Ohlins #6
« on: October 22, 2014, 05:40:04 PM »

I'll be taking the plunge in the very near future and just wanted to solicit your thoughts. I have a 2012 SERG that comes with the 12" premium shocks. I believe the Ohlins will be a touch taller than that (1.75"). Not too concerned about the ride height but will the extra height impact the steering geometry in any way? I am definitely looking forward to a better riding experience. BTW, will be ordering through Howard once he returns from his bike trip. For those of you who've also gone with the Ohlins #6 - any problem connecting the reservoir behind the bags? Thanks in advance!

Same bike, same shocks. Your going to be blown away the difference in the ride, truly night and day difference and worth every dime IMO. You can't even notice the difference in ride height looking at the bike but big difference in clearance in the twisties with scraping boards. Howard will set them up great for you and I will look forward to seeing you post up after putting some miles on them. It will be like a different bike (especially if you ride hard.).

I went with the Ohlin HD 159 shocks on my 15 CVO Uttra.  Wow, huge improvement.  Set at 13 inches just like stock.  Like them so much thinking hard when my wallet recovers to getting them for my CVO King or maybe going up one model to the remote reservoir shocks.

Great  hear, thanks! I'll post once the project gets underway. Doubtful I'll get to try them out before next year as I live in beautiful New England. I'll spend my time staring at them on the bike in the garage and wishing for Spring!

I also have Howards # 6 on my 14 CVO limited,      Still going thru the break in period 250 miles to go.    I could tell first ride out the improvment.    Now,   They are set up for 70 (2 up) 30 single.   riding single it rides ruff...  be glad when broken in and i can start dialing them in...
I had to reinvent the brackets to mount the reservoirs as the 14 does not have a round support to mount to, its more of a bracket..

That is a huge amount of preload you have on those shocks. I also have Ohlins shocks and my preload position, after I adjusted them, was about an inch or so from the top.

I have put 24000 miles on mine and have also lost 165 lbs since I got them so I sent them back to Howard and he completely rebuilt them with the appropriate springs for my new weight and entirely new everything. Just got them back today and they look absolutely brand new. Howard did it for me only charging me for the parts which was very cool of him and unexpected on my part. I was only able to take 1 ride while Howard had my Ohlins and I put the stock CVO shocks back on but I had forgot what a huge difference the ride is between them and the Ohlins. Don't think I will ever have a bike without them again!

So, OK, the Ohlins are on  :pineapple: and we have two days of good old NE weather so not conducive to giving them a work out. Glad to share my thoughts ... just so you know, I have very limited mechanical ability and a useless set of tools. On the plus side, I have a very smart wife!

~ Product: received very well packaged including instructions. They look great and too bad the saddle bags will hide them
~ Howard's extras: Emails you detailed instructions over and above the Ohlin instructions including what tools you should have on hand. Explains set-up and theory on how shocks work. He also includes in the box all the various nuts, bolts, brackets, tie wraps, spacers, etc., that you will need for the install. Wants to be on the phone with you during the install, and in my opinion, you should definitely take him up on the offer.
~ Things I needed to buy: aforementioned J&S jack (or whatever jack you choose) - J&S is an easy-to-use jack and once you get past the bike tipping onto and off the jack (very scary) works as advertised. Check out their video on youtube. I also had to buy an electric cutting tool (for removing a bracket on the left-side saddlebag support) and a longish measuring caliper - both bought at Harbor Freight and very inexpensive. I had on hand, believe it or not, a pretty good selection of wrenches, ratchets and even a fairly good Torque wrench. I also had my wife ready with note paper and pencil to capture Howard's hints and also to take sag measurements while I sat on the bike.
~ A word about Howard: Howard has an abundance of patience - he spent most of Friday on the phone with us and then another half day Saturday to set up the shocks. Spent enough time with us so we had a good understanding of sag, compression and rebound and how important it is to check your settings after riding until you get the right combination of settings that feel good to you. I found him to have a good sense of humor and could take it as well as give it out. He knows his stuff and is most concerned that you are happy with your purchase. I know I can call him at anytime should I have any questions or concerns. "nuff said - he's a good guy"
~ Difficulties: The only part that I was concerned about was the mounting of the canister on the left side of the bike. I have a FLTRXSE (the rear lights are installed on the skirt between the fender and the saddlebag) and on the left side there is not enough room to mount the bracket that holds the canister. That's the reason I needed a cutting tool. I had to cut through the weld of the bracket on the saddlebag that is designed to attach bad guard surrounds. First time using a cutting tool and I set the dogs blanket on fire - I was using the blanket to protect my bike - not a good thing. I owe our dogs a new blanket!
~ Conclusion: Anyone with rudimentary skills (or none) can do this job. I would not attempt to do it, however, without the help, coaching, and swearing that Howard heaped on me - he taught me a lot including to have more faith in my skills. Little does he know! So here are some pics of the final product - the weather is supposed to be up to 60 degrees Wednesday so I'll give them their first run then.
First two pics are right side - the side you can use the mounting bracket to attach the canister.

Thanks guys! Quick follow up - nice day today so took the bike out for a 15 mile run to test the shocks. Fantastic! Felt good, handles great and a lot more comfortable on our NE roads. Tried to avoid the big holes in the road so as not tho through off the settings - just trying to get a feel for it. One thing I noticed that's going to cost me more $ in the future - when the front wheel hit a moderate road imperfection I felt the impact - but felt no impact on the rear wheel ... hmmmm, can you say Ohlins springs? Maybe next year ....

