Red...really sorry to hear about this.  She was a fine looking dog, and I know it is heartbreaking for you and the rest of your family.

Take care, buddy...

hey yall, hate to break up the party, but thought this important.

if you live in the southeast, beware the eastern diamond back. i am from louisiana and there are timber rattlers that are over 8 ft long, mocassins, copperheads etc: have never lost a dog to snake bite, nor known anyone that has-------the dog just swells and looks goofy for a few days.

until now. my american pit bull terrier, Ellie Mae Clampett, died. vet said no dobt she was bitten by the eastern diamondback. seems this snakes toxins are different. all muscle was a bad thing, he said she had no fat or loose skin so the strike was an imediate full dose.

henry has seen the results of this particular bloodline and would probably guess like i did--that a 30-06 wouldnt bring one down. WRONG!!!!!!!!! these are very dangerous snakes.

anyway, hoping i can save at one dogs life and lots of human tears if anyone in the southeast reads this.

I'm so sorry about the loss of your beloved Ellie Mae.

"Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to
someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are
meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they
can run and play together. There is plenty of food,
water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and
                        comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to
health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made
whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our
dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy
and content, except for one small thing; they each miss
someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when
one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. Her
bright eyes are intent; Her eager body quivers. Suddenly
she begins to run from the group, flying over the green
grass, her legs carrying her faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special
friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous
reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain
upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved
head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of
your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent
                        from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together...."

That's a pretty good poem.  Hopefully it will be true when the time comes.  Sitting here catching up on the thread, listening to the radio.  Pirates of the Mississippi "Feed Jake" just came on.  Kind of tough to type at this point.  Tough to understand why life has to take the critters we care about from us when there's no reason.

It is very hard to understand why life has to take the critters from us, but the good thing is that there are more critters to care for.  Terry and I lost two pups within 3 weeks last November.  In December, two 6 month old babies, Tango and Rider, arrived for us to love.  Two weeks ago Matrix found his way into Terry's heart, and  now we have him to love as well.  Three dogs and one bird reside at the Crain household.  They all provide lots of daily smiles for us.   :)

Red, I am so sorry for your loss of Ellie.  Snake bite eh? I never would have guessed, and I know we have a lot of snakes in our back 80 - 200 +- acres.  Not ours, but we  back up to it.
