EVO at 30,000 miles
« on: October 27, 2014, 05:11:59 PM »

Well, the old Road King with 80" EVO engine rolled over 30k miles this past weekend while cruising the Bankhead National Forest in Winston County, Alabama. She's never been a minute's trouble, never been to the dealer, never even been in a shop, never let me down, still doesn't use a drop of Mobil 1 between changes, smoother than the SERG, must've been built on a Wednesday.  The engine is slightly more noisy than it used to be when she has to pull but on flat ground she's easily the best Harley I've ever owned.  Now, to the question  -  are there some engine internal part(s) I need to check? Sometimes I almost feel guilty not having lifters, chains, runout, compensators, adjusters, etc. to worry about.  Ride her 'til I die?

What year model is it? Late model Evos were almost bombproof. I still miss my '95 FLHTP.

Just do the maintenance recommended in the manual. You don't have to worry about cam chain tensioners, cam plate wear, oil pump failing due to flywheel runout, lifters failing, compensator failing, etc.

If you ever change your cam, be sure to change the cam bearing to a Torrington.

Other than that, just go out and ride it like you STOLE it!

Can't call my EVO bullet proof, but I just can't separate myself from it. The bike runs so nice and it's so comfortable. Had it out for a quick hundred yesterday. Picture of my speedo from this past spring.        JoeS

It's a '94 with mild SE cam, SE (Keihin) carb, Samson exhaust.  Doesn't shake much at idle even with rubber mounts, smooth as silk 55-70 mph.  You know how most engines have a 'sweet' spot?  This bike has a huge one.

Moco service bulletin was issued to the dealers to "inspect and/or replace" the lifters at 25,000 miles.
Keep a watchful eye/ear on those, gentleman, as if/when the bearing generates slop in it, it'll shed the rollers, and all the fun stops then.

Have treated the lifters as a standard service item every 25,000. However, only got 15,000 out of the last set. Had to replace the cam, also. EV-27.     JoeS

Try a set of S&S lifters next time.........that's what we use here, almost daily.

My evo, (127" Ultima) has about 54,000 on it I put S&S lifters in it from new, it's been beat hard it's whole life but still runs great doesn't leak or use oil it's fun riding a 150hp bike. I'm thinking I might put a new set in this winter as it runs a .640 lift cam with heavy springs, not really sure when I should be thinking of a rebuild, probably once it starts using a bit of oil.

Important on an Evo motor to make sure you warm it up good before taking off or you might blow base gaskets. I was told this early on and so far haven't blown one yet since 96.

Traded in my '95 FLHTCU with 98K on it.  Never a problem, other than breaking my heart to give it up for a '13 FLHTCUSE8.  So long, old friend.

My Evo FLSTF hits 20 years in a couple weeks. No major issues at 46,000 miles, and still enjoying the ride.  My RG will walk away from it, though.

Quite true! My old FLHTP Evo developed base gasket leaks, which are quite common in Evos because they didn't use o-rings at the cylinder bases back then... just thin paper gaskets.

Allowing an Evo engine to warm up well before tromping on it is kind to the base gaskets until the cylinders and case warm up and expand enough to provide a good tight seal. Aluminum expands at about twice the rate of steel as it gets hot.

We seen those Evo's in here, even with cam/compression at 145,000 plus miles still rolling along.
Tough engine.
Cometic gaskets keep the oil on the inside.
