Oil Cooler or Not?
« on: January 07, 2014, 04:25:49 PM »

Ok gentlemen and after reading and gathering information on the site, I have decided to run an oil cooler on my bike. Please give feedback on your thoughts. And what oil brands are you guys using? There are several things I took in consideration for hot running engines and or prevention.

1. Oil Temperatures, oil cooler not necessary but help keep temps down.
2. Good flow, air in and out, stage 1.
3. Good tune, AFR and timing.
4. Run good fuel, higher octane.
5. Good oil such as Amsoil and or equivalent.

So what you guy's think?

I added the HD premium oil cooler to my bike, though I believe 3rd party options might be better. My bike runs noticeably cooler even on hottest days of summer. Even beyond the engine considerations, I am more comfortable and don't feel like I'm riding on a pizza oven. I also have the cooling fans, which I have turned off since October as I just don't see the need for it.

There are a lot of folks who think oil coolers (or cooling fans) are not necessary. But, being an old Porsche air-cooled engine fan and considering Porsche the leading authority when it comes to air cooling, I followed their lead and added the oil cooler and the fans regardless.

If I were riding my BO around KAF I would have an oil cooler but here in Tennessee I wouldn't have an oil cooler installed.  :drink:

I was going to go the oil cooler route but I am going to first try the JIMS cooling fan:

http://www.jpcycles.com/harley-parts/jims/engine-cooling-fans

Mine only overheats when I am stopped, stuck in traffic. Since I am stopped, the oil is not circulating anyhow. Sure the increased oil capacity from the cooler will still yield cooler temps, but over all the fan will give me a lower oil temperature while stuck in traffic. I have been looking at a bunch of the fan vendors but the JIMS looks the best to me since it is made to work with their 120 and up engines, I am quite certain, my 110 will benefit nicely.

Interesting...  Problem is indeed when I get stuck in traffic jams.  No trouble when riding...

I looked at the JIMS fan and I like it. Please keep me posted on how it works for ya. Because it probably would be something worth trying. In El Paso the temps sometime reach 115 degrees. I don't want to take a chance, heat our worse enemy.

This may be another fan option, I like the look and should bolt right on the CVO breakout without moving the horn.