Who is Howard?

And I see a market for someone with the skills and knowledge to make up set of billet clamps.

I am also thinking about getting the 6's. I have a 15 SG CVO and looking at these pics gives me concern that the install is not straight forward at all. I do not want to start cutting anything on the bike. Any thoughts or more details would be helpful. Thanks

The removal of the bracket on the left-hand saddlebag support gave me the shivers too but it's actually not a big deal. Firstly, if you don't have or plan to install bag protectors (ones that surround the bags front to rear) you don't need the bracket. After I did it my way, I was told that all you need to do is score the bracket weld from behind, then use vice grips to bend it back and forth until it comes off. BTW, it can always be welded back on if needed when you sell the bike and want to remove the Ohlins. It has to be done though to fit the Ohlins canister unless you want to mount them to your tourpak. There are probably other ways to do it so just do a search on Ohlins 6.

Skills I have, knowledge is subjective. With a little more detailed info I know we can make the clamps; I am a mechanical engineer and own a contract design and manufacturing company. How large is the market though for mounting $2K shocks?

Well, keep in mind these Ohlins are used on many, many bikes besides HDs so the market might be quite large. Of course balancing that with the fact that all makes of bikes come in all shapes and sizes. These shocks are used extensively on race bikes, BMWs, Ducatis, etc. BTW, discount offered thru RoadGlide.org (if you were a member) is quite significant and brings them well below the $2k mrk.

I had to reinvent the brackets to mount the reservoirs as the 14 does not have a round support to mount to, its more of a bracket..

can you please describe more as what you had to do to reinvest the brackets.  I have a 15 SG CVO and trying to determine what needs to be done and if it is within my skillset. Thanks

Drilling new  holes on the brakets provided.  Turn them upside down and they favor a little more towards the inside of the mounting bracket.  Nvr hits tires etc.   take your time and plan it out. Not complicated.   They are great shocks so far.

T/A - thanks for the description.  That helps.  I have been traveling all week. when I get home I am going to take the bags off so I can see what I am dealing with.  I did not realize that Howard sends brackets with the shocks.  Thanks again.

Are the Ohlins 6 height adjustable, or does Howard send them at a fixed length predetermined by your inseam lenght?

I had to adjust them (shorten) by about 1" so they fit. Loosen blue nut on the bottom of the shock and turn bottom of shock. My bike came with 12" shocks.

Ripcord, so if your bike came with 12" shocks, you lowered them to,.....11"?

No - I think the Ohlins #6 are something like 13 and 1/4" eye to eye. I was on with Howard during the install and could not get them to mount - the eyes and the holes they mount in could not be made to line up - the swing arm would not drop any lower because the exhaust interfered with the swing arm bolt. With the adjustment mentioned above, I was able to get them to line up and I could bolt them to the holes. I still have 13" eye-to-eye but frankly, I'm not sure why that is - so I gained roughly an inch. The stock shocks, HD premium hand adjustable were 12" eye-to-eye with no length adjustment. I'm leaving this morning for a trip to VT but when I get back I'll take a few close-up pics of the shock and where I had to make the height adjustment. Looking on Howard's site, I don't see the adjustment (blue nut) that I have on mine. Stay tuned until the end of the week.

Thanks Ripcord, I am close to buying a set and am trying to learn as much as I can. My issue is passanger comfort. Even with Suspension Technology shocks, my wife still gets jarred over the lousy streets around here. I want something to really smooth out the ride for her. The bike was lowered when I bought it and now I drag in corners, parking lots and the frame hits on speed bumps. I would gladly raise it if it helps, that's why I asked about height adjustability. Look forward to the end of the week.

How I made the length adjustment as asked by Ironhorse.

The blue nut in the picture allows you to lengthen or shorten the shock - simply release it and then screw in or out the eye of the shock. In my case I had to screw it in about an inch to get the shock to fit the bike. On the ground, the shock measures 12.5" eye-to-eye. Stock was 12".

Will do Ripcord!

Howard says that when installed, while parked the bike sits at stock height, 13.25". When I climb on, it will "sag", or drop to 12" and ride at 12. Does yours do that too?

I ask because my current set up uses 12" shocks and I scrape. I've raised my floorboards to the upper most setting, and taken off the spacer kit the previous owner used. Still, when I corner I scrape. Grinding down the floorboards does not bother me, but dragging the EZ-UP Center stand does. I'm afraid that one day it will lever the rear wheel off the payment and I'll go sliding around the corner. This almost happened the other day when I rolled over a pot hole in a corner.

What's been your experience?

I cannot wait for Howard to build them and ship them!

I have mine up on the jack for winter. My bike had the 12 shocks as well. I'll measure later today while it's on the jack. I don't think I'll get over the 13" length though. Will let you know eye-to-eye measurement while it's on the jack. I must not corner aggressively enough - never drag anything on the ground.

Well with the bike on the jack, eye-to-eye is in fact, 13" even.

Ripcord - I've got an FLTRXSE too, but I went ahead and installed the saddlebag guards.  Now, since I'm thinking about installing some Ohlins it appears I'll have to go with the 3-3's since I can't take off the bracket that interferes with the #6 reservoir mounts.  Anybody know of a work-around?

Is that because you added the guards that go around your bags (outside of your bags)? If so, then yes, you'll need the bracket on the left-hand support. If you don't have those then it's no problem to cut that part off.
