Day-Maker headlight
« on: December 08, 2012, 07:57:21 PM »

Wanting to improve the headlight on my Breakout I bought a Day-Maker bulb.
After I installed the bulb and went for a test ride I noticed the red light in my speedo was staying on.
This is an indication that there is a problem with one of the systems.
Sure enough, I check and there was a code present. This system monitors many things including the light bulbs.
I reset the code and restated the bike, code re-appears.

I took the bike to the dealer this morning for them to check it out.  Verdict is, the system must see a minimum of 3.75 amps or it thinks the light is out/faulty. Evidently these L E D light do not draw much amperage.

Dealer is going to call H D Monday morning to see what the fix is. Maybe there is a way to adjust the ECM.

Funny that they chose 3.75 amps as the trigger point to turn on the indicator lamp.  If the headlight bulb was actually burned out, I'd expect the current draw to be pretty close to zero. :confused5:

Anyhow, the situation is somewhat similar to what happened in the past when people substituted LED turnsignals for the old incandescent bulbs.  Those modifications required adding a simple inline load equalizer to increase the current draw seen by the turn signal module so it would work properly.  Harley incorporated changes in the HDLAN bikes (Softails) back in 2011 to eliminate the need for load equalizers for the turn signals; funny they wouldn't have thought about that for the headlights.  Or maybe they did but the dealer has to enable it in the software?  Hopefully Harley will have an answer for your dealer Monday.

Headlight will be in a different circuit to the indicators so a load resistor will be needed. Easy mod with HD part.

Looking a doing the same but use Speaker LED headlight. Same as the day maker only cheaper seeing it doesn't have the bar & shield logo.

And where can you buy the Speaker headlight directly?

I didn't talk to the dealer today.
I figured I'd give them until tomorrow, then call them if I haven't heard anything.

I'll let you guys know when I find out what the fix is.

Here in Oz you can get them through Truckline. So I would say a major Truck spares shop over there.

Do a web search for JW Speaker, that's the actual name of the company.  And I have heard they are the company that actually sells the Day Maker lights to Harley, but the Harley version may not be the exact same product as what Speaker sells to others.

OK, here is the what I got from my guy at the dealer after he talked to HD.

They told him that this occurred with some bikes/bulbs but not all and that there is not a fix right now.
Said the LED light does not draw enough amps.
Not sure if this is B/S or not.

Now to get a refund on the very expensive bulb.
I do not think I will have a problem, this dealership has always been fair to me.

Ron,

Your dealers is correct in the fact the LED light draws a very small amount of amps - actually milli amps compared to the halogen light. But you can still keep that very expensive light just add a load resistor/equaliser to it. Off the top of my head I'm sure HD has them, if not look at the Kuryakyn site as they use them with there LED lights.
