Air Cleaner Cover Choices--There is a Poll
« on: December 11, 2006, 04:48:20 PM »

Check out the following three images.  Decide which one you'd wear on it were it your bike.  Place your opinion on the poll.  Feel free to voice it in a post also.  All opinions gladly read.  Mine, of course, will in the end be the only one that matters.  Since mine is still in formation, however, feel free to offer voice (text).

Here is the painted lid that has been on it for awhile:

For what it's worth my own initial impression are as follows:

While I've never liked an open element air cleaner on any vehicle destined for the open road I have a surprising fondness for just the lid.

This may be the first and only time I'm going to vote for "smaller is better". :o [smiley=nixweiss.gif] I do like the look of just the center section of A/C with the entire diamond cut/powder coat you have going on. Since the above bolts/covers/attachments are concerning you I'm sure you can find some way to have them chromed/covered/what have you so you can make this work. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Your flamed lid looked great with the stock cylinders.  I think it is too busy with the diamond cut heads/cylinders.  I would do the full chrome cover with some more red in the cover somehow/somewhere.  The open element looks ok but not rider friendly.  Don't be mad at me, but I was hoping you were going to do something with the flamed air cleaner as everything else looks so great since the diamond cut/color.

IMHO flamed looks to busy and greatly takes away from the real beauty of the bike, the diamond cut & red b/g. from those three choices, I'd go with the stock. BUT I'd keep looking for something to really compliment the real beauty not conflict with it.

I have to go with the small cover although it isn't the most functional as you point out.

The painted cover doesn't work with the new look engine and the stock full cleaner looks too bulky.

However, if you look at d00d's picture, you wouldn't see the a/c when riding nor would someone seeing you riding.  I guess it's aesthetics vs functionality here.

Voted for the small one.

OK, TwoLane.  You're dead-on with your analysis.  I've always been on a quest for a pleasing air stack for the harley V-Twin motor.  Ran no air cleaner on my knucklehead chopper for 19 years while looking for something that wouldn't be ugly and cover too much of the beautiful motor.  The smaller the better (visually) which goes against everything (other than velocity stacks) that is available.  I've got some of the same ugly plumbing on my intake assembly so if you find some answer (just like the wheel brake disc problem) .... I'll be forever greatfullllll!!!!!!!!  [smiley=znotworthy.gif] har!  [smiley=drink.gif] spyder

I'm going to have to say that I don't particularly care for any of them.  If I HAD to choose between the three, it would honestly be the all chrome football, but that is lacking something on the bottom half of the cover, IMO.  The painted one detracts from the engine too much now, and the little one just doesn't look right either.  With the red motor so finely detailed, I think this may call for a very special cover, with whatever you need to do with the backplate/bolts to make the cover of choice work.  I do not like the exposed element because of the rain issue, plus it would look chitty when it starts getting a little dirty, but not yet needing to be cleaned.

You asked...I voted, but with trepidation...

Twolane call Zippers and get the round CHROME air cleaner cover. It looks better than all three posted and you need to add it to the poll. JMHO

Don...Sorry about the pic, but thought you might like to see the carved billet cover from Zippers that might look pretty good with the cut billet on your rocker boxes.

Terry I had thought that also, but somewhere (again the CRS is showing) this was addressed. I know Grover (Mark) runs his like this and he could probably tell/say more on the subject. As for the dirty filter issue.... well remember who's bike this is on... I doubt that would be an issue. ;) ;D

Here is the A/C Cover I believe Dawg is speaking of...

Personally for me that looks more like an EVO cover [smiley=nixweiss.gif], and would cover some of what I think needs to be exposed (DC & PC) [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

I think I remember reading that there is a "sock" you can put on it when it's raining...kind of like a raincoat, or something else I won't mention here.... [smiley=devilish.gif]

I think what bothers me about the pic Don has up is that it is a tapered element...if it was straight, I think it would look better..it'd be a little bigger, but not by much.  The black brackets have to go to the chrome dept.....
