Garage door opener
« on: December 11, 2014, 09:34:16 PM »

Did Harley quit putting a garage door opener on the CVO bikes?  In the process of buying a CVO Limited and it looks like you don't get the garage door opener any more.

2014 had one. The bike already has the module installed and you have to plug in and program the garage portion. Takes two people to do it unless you have really long arms or can get the bike close to the part you plug into the outlet.

Dealer couldn't find that there was one, they're going to remove the transmitter from the old bike and put it on the new one.  Just thought it odd that they would quit that program.  Well not really.

Been riding  for 35 years, and only ever owned Harley and I had said that the next bike I bought would not be a Harley but here I am buying another one.  Oh well.

If you are buying a US spec bike, then yes indeed it comes standard with the garage door opener.  The transmitter is installed by Harley at the assembly plant, and the receiver comes in a box with the other loose items.

It definitely has the garage door opener, operated by the flash to pass button on your CVO Limited. Even if they somehow can't find the receiver, the transmitter, as already stated by grc, is installed at the factory. They had placed my receiver in the pouch in the TP.

I am not always sure of some dealers, as I found my '15 CVO with the wrong passenger backrest installed on it, and when I ask why they had put the wrong one on, the salesman told me they had two different ones available. I knew this was not the case, and when walking into the dealership, I noticed my backrest on an Ultra, and pointed it out. He still had no clue, but it was resolved finally, anyway, make sure they check with the service department, since they put the bike together, or at least the parts that had to be put on.

X2 on the back rest my 14 Cvo limited also came with the incorrect backrest, it came with the standard ultra one without the logo and stitching to match, dealer had not noticed either, had it switched over for me, beats me the amount staff across alot of dealerships that really don't know there products, they only stare at them every day and go to countless dealer meetings! My 10year old knows more than them, I kid you not!.
What made me spit is the service manager tried to "diss" it and say "well it's only a badge on it that makes it different" as if I should just accept it. I am sure if it was he who spent £30k on any thing he would want it to be right,  duly I told him so.

2013 rgc cvo doesn't come with garage kit. I myself and the dealer searched bike with faring off. Moco said only the ultras came with. Not the custom.

That is correct.  The same is true on the Electra Glide CVO's, with the garage door opener being standard on the Ultra's (Limited's), but not on the Street Glides.  One of those strange product decisions, and only the folks making that decision have a clue why they did it that way.  Maybe they think the folks with the "sportier styled" models don't have a garage?

Gonna HiJack for a second. But first Yes these come with a Garage door opener. The receiver should be in the tourpack wrapped in red bubblewrap.
Now, could someone show me what the CVO backrest looks like on the 15s? is it supposed to have special stitching? Mine does not.

Not a real clear picture I can try and get a better one once the bike gets here.  By the way they did find the transmitter when they went to put the one of off the old bike on the new one so they are ordering me a new receiver as well.  Be nice to have a spare I guess.

Nice choice on colors. I was talking about the Rider backrest though. If I remember correctly, the receiver for the garage door openers was in the same bag as the cover.

I got one with my 15 SERGU. Has anybody hooked one of these up? I have no idea how to get it to operate. I can follow the HD manual side but have no owners manual for my garage door opener (chamberlain liftmaster professional 1/2 hp) and where its wired does not have any indication of which is which. I can get the HD receiver to recognise my bike and the high/low beam toggle but when I toggle the door does not move. I can only assume I am sticking the wires in the wrong place. I am trying to attach a picture, if someone could tell me which slot the red wire goes in and which slot the red and black wire goes in I would be much appreciative.

Cheers Tom

Got a model number off of it? Tons of manuals found using Google. Once you have the model, I'm sure someone will chime in.

Thanks OBB,

Have looked in manuals and talked to company. Tech SPT never heard of a remote control operated from a motorcycle the way that the HD one is designed. They are going to follow up and get back to me. Fingers crossed they will find someone who has done it or someone from the site will have done it and will post a picture of how they did it so I can stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before.

Go into the vendors section and there is a thread there about chamberlin openers.  He has the solution for around $50 bucks.  I'm a happy customer.

If this is a recent model Chamberlain with the Smart wall control panel (digital display, time/temp/etc), you need to use a different method to make the opener work.  The least expensive way is to run the wires from the Harley receiver to the wall control panel and then solder them to the contacts for the actual open/close switch.  The other is to buy a module mentioned in the thread Panhead Paul posted.

Mine was real easy. I am pretty sure the bike side has the Chamberlin as well with the security plus part. If I recall correctly the wires plug in were the wires from the wall push button go into the opener. When you toggle the passing lights the unit hooped up to the open simply acts like the wall button (I don't recall if it was shorted or open when engaged). I can look closer tonight if you want at exactly which connectors the wires went to.

Which type/model opener do you have?  That is important information that's needed to give you accurate responses.  If you just have a simple pushbutton on the wall, the solution is simple.  If you have the fancy control panel on the wall, simply connecting the Harley wires at the GD power unit won't work.

You do not have to have the wires that go from the receiver to the gdo plugged in to the receiver to program the it to your bike.  Just bring the receiver itself to the bike (I use an extension cord for power) hold it in one hand, press the red program button and flash the bike's light switch to synch the units. Then return the receiver to its usual location and plug the wires going to the gdo.   :2vrolijk_21:

I have the old school push button on the wall type. Had a call from tech support today who told me I just need to put the two wires from the hd receiver in the same two slots on the motor unit as the two wires from the wall unit. This leaves me pretty much where I started I just need to know where to plug the wires into the motor unit. I am upriver at the moment so when I get home I will check the manual again and see if I can find that info.

Tom, I too have the old style push button on the wall for my opener.  When I first installed the receiver unit I mounted it on the ceiling close to the opener as there was 120v power nearby and I hooked the two wires to the opener.  It did not work.  I read somewhere (maybe on this site, can't recall) that you can also run the two wires from the receiver and connect them to the push button on the wall.  I did and it works perfectly.  Might work for you also.

Did Harley quit putting a garage door opener on the CVO bikes?  In the process of buying a CVO Limited and it looks like you don't get the garage door opener any more.

I have a attached a picture of my unit and I will add another post of the the wire connection on the back. It is a little hard to see but the red and brown wires are from the Harley opener.  You can see they are connected in the second from the left side right next to the wall button wires. Red is on the bottom. The other wires on the right side are for the safety sensors to stop the door from closing on pets and kids. Does this look like yours?

I have a attached a picture of my unit and I will add another post of the the wire connection on the back. It is a little hard to see but the red and brown wires are from the Harley opener.  You can see they are connected in the second from the left side right next to the wall button wires. Red is on the bottom. The other wires on the right side are for the safety sensors to stop the door from closing on pets and kids. Does this look like yours?
Thanks very much RonandJanet it looks exactly like mine. I will check when I get home Monday and try and do the same. Will keep you posted.

Spot on RonandJanet. It plugs in the same way and works a treat. Thanks very much. It works just fine off the flash to pass function.

Damn you and your fancy logic! I never thought of using an extension cord! I just had my wife push the red button.  :D
