondering how you guys were doing.  Really really sorry.

You and Diva need a little time to get better yourselves now.  Play with the new puppies.  Let the bird terrorize a stranger if you're looking for entertainment.  But take a little time for yourselves to get your heads back in a good place.

Know friends are thinking of you and wishing you well.  Love to all of you; even the damned bird.

Terry and Suzanne,
I am so sorry with what both of you had to go through over the last few weeks. You did what Shug would have told you to do if he could have. You gave him shelter and love, what more do any of us really need.

Take care my friends, love to you both,
Ed & Donna

It breaks my heart every time I read this last line, reminding me of my own best friend.

...And, master, when I am very old, if the Great Master sees fit to deprive me of my health and sight, do not turn me away from you.  Rather, take my trusting life gently, and I shall leave you, knowing with the last breath I draw, my fate was always safest in your hands.

Terry & Suzanne,   I haven't  wanted to look at this thread because it makes me so sad, I am so very sorry that that Shug had to go I am really struggling with this same decision my Bobbie is not any better and I know I should let him go. I hope your hearts heal fast and I know you did the right thing. I hope I can get the strength to do the same thing.
