E3 Bias vs Radias?
« on: June 24, 2007, 08:58:01 PM »

I'm getting ready to replace my tires for my Nelson trip and saw that the Dunlops have radials in addition to the bias tires I have always ran on my scoots.

What are the pros/cons of running the radials over bias?  (handling, max mileage, etc...)

Mark...I don't think they offer a radial for the Ultra.  No 16" sizes that will fit.

Why don't those charts ever show 17" rears for the SERK3? That's what they come with. I haven't seen them aftermarket. Has anyone else seen SERK3 sizes? Do dealers stock them OK? Are these a PIA to find on the road? Just thinking ahead. ;) Hoist! 8)

The rear tire is a D407 170/60R17 78H and it is only available from OEM. I verified with DUNLOP at Daytona.

Thanks Brad, that kinda sucks. The dealers better stock them or we could be screwed on the road. Unless we ship one ahead on long trips.

I agree it will take some careful tire wear management. Don't want to leave home with a questionable tire. I checked with my dealer and they have 1 in stock. The wife's bike has 7,000 miles on it and measure 5.5 MM tread left. I hope to go to Maine and back in July and change tire. The bike will have approx 9,000 miles on it. I don't think it is wearing as good as the MU85 tires wears.

I hear they make ME880's in these sizes and that they ride well on this bike. Any reason not to give up the radials? These seem to handle well and are good in the rain. But so are the 880's. Any thoughts on that? Hoist! 8)

I'm not sure what the radial tires buy us. I currently run ME880's on my 06 RoadGlide and they perform well. That might be an option to switch to ME880's. Most likly I will apply another D407 on the rear on the next tire change. Then switch front and rear on next tire change to ME 880's.

Well, like an idiot, I failed to look up the chart before posting my questions (a buddy of my SWORE they carried these in 16").

I have ran the Metzelers and they really handle well in rain and such but have never got more than 7.5K out of one (rear).  I never cared for the factory tire's rain performance however I got about 9k out of the (rear).  I am now running Avons and handle as good as the Metzelers along with supporting a higher load rating but have a similar mileage life as the Metzs.

I've heard that the E-3s handle like the Avons/Metzs but but have a harder rubber and should last to 10k.

I have probably about 2k left on my rear tire but want to swap both tires out b4 my trip.

You guys with E-3s still like em?

So far no complaints.  Handles rain better than anything I've ever ridden on.  Feels good on normal roads.  Is also wearing very well.

Ok - looked on the site and it looks like I should get the Mt90B16 (4079-90) for the front but which one for the rear MT90B16 (4079-91) or MU90B16 (4079-95).

Looks like the specs are 74H/5.15 max load of 830 and the other is 78H/5.57 with max load of 930.

Any recommendations?
