Harley originally intended the new sprocket/comp system the answer for providing smoother shifting and 6 speed tranny by spinning the tranny faster.
The real reason, imho, was to cut costs, the straight splined crankshaft eliminated 14 machining steps alone.  Obtaining compensator parts from overseas with inferior quality metals and hardening proceedures that are at best, suspect, then providing virtually NO oil to the comp parts.
It was first tested on the 06 Dyna models, then incorporated into all in 07. Since 02, HD has constantly downgraded almost every part, going from proven systems to unproven, low quality, and read "cheaper" for HD, results in more profit per unit, shareholders are happy, owners are miserable. For the icing on the cake, HD prefers to hide the faults, disallow warranties and bury the info. They should be ashamed of themselves.  twinotter
HD should quit calling these thing "American Made" and use "American Assembled".

You are on the right track. I can respond informed mainly on the comp. The engineers and machinists we have used tell us the design is good and will do the job it is tasked to accomplish. To do it right would require match matching of the cam and ramps, better hardening and for sure getting it liberally lubricated. The machining that is done leaves some to be desired form the splines on the extension and ID of the cam not matching causing excesses load on the splines that do make contact to the retainer being all over the place. It needs to be balanced given it is many pounds of as cast spinning really fast. It would take less than $50 to do all that in a production volume of this assembly. You are on the mark about the bean counters running to much of the show. So here we are and we will not give up on our Harley's
